The Anne and Tony Joseph Director of Men s Basketball Johnny Dawkins Overall Record: 68-58 (4th yr.) At Stanford: 68-58 (4th yr.) In just his first three seasons as a head coach at any level, Johnny Dawkins continues to make an impact on one of college basketball s most accomplished programs. Dawkins contributions since arriving on The Farm have come in the form of both team and individual successes. One year after leading Stanford to a 20-win season for the 20th time in school history, Dawkins oversaw Landry Fields progression from key reserve to all-league performer and eventual NBA Draft pick. Dawkins has also made noticeable strides off the court, as evidenced by the addition of a top-20 recruiting class two years ago and last season s signing of Gatorade Illinois Player of the Year Chasson Randle. The Cardinal wrapped up the 2010-11 season at 15-16. Fielding a team without a senior for the first time in school history, Dawkins put his rookies in a position to excel, with Anthony Brown and Dwight Powell earning Pac-10 All-Freshman Team honors. In fact, Stanford was represented with four all-league picks. Stanford finished 14-18 during the 2009-10 campaign in Dawkins second season at the helm. Working with a roster that featured only seven true scholarship players, two returning starters and six walk-ons, the Cardinal reached the Pac-10 Tournament semifinals. Under Dawkins guidance, Fields produced one of the most memorable seasons in school history, earning All-Pac-10 First Team honors after leading the conference in scoring, minutes played, 20-point games and double-doubles while finishing second in rebounding. He was chosen in the second round of the 2010 NBA Draft, as the 39th overall pick by the New York Knicks to become Stanford s 31st NBA/ABA Draft choice and first since Brook Lopez and Robin Lopez in 2008. During his rookie season in 2008-09, Dawkins directed Stanford to a 20-14 record and reached the CBI semifinals, extending the program s lengthy streaks of consecutive winning seasons (16) and postseason appearances (16). In addition to surpassing Robert Burnett as the winningest first-year head coach in school history, Dawkins ranked third in victories among the 21 first-year head coaches in Division I with no prior college head coaching experience. Dawkins, 48, became Stanford s 17th head coach on Apr. 28, 2009, after completing 11 years as a member of the Duke coaching staff. For the previous nine seasons (2000-08), Dawkins served as Duke s associate head coach and began his coaching career as an assistant in 1998-99. During Dawkins 11 years as a coach at Duke, the Blue Devils won a national championship in 2001, six ACC regular season championships and seven ACC Tournament titles. Dawkins finished his career in 1986 as the school s all-time leading scorer. Dawkins was a two-time first team All-ACC performer in 1985 and 1986 as well as the school s first consensus two-time, first team All-American. During his senior year, he was tabbed ACC Tournament MVP while also becoming the first Naismith Player of the Year recipient in school history. Scouting (23-7, 13-4 Pac-12) enters the week with the most victories of any Pac-12 team. The Golden Bears also boast a league-best RPI of No. 36. has yet to lose back-to-back games this year. The Golden Bears earned a split of their road trip last weekend, defeating Utah 60-46 before falling 70-57 to Colorado three days later. The loss to the Buffaloes snapped a six-game winning streak. The Golden Bears were picked to finish second in this year s Pac-12 preseason media poll, receiving 13 first-place votes. UCLA earned 14 first-place votes as the favorite. The Golden Bears are 6-6 away from Haas Pavilion (5-5 road, 1-1 neutral). is averaging 72.0 points per game while allowing only 60.8. The Golden Bears lead the conference in free throw percentage (75.1) and field goal percentage (48.1). Keep an eye on: Allen Crabbe (15.2 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 84.2 percent free throws, team-best 73 three-pointers), Jorge Gutierrez (13.0 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 119 assists, 35 steals) and Harper Kamp (11.1 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 55.5 percent FG). Stanford All-Time vs. In a series that dates back to the 1913-14 campaign, owns a 142-113 edge. The Golden Bears have won five of the last six matchups overall, with Stanford s only victory coming in the form of an 82-68 win last January in the Pac-10 opener for both teams. Stanford has won three of the last four meetings at Maples Pavilion, with s only win during that stretch coming two years ago (71-61). Who To Watch Against Dwight Powell has enjoyed success in three career matchups, averaging 11.6 points and 6.0 rebounds while shooting 14-28 from the field. That includes a career-high 20 points (7-11 FG, 6-7 FT) in his debut against the Golden Bears last year. Jack Trotter has averaged 5.2 points over five games while making 12-21 (57.1 percent) from the field. Meanwhile, Josh Owens has yet to make his presence felt against Cal, scoring only 24 points on 10-24 shooting with 20 rebounds overall in six career