DJs Jimmy Buffkin, Tim Holland and Gene Sistare all kept the dance floor full. Summertime weather seems to be here already. I am enjoying my daily swimming and am over 30 miles so far. Our first June dance is right around the corner. A Luau theme is always a good time. Put together a Hawaii dish to bring and pull out the Aloha shirts and other pieces of Aloha attire. We will be celebrating the season at the Moose. We continue to need volunteers to sign up to be Door Greeters and do the 50/50 at our upcoming dances. Both of these offer opportunities to get to know other club members. It is so good to see so many club members out and about on the dance floors. I really enjoyed seeing the recent dance turnouts and have been so pleased with the direction of the club so far this year. On Saturday, May 27 th, Katy & I, with Ben & Troye Hinson and Floyd & Mary Lou McLeroy did a dance demonstration and lesson for the Preserve Home Owners Association. What a great time we had. It was themed around a Low Country Shrimp & Crab Boil. The food was excellent and the people were very friendly and enthusiastic. Preserve residents and SOBS club members, Don & Jean Fowler were there. I met Don s brother who in years past had allowed Don to drive his 65 GTO convertible as part of our club SOS parade entry. That is a good brother. Beach Day will be coming soon on Saturday, July 1 st. Midnight Allie Band will be performing and DJ Jim Bruno will play between sets and provide the music for the Shag Contest. First prize will be $300. It should be a great evening here on Oak Island as part of the NC 4 th of July Festival. The club will be selling sodas and bottled water and cooking hot hogs and hamburgers to sell to the public. This will be the first time in a several years that we have done this. It should be an excellent fundraiser for our club. I have had 20+ club members let me know that they want to help out in an effort to make this day a success. If you are interested in helping out, please contact me. It should be a great day so come and enjoy the festivities. By the time that you get this we will be getting ready for our 2nd Thursday night class of the free Shag lessons that are being given until June 29 th at the Lazy Turtle Bar and Grill. The Beginner lessons starts at 6 PM and the Intermediate level dance lesson will begin at 7 PM. June 2017 The Beach B ea t! P age 2 Executive Committee Meeting Minutes, May 11, 2017... PRESENT: John Hutton, Chuck Boney, Steve Smith, Cathy Myers, Joe Malinowski The meeting was called to order at 6:05 PM by John Hutton. SECRETARY S REPORT: The April minutes were approved. TREASURER S REPORT: We collected $339.00 for S.O.A.R. at the last meeting. It will be rounded up to $350.00 by the club. A check will be presented to S.O.A.R. Board Member, Steve Salerno at the May 12 th dance at the VFW. OLD BUSINESS: The April 14 th dance at the VFW with DJ Lynn King was a success, with solid attendance. The SOS Parade was a success, especially since we won our category! This month in addition to us presenting a check to others, we had a check (and trophy) presented to us! 1 st prize was $250. As icing on the cake, we beat out the OD Shag Club which had taken first prize for 14 years! The tailgate pre-party was a hit, with many delicious foods to sample. Plus, those who attended the free-pour had a great time. The only wrinkle in the day was that the OD Pavilion bartenders reported that they were not tipped appropriately. Next year we will pass the hat at the tailgate party. John attended the first meeting for the State of North Carolina Beach Day at Oak Island coming up July 1. Midnight Allie will be the entertainment. Jim Bruno will be the DJ for the Dance Contest, which our club is managing. We also have the go ahead to sell hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and soda/water if we decide to do it. John will ask for volunteers at the next meeting. If we have enough volunteers, we can proceed with plans to sell food. If you attended last year, you might remember that there wasn t much available to eat beside snacks. It could be a good moneymaking project for the club. John attended the ACSC Spring SOS Meeting in North Myrtle Beach on April 29 th. Cathy and Francis Myers will attend the ACSC Summer Workshop hosted by the Lake Norman Shag Club. The final dance of our Sunday Series will be at The Lazy Turtle Bar & Grill on May 21 st from 1-5 PM with DJ Tim Holland. The dance is