The Spartans earned the No. 7 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and will square off with No. 2 seeded Maryland Sunday at 1 p.m. in College Park, Maryland. The game will be broadcast on BTN Plus. Tournament History Michigan State holds a 17-19 record all-time in the Big Ten Tournament, including a 9-13 mark in first round games, 4-6 in the second round, and a perfect 4-0 when it reaches the final. The Spartans four tournament titles came in 2002, 2003, 2009 and 2013. Series Notes This will be just the second time that the Spartans and Terrapins meet in the Big Ten Tournament. The first and only meeting in postseason play came in 2015 in the first round where Maryland defeated MSU by a final of 3-2. Sunday s meeting marks the eighth time the two programs have met in each school s history. The Terps stand undefeated in the series, holding an 8-0-0 advantage over the Spartans. Meetings with Maryland The Spartans will see Maryland for the second time this season on Sunday. MSU hosted Maryland in a Big Ten match on Oct. 6. The Terps earned a 4-1 victory over MSU in that meeting. Senior forward Sophie Macadré tallied the lone goal in that game, while goalkeepers senior Katie Miller and freshman Mairi Fletcher combined for nine saves on the day. MSU Notes Head coach Helen Knull is in her seventh season at the helm of the Spartan field hockey program. All of MSU s losses this season have come at the hands of nationally ranked opponents, the highest being Penn State at No. 4. The Spartans have competed in three overtime games this year, two of which have gone into double overtime and one of which took a shootout to decide a winner. MSU is undefeated in overtime games, posting an impressive 3-0 record. Through 18 games, the Green and White is averaging 1.89 goals per game while allowing 3.11. The Spartans claim a shots on goal percentage of.552. The Spartans are fifth in the Big Ten in total shots with 279. The Spartans rank at an impressive 19th in the nation in saves per game with 6.83. The Green and White is averaging 15.5 shots per game and has tallied 28 total assists. Redshirt senior midfielder Kendal Anderson is ninth in the Big Ten and leads the Spartans in goals with nine. The Shaker Height, Ohio native adds two assists, garnering a team-leading 20 points on the year. Anderson has been on a streak as of late, tallying three goals in the last two games, recording at least one point in 10 games this season. Macadré sits at second on the team in total points with 19, combining for six goals (second on the team) and a teamleading seven assists. Redshirt senior back Simone Vagnoni was on a three-game scoring streak leading up to last weekend s matches. The Collegeville, Pennsylvania native is tied for second on the team in total goals with six. Vagnoni adds two assists, registering 14 points (third on the team). The captain was named as an alternate for the Victory Sports Tours/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I Senior Game on Nov. 17 in Louisville. Sophomore midfielder Mackenzie Brown has three goals and is the only Spartan to score twice in one game this season. The Scotland native tallied two goals in a span of less than 20 seconds in the match against Yale on Sept. 17. Junior back Bailey Higgins has been an integral part of the Spartan backline, starting in every game this season. Higgins is second on the team in assists with five. Senior forward Grace Santi has recorded three goals, tied for third on the team. Freshman forward Lia Sinisi is the only freshman to start in all 18 games for the Green and White. Redshirt senior back Lauren Bonness, sophomore forward Kelsey Keener, freshman forward Meredith Ross, and sophomore back Hannah Ackers have each recorded one goal for the Green and White. Senior Katie Miller and freshman Mairi Fletcher have both seen time in net for the Spartans, combining for a save percentage of.694. Miller leads the team with 66 total saves and claims a save percentage of.680, eighth-best in the Big Ten. The senior captain has recorded over 850 minutes in net, ranks eighth in the

Big Ten in saves and ninth in saves per game with 3.70. Miller ranks 30th in the nation in goalie win-loss percentage at.556. Fletcher ranks fifth in the conference in saves per game with 4.70. The freshman has a save percentage of.683 (ninth in the Big Ten). MSU has gotten production from up and down the lineup, as 14 different Spartans have registered a point, while 10 different players have tallied goals. The Spartans faced a challenging slate in 2017, taking on 10 ranked opponents as part of their 18-game schedule. MSU lost four decisions by one goal this season, all coming from ranked teams. Scouting Report Maryland Maryland s field hockey program is led by 30th year head coach Missy Meharg. The Terrapins finished the regular season 12-5-0 overall and 6-2-0 in the Big Ten, good for the No. 2 seed in the tournament. Maryland closed out the regular season on a six-game winning streak. Junior goalkeeper Sarah Holliday is the likely keeper in net for the Terrapins. Holliday s 81 saves ranks fourth in the Big Ten while her save percentage of.771 ranks third. Quotable Time for the post season! The Spartans are excited to head to Maryland on Sunday for our first game in Big Ten Tournament play, said head caoch Helen Knull. Maryland is a great team, but we are ready to execute and make a run in the Big