meetings. Senior Tribute Stanford s four-member senior class of Jarrett Mann, Josh Owens, Jack Trotter and Andrew Zimmermann will be honored in a ceremony prior to Sunday s game. The Cardinal owns a 6-4 mark over its last 10 Senior Day contests, with its most recent win coming in the form of a 75-63 triumph over USC three years ago. Last year s Stanford team was the first in school history without a senior on its roster. Pac-12 Standings Update The top four teams earn first-round byes in next week s Pac-12 Tournament, scheduled for March 7-10 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Platz also serves as the sideline reporter for football broadcasts. A three-year lettewinner at Stanford from 2008-10, Drew Shiller is back for his second season as the team s color analyst. One More Victory Means... A 20-win season, the 21st in program history Stanford is searching for its first 20-win season since a 20-14 finish in 2008-09 during head coach Johnny Dawkins first season. Only three other coaches in school history (John W. Bunn, Everett S. Dean, Mike Montgomery) have directed Stanford to multiple 20-win seasons. A winning record in Pac-12 play With 10 Pac-12 wins, Stanford secures its first winning conference record since 2008 (13-5). A 14th victory at Maples Pavilion Stanford is 13-3 at home this season, reaching the 10-win mark at Maples Pavilion for the 19th straight year. The Cardinal is 64-19 at home since the start of the 2007-08 campaign. Stanford inches closer to 1,400 wins in program history Stanford s next victory will be No. 1,397 in the 97-year history of the program. Takeaways From The Utah Game Chris Hines scored 19 points, including the game-winning 3-pointer with 27 seconds left, as Utah edged Stanford 58-57 to halt an eight-game losing streak. Chasson Randle led Stanford with 19 points, including five three-pointers. He was 7-16 from the field, played all but three minutes of the game but missed a potential game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer. Stanford shot 36.8 percent overall, connecting on 28.6 percent over the second half after making 44.8 percent in the first 20 minutes. Stanford was also 6-21 from beyond the arc. For the first time this year, Stanford lost a game when Anthony Brown scored in double digits. The Cardinal is now 8-1 in such games, after he poured in 11 points in loss to Utah on Feb. 25. For the fifth time this season, the Cardinal was held to under 60 points. Utah was 17-21 from the free throw line, while Stanford finished 9-14. Utah attempted only 38 shots, matching the lowest total this year for a Stanford opponent. Arizona State finished 13-38 from the field back on Feb. 2, as Stanford cruised to a 68-44 rout. Injury Report Andrew Zimmermann did not play against Utah on Feb. 25 due to a sprained hip. However, he has practiced this week and is expected to be available for Sunday s game against. Owens Closing In On Milestone... Josh Owens now stands 28 points away from 1,000 for his career. Should Owens reach the mark, he will become the 40th player in school history to reach the prestigious scoring mark. Even more impressive, Owens would become the 21st player in school history to end his career with 1,000 points and 500 rebounds. Meanwhile, Owens currently boasts a career field goal percentage of 58.1, ranking fifth-best in school history....and Performing At A High Level Josh Owens is also enjoying the best season of his career, ranking second on the club in scoring (12.4 ppg) and first in rebounding (6.0 rpg) while starting all 29 games. An active player on both ends of the floor, Owens is also tied for the team lead with 30 steals. In addition to scoring in double figures 21 times, Owens has led Stanford in scoring on 12 occasions. Perhaps most impressive, Owens 59.4 percent field goal percentage (148-249) ranks ninth in the nation. Randle Making An Impact In Rookie Season Chasson Randle is bidding to become the first freshman to lead Stanford in minutes played since Casey Jacobsen s 28.5 average during the 1999-2000 campaign. Randle is averaging a team-best 30.0 minutes played, slightly ahead of Aaron Bright s 29.2 clip. The last freshman to average at least 30.0 minutes played in a season was Brevin Knight at 32.7 in 1993-94. Meanwhile, Randle continues to lead Stanford in scoring (13.0 ppg) and is tied for the team lead in steals (30). His production over the last four games has been even better. Stanford s only All-Tournament Team selection from the Postseason NIT, Bright s 105 assists and 3.6 assists per game lead the team and rank seventh in the Pac-12. He is averaging 11.0 points per game, good for third on the team. Huestis has developed into one of the league s best Sixth Man performers while his 5.2 rebounds per game clip is second to Josh Owens (6.0). Huestis also leads the team with 33 blocked shots. It s a modest total, yet still ranks as the most swats by any Cardinal player since Robin Lopez (83) and Brook Lopez (56) in 2008. The Cardinal is 23-2 combined over the last two years when reaching the 70-point plateau. Rare Road Win In Tough Environment Making Stanford s 74-50 victory over