free, but we will pass the hat for DJ expenses. MEMBERSHIP: Joe reported that we have a total of 218 members, which includes 69 new members. Our website is up to date. Information regarding Operation Uplink will be on the website and sent out to members in the coming weeks. NEW BUSINESS: Operation Uplink tickets have been ordered and sent to members using the same procedure as last year. Time to begin collection of donations. John has approached Sam West with a request for the Jr. Shaggers to perform at our Dance on September 22 nd during Fall Migration. Sale of SOS Fall Migration Fun Monday tickets will begin at the May 26 th Moose Dance. Cathy started a discussion about recognizing Katy O Neill for her contributions to the success of the parade as well as the many other ways she contributes to the success of the club. She will be given a gift certificate at the VFW Dance. Reminder: John, Katy, Chuck and Sandy will be teaching complimentary dance lessons (beginning and intermediate) at the Lazy Turtle on Oak Island each Thursday in June, starting on June 1 st. The History of Flag Day (from USFLAG.ORG) The 4th of July was traditionally celebrated as America's birthday, but the idea of an annual day specifically celebrating the Flag is believed to have first originated in 1885. BJ Cigrand, a schoolteacher, arranged for the pupils in the Fredonia, Wisconsin Public School, District 6, to observe June 14 (the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes) as 'Flag Birthday'. In numerous magazines and newspaper articles and public addresses over the following years, Cigrand continued to enthusiastically advocate the observance of June 14 as 'Flag Birthday', or 'Flag Day'. On June 14, 1889, George Balch, a kindergarten teacher in New York City, planned appropriate ceremonies for the children of his school, and his idea of observing Flag Day was later adopted by the State Board of Education of New York. On June 14, 1891, the Betsy Ross House in Philadelphia held a Flag Day celebration, and on June 14 of the following year, the New York Society of the Sons of the Revolution, celebrated Flag Day. Following the suggestion of Colonel J Granville Leach (at the time historian of the Pennsylvania Society of the Sons of the Revolution), the Pennsylvania Society of Colonial Dames of America on April 25, 1893 adopted a resolution requesting the mayor of Philadelphia and all others in authority and all private citizens to display the Flag on June 14th. Leach went on to recommend that thereafter the day be known as 'Flag Day', and on that day, school children be assembled for appropriate exercises, with each child being given a small Flag. Two weeks later on May 8th, the Board of Managers of the Pennsylvania Society of Sons of the Revolution unanimously endorsed the action of the Pennsylvania Society of Colonial Dames. As a result of the resolution, Dr. Edward Brooks, then Superintendent of Public Schools of Philadelphia, directed that Flag Day exercises be held on June 14, 1893 in Independence Square. School children were assembled, each carrying a small Flag, and patriotic songs were sung and addresses delivered. In 1894, the governor of New York directed that on June 14 the Flag be displayed on all public buildings. With BJ Cigrand and Leroy Van Horn as the moving spirits, the Illinois organization, known as the American Flag Day Association, was organized for the purpose of promoting the holding of Flag Day exercises. On June 14th, 1894, under the auspices of this association, the first general public school children's celebration of Flag Day in Chicago was held in Douglas, Garfield, Humboldt, Lincoln, and Washington Parks, with more than 300,000 children participating. Adults, too, participated in patriotic programs. Franklin K. Lane, Secretary of the Interior, delivered a 1914 Flag Day address in which he repeated words he said the flag had spoken to him that morning: "I am what you make me; nothing more. I swing before your eyes as a bright gleam of color, a symbol of yourself." Inspired by 3 decades of state and local celebrations, Flag Day - the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777 - was officially established by the Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson on May 30th, 1916. While Flag Day was celebrated in various communities for years after Wilson's proclamation, it was not until August 3rd, 1949, that President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.