Ten Tournament. Our goal is to be home and playing on Ralph Young Field the weekend of Nov 3-5th. It is about us playing Spartan Hockey for 70 minutes and leaving everything we have on the field. Up Next The winner of Sunday s game will advance to the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 3, to take on either No. 3 Penn State or No. 6 Iowa in a 1:30 p.m. match. The Helen Knull File Helen Knull concluded her sixth season as head coach of the Michigan State field hockey program in 2016. She was hired as head coach on Dec. 27, 2010 after serving as an assistant and associate head coach for five years. Her overall record on staff for the Spartans is 128-102 and she holds a 54-68 record as head coach. Helen is an enthusiastic and energetic individual, and we are thrilled that we could elevate her into the position of head coach, said MSU athletic director Mark Hollis of the hire. Helen has helped build and maintain what has become a winning tradition at Michigan State in our field hockey program. The program has seen unparalleled success over the last decade, and we are confident that making Helen Knull our head coach will continue that success into the future. The 2016 season saw the Spartans go 8-12 overall and 3-5 in the Big Ten. MSU faced a slew of tough opponents, facing nine ranked opponents in the 18-game schedule. Kendal Anderson and Simone Vagnoni had successful junior seasons, as both were named Second Team All-Big Ten and NFHCA All-West Second Team. 14 members of the 2016 squad were Academic All-Big Ten selections. MSU had its best season under Knull in 2013. Overcoming a slow start, the team finished 14-10, highlighted by a Big Ten Tournament Championship and Elite 8 appearance. The Spartans won seven of their final nine games, including NCAA Tournament victories over Miami (Ohio) and regional host and second-seeded Syracuse, snapping the Orange s 45-game win streak at home. Knull was named the NFHCA West Region Coach of the Year, becoming the third coach in program history to earn the honor. Three players were named to the NFHCA West All-Region Team and five players were named to All-Big Ten teams. Abby Barker was a Third Team All-American and First Team All-Big Ten selection. In addition to the on field success by the program in 2013, the Spartans excelled in the classroom as well. MSU was the recipient of the 2013 Gladiator by SGI / NFHCA Division I National Academic Team Award on top of having 13 student-athletes named to the 2013 Gladiator by SGI / NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad, recognizing them for their individual effort in the classroom. Nine of Knull s players were also named to the Academic All-Big Ten Team. Kristen Henn became the third field hockey player in program history to be named the Big Ten s Medal of Honor winner, the conference s most exclusive award to recognize academic and athletic excellence. The 2012 season was highlighted by many achievements both on and off the field, as the Spartans went 10-10 in Knull s second season as head coach. Abby Barker was named to the First Team All-Big Ten, while Kristen Henn and Becky Stiles were Second Team selections. Barker and Stiles were also named as 2012 Longstreth /National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I First Team All-West Region selections. Barker was then recognized nationally as a 2012 Longstreth /National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I Second-Team All-American. Two of Knull s players were also selected to play at the USA Field Hockey 2013 Women s National Championship. During Knull s first season as head coach in 2011, the team tallied a season record of 7-13-0. Off the field, Corey Block was presented the President s Award at the Spartan Academic Excellence Gala. The award is given to the male and female graduating senior with the highest cumulative GPA. The team was recognized with the 2012 SGI/NFHCA Division I National Academic Team Award. The NFHCA also recognized nine athletes from the field hockey team to its National Academic Squad and senior Corey Block as a Scholar of Distinction. 13 members of the team were Academic All-Big Ten selections for the fall of 2012. On the field, three Spartans earned NFHCA All-Region honors, while two of them also picked up second team All-Big Ten accolades under Knull s first year as head coach. In the classroom, MSU earned the NFHCA Collegiate National Academic Team Award, while 11 Spartans received NFHCA Academic honors, 10 were Academic All-Big Ten and three were Big Ten Distinguished Scholars. Prior to being named head coach, Knull served as an assistant coach on the Rolf van de Kerkhof s Spartan staff from 2006-10, and was elevated to the title of Associate Head Coach in the spring of 2010. In the seasons in East Lansing before being named head coach, she helped the Spartans compile a 74-34 overall record, including an 33-10 mark in the last two seasons combined. In 2009, the Spartans won the Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles, becoming only the second school in Big Ten history to finish the regular season and tournament play unbeaten. The Green and White also advanced to the NCAA Tournament four straight times (2007-10). Knull arrived in East Lansing in 2006 from Kent State, where she served as an assistant coach for two years and as an associate head coach during her last season at her alma mater (2005).