Colorado on Feb. 23 even more impressive was the fact Colorado entered the game undefeated at Coors Events Center against Pac-12 opponents and 13-1 overall. The Buffaloes bounced back with a double-digit victory over Cal three days later, leaving the Cardinal as the only conference squad to win a game in Boulder. Lineups Based On Matchups Head coach Johnny Dawkins employed his 14th different starting lineup on Feb. 25 against Utah, using a combination of Chasson Randle, Anthony Brown, Josh Huestis, Dwight Powell and Josh Owens. Ten different players have received at least one starting nod this year. Winning The Rebound Battle Stanford has owned a strong edge on the glass, averaging 37.3 rebounds per game compared to just 31.3 by its opponents. The Cardinal s rebounding margin (+6.0) ranks 24th in the country. Five different players are averaging at least 3.0 rebounds, led by Josh Owens 6.0 clip. Balanced Scoring A Trademark Stefan Nastic became the 11th Cardinal player to register a double-digit scoring effort with his career-high 11-point outing at on Jan. 29. That surpasses last year s total when 10 players reached double figures in scoring at least once. Plenty Of Minutes To Go Around Head coach Johnny Dawkins has the benefit of employing a rotation that can consistently run 10 players deep. Ten players are averaging at least 10.0 minutes of court time. Preseason NIT Runner-Up Finish Fuels Hot Start Stanford fell just short of upsetting then-no. 5/5 Syracuse on Nov. 25 in the championship game of the Dick s Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off in a 69-63 defeat. Leading 25-24 at halftime and 55-47 with 6:47 left in the game, Stanford was poised to take down its highestranked opponent since a 75-68 home win over No. 3/2 UCLA on Jan. 28, 2007. But Syracuse closed the game on a 15-3 run to escape. Stanford won its first three Preseason NIT contests by double digits, knocking down a season-high nine three-pointers in an 82-67 semifinal win over Oklahoma State following West Regional victories over Fresno State and Colorado State. Dawkins Inks Three To Letters Of Intent Head coach Johnny Dawkins announced the signing of three incoming student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Joining the Cardinal for the 2012-13 campaign are the following: Rosco Allen (Las Vegas, Nev., 6-9, 205-pound forward), Christian Sanders (Houston, Texas, 6-4, 185-pound guard) and Grant Verhoeven (Visalia, Calif., 6-9, 220-pound center). The class is currently ranked as high as No. 25 in the nation by Scout.com.

Hard-Working Zimmermann A Hair Above The Rest by Mark Soltau, www.gostanford.com March 2, 2012 The first thing people notice about Andrew Zimmermann, aside from his 6-foot-8, 230-pound frame, is his beard. One national media outlet voted it the best beard in Division I basketball, which is nice, but not exactly scrapbook material for the senior forward from Oostburg, Wisconsin. It s just something I kind of had fun with, said Zimmermann, one of four Stanford team captains who will close out his home career Sunday against Cal. There s very few times in my life where I have had complete freedom to do what I want with my appearance. Zimmermann, hampered by nagging injuries, has started 20 games for the Cardinal this season. Johnny Dawkins, the Anne and Tony Joseph Director of Men s Basketball, is hardly fond of facial hair, but when Zimmermann showed up for practice with a beard last summer and played well during an exhibition tour in Spain, he cut him slack. Surprised me, said associate head coach Dick Davey. I never thought he would. Dawkins made Zimmermann trim it earlier this year after a trip to New York, but the beard remains. Coach said, I m going to let him do it because I respect how he plays, Zimmermann said. It kind of became a symbol of toughness. Giving everything you have and not caring what other people think. Dwight Powell: College basketball is a completely different game compared to high school/aau summer ball- the speed, the physicality, the mental aspect, the defense. Every team in college is going to have a few guys who are their go-to scorers. They re going to have guys who know their role and come at you with their best. Every possession counts. Blowouts are rare. A lot of games come down to the last four minutes, and that means every possession on both ends matters. Every rebound matters, so physicality is at a higher level. Every free throw matters, so keeping yourself focused is important. The Cardinal dealt a huge blow to the Buffaloes dreams of winning the first Pac-12 Conference title with a 74-50 thrashing Thursday night at the Coors Events Center. Stanford beat Colorado 84-64 at Maples Pavilion on Jan. 14 to pull into a tie for first place in the conference, but had lost seven of nine games since. The rematch figured to be tougher. But the mile-high altitude didn t bother Stanford, and neither did the Buffaloes, who suffered their worst defeat of the season. I don t think any of the guys noticed, sophomore Dwight Powell said of the 5,345-foot elevation. We came here to play basketball, not climb mountains. Read more: www.mercurynews.com