P age 4 Mother s Day & Father s Day Origins (from History.com) The Mother s Day we celebrate today has its origins in the peace-andreconciliation campaigns of the post-civil War era. During the 1860s, at the urging of activist Ann Reeves Jarvis, one divided West Virginia town celebrated Mother s Work Days that brought together the mothers of Confederate and Union soldiers. However, Mother s Day did not become a commercial holiday until 1908, when inspired by Jarvis s daughter, Anna Jarvis, who wanted to honor her own mother by making Mother s Day a national holiday the John Wanamaker department store in Philadelphia sponsored a service dedicated to mothers in its auditorium. Thanks in large part to this association with retailers, who saw great potential for profit in the holiday, Mother s Day caught on right away. In 1909, 45 states observed the day, and in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson approved a resolution that made the second Sunday in May a holiday in honor of that tender, gentle army, the mothers of America. The campaign to celebrate the nation s fathers did not meet with the same enthusiasm perhaps because, as one florist explained, fathers haven t the same sentimental appeal that mothers have. On July 5, 1908, a West Virginia church sponsored the nation s first event explicitly in honor of fathers, a Sunday sermon in memory of the 362 men who had died in the previous December s explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah, but it was a one-time commemoration and not an annual holiday. The next year, a Spokane, Washington, woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, one of six children raised by a widower, tried to establish an official equivalent to Mother s Day for male parents. She went to local churches, the YMCA, shopkeepers and government officials to drum up support for her idea, and she was successful: Washington State celebrated the nation s first statewide Father s Day on June 19, 1910. Slowly, the holiday spread. In 1916, President Wilson honored the day by using telegraph signals to unfurl a flag in Spokane when he pressed a button in Washington, D.C. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge urged state governments to observe Father s Day. Today, the day honoring fathers is celebrated in the United States on the third Sunday of June. Many men, however, continued to disdain the day. As one historian writes, they scoffed at the holiday s sentimental attempts to domesticate manliness with flowers and gift-giving, or they derided the proliferation of such holidays as a commercial gimmick to sell more products often paid for by the father himself. During the 1920s and 1930s, a movement arose to scrap Mother s Day and Father s Day altogether in favor of a single holiday, Parents Day. Every year on Mother s Day, pro-parents Day groups rallied in New York City s Central Park a public reminder, said Parents Day activist and radio performer Robert Spere, that both parents should be loved and respected together. Paradoxically, however, the Great Depression derailed this effort to combine and de-commercialize the holidays. Struggling retailers and advertisers redoubled their efforts to make Father s Day a second Christmas for men, promoting goods such as neckties, hats, socks, pipes and tobacco, golf clubs and other sporting goods, and greeting cards. When World War II began, advertisers began to argue that celebrating Father s Day was a way to honor American troops and support the war effort. By the end of the war, Father s Day may not have been a federal holiday, but it was a national institution. In 1972, in the middle of a hard-fought presidential re-election campaign, Richard Nixon signed a proclamation making Father s Day a federal holiday at last. Today, economists estimate that Americans spend more than $1 billion each year on Father s Day gifts.

DJs Jimmy Buffkin, Tim Holland, and Gene Sistare certainly kept the dance floor full at our May dances. Summer is here and the beach is nice again. Spinning the discs for our first summer dances are: Friday, June 9 th - DJ Butch Adeimy @ OKI VFW Friday, June 23 rd - DJ Claude Collins @ OKI Moose Lodge Butch is playing for our Luau on June 9 th. He is a Carolina man, retired from the NC Community College System and is from Hamlet, NC. He has been a DJ since the early 90 s. He is happily married with 2 children and 5 grandchildren. Butch has played all the Beach clubs in the Ocean Drive area as well as other venues in both North and South Carolina and Virginia. Butch was the regular DJ at an old time beach club, The Coachman and Four, for a number of years. Claude Collins will be playing for our Friday, June 23 rd dance at the Moose Lodge. Claude has been a Beach Music DJ for a years and has played for our club many times. Claude was born and raised in North Carolina and currently lives in the North Myrtle Beach, SC area. He is one of the House DJ s at the Ocean Drive Pavilion, where we hold our twice yearly SOS Free Pours, and can be found there playing great dance music during SOS. At our Friday, May 12, dance at the Oak Island VFW, we presented to S.O.A.R. at check for $350 to help defray the costs of the services provided to our animal friends. The donation was a result of our S.O.A.R. fundraiser that was held at our April 14 dance also at the Oak Island VFW. A donation jar and the club's half of the 50/50 raffle was presented in the form of a check to Steve Salerno, Member of S.O.A.R. Board of Directors.
