Running Safe By: Grace Gowans Safety First. That famous phrase that 99.99% of the population doesn't even know the origin of. But that phrase has been used in everything. Horseback riding, car racing, swimming, even some card games, and running as well. So that's what we're going to discuss today. Safety first with running. First things first: get the OK. Talk to your doctor about starting to run. He or she can tell you if that knee issue you've had for the last couple years could turn into something much worse. Your doctor's there. Use him. Secondly, dress the part. Now that doesn't mean "go to Macy's and get the cutest attire." It means get the right shoes for what you'll be doing and get the right equipment, which in sure I don't need to tell you guys twice about that. Then... just start slow. Just run 5k's at first, maybe not even that, until you can do it without breaking a sweat. Then move on. From 3 miles do 4, then 5, then 7, then so on and so forth. Don't go out on your first day and aim for 6 miles. It's okay to have small goals. If you start with a high number of miles that your not used to, it could injure your joints and hurt your body. It's also important to fuel up correctly. That means eating correctly before a race or just a run. A chocolate muffin isn't going to cut it. Try eating something healthier or some supplements to help you. It is also important to warm up and cool down. That will help your body get back to a normal state. I hope that this helped you beginning runners and informed some of the more experienced ones. Be safe and happy running Resubmitted from August Issue with Correction. Sorry for any inconvenience. 6 Zoomersrun.com

Joseph Smith By Grace Gowans On a sunny morning in August, at a 5k to benefit the Boys and Girls Cross-country team at Port Charlotte High School, called the Pirate Treasure Trot, Joseph was among the first to cross the finish line. The course was flat and winding, with both the start and the finish being paved but included some grass fields, paved sidewalks, parking lots and assorted driveways on and surrounding the well-known high school. And through all of that, he crossed with a time of 20 minutes and 7 seconds, and was the first one to cross in his 10-14 age group. And he himself hit the peak of that. At the age of 14, he d already made a name for himself in the Zoomers club, which this is his first year in the club. But it seems already quite a few people seem to know him. Originally from Uganda, he moved to the United States two years ago. He has been running for a while, and he enjoys doing it, too. Probably because he can compete with his four siblings fairly, but again, when I saw his time, I don t know if I d call it fair! Nevertheless, his time of a little over 20 minutes if one to be proud of, and he is. I asked him if he had any running goals, but he said no. I suppose just be able to compete in the sport is enough enjoyment for him. Joseph generally runs every other day during the week and enjoys eating oatmeal before he does his races. If you see him at a race, be sure to say hello, he is certainly a person worth getting to know. 8 Zoomersrun.com

TRANS ROCKIES RUN - 6 Days/ 120 Miles/ 20,000 Feet of Gain During the six days of the TransRockies Run, runners from all over the world would run, eat and live together as they cover 120 miles of spectacular scenery, fully supported by a dedicated and professional Event Team who will look after all aspects of their food, accommodations and on-course support. Our very own Zoomers, Jessica Oldfather and Sally Libonati braved these conditions and set out on an amazing adventure. Anxiously awaiting updates and photos were the Zoomers via our Facebook page. It takes a special kind of person to partake on such an adventure and the Zoomers members joined in on the trip from afar. Thoughts and wishes were shared with Sally and Jessica during the journey. The TransRockies Run is run on a multi-day point-to-point format which allows athletes to access and traverse wild and fantastic scenery, while building camaraderie, overcoming adversity and sharing a singular adventure. Each morning, the racers will leave the race village en masse and tackle the day s course before arriving at the finish where the Event Team has moved in and rebuilt the village from the night before. With gear bags, tents, showers and food waiting, the racers can spend the rest of the afternoon and evening trading stories, healing wounds and recovering in preparation for the next day s run The TransRockies Run course runs from Buena Vista to Beaver Creek, through the heart of the White River and San Isabel National Forests. The course includes a mix of single-track and forest road with nearly 20,000 feet of elevation gain, reaching altitudes of over 12,500 ft. Congratulations to these two amazing athletes!! We can t wait to see what you tackle next and thanks for letting all of us tag along. 9 Zoomersrun.com

They might not have your best interests in mind. Your desire to do the right thing is a great attribute, but if you are not careful you could be derailed from your best race. Your desire to love and be loved might be fulfilled by organizing a giant group hug at the finish line. 18 Zoomersrun.com September Birthdays!! 9/2 Steve Costa 9/2 David Herzog 9/3 Stephen DeSilva 9/3 Kathy Herzog 9/3 Carol Simonds 9/4 Brayden Smith 9/5 Kathy Van Note 9/5 Carol Fabian 9/5 Tammy Hill-Golden 9/6 Emily Peralta 9/7 Penny Luana 9/7 John Libonati 9/8 Debbie Vieira 9/9 Sandra Newell 9/9 Melody Vasbinder 9/11 Sydney Stevenson 9/13 Luka Clarke 9/14 Valerie Rowe 9/16 Mike Kai 9/18 Ariane Rouillard 9/18 (F) (YL) Tori Belcher 9/18 (M) (YM) Tristan Belcher 9/19 Megan Guarente 9/20 Cain Robert 9/20 Kendra Howard 9/21 Roland Frank 9/21 Kheyanne Williams 9/22 Connie Collins 9/22 Melody Burt 9/23 Ed Morgan 9/23 Justeen Perez 9/23 Heidi Federici 9/25 Samantha Wilmer 9/26 Billy Squires 9/26 Elizabeth Marsicovetere 9/26 Kate Keys 9/27 John Briggs 9/27 Mike Barnes 9/27 Deb Dyer 9/28 Brian Ward 9/29 Nicole Natal 9/29 Katie Kai 9/29 Paul DaCosta 9/30 Brendan Flavin 9/30 James Raber 9/30 Joanne Stratos T H E F I N I S H L I N E Libra: September 23 October 22 Element: Air Symbol: The Scales Life Pursuit: To be consistent Secret Desire: To live an easy and uncomplicated life Unfortunately, your desire to be consistent and to live an easy life makes you vulnerable to running consistently slow splits.
