D ragon S D ialogue The eth Paine Elementary chool PTO Newsletter PTO President s Letter October 2015 It is officially fall! Hopefully you are getting out and enjoying these last days of warmer weather. If you are looking for something fun to do outside, the District 95 Educational Foundation is sponsoring a 1 mile Fun Run or a 5k on Sunday, October 4 th. Please see below for more information. The Seth Paine PTO is planning several events in October. The 5 th Graders have Flag Day and Revolutionary War Days. There is also Freaky Friday, Spooky Saturday, Recipe Rhapsody, and lastly, Red Ribbon Week. We are also starting our month long no-stress fundraiser. More information regarding this will be coming home with your child sometime during the 1 st week of October. You should have, or will soon receive, information from your child s room parents. Please take a moment to fill out the form that they send out. If you are able, please consider donating to the classroom fund, which pays for the classroom parties. It was nice to see so many families at our annual Bingo Night. I think we may have had a record number of families attend. Thank you to the Bingo Night committee for planning a fun night out. As always, if you have any questions or ideas, please feel free to reach out to me. Tara Elder

The Hospitality Committee coordinated the back-to-school luncheon for the teachers and staff on Friday, August 21 st. We brought in a mix of desserts and Bella Luke s catered sandwiches and salads. We are looking forward to hosting two dinners for the teachers and staff during conferences next month. The committee could still use a couple more volunteers. If anyone is interested in helping, please reach out to Jen O Gara. Submitted by Jen O Gara Mark your calendars and save the date for Movie Night coming this November on Friday the 13th! District 95 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run Submitted by Cindy Malin Come to the District 95 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run on Sunday, October 4th. Whichever grade school has the greatest participation wins bragging rights and a trophy to display all year long. Help Seth Paine be a winner! Register here, or simply join us Sunday morning. 5K & 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk 2015 Tickets, Hawthorn Woods Eventbrite Hope to see you there!

Taft-y Apples are here! It's that time of year...your favorite 5th grader will be selling Taffy Apples for Taft. Order from a 5th grader, or simply send in the attached order form (on page 7) with payment to the office and your order will be fulfilled. Thanks for supporting the 5th grade class! The After School Book Club Kicks-Off submitted by Rachel Kamin Over 90 Seth Paine readers joined the After School Book Club for three great discussions on September 28. The Kindergarten & 1 st Grade group read and discussed The Watermelon Seed by Greg Pizzoli. The kids enjoyed a tasty watermelon treat (but made sure not to swallow any seeds!) and created a delicious watermelon slice out of tissue paper. Thank you to Jodi Alt, David Finn, Jennifer Gu, Jennifer Morvaji, Lisa Rucker, Wayne Simons, and Ms Brawley for all of their help. Next up for the Kindergarten & 1 st Graders are Breaking News: Bear Alert by David Biedrzycki and This is a Moose by Richard Morris on Monday, November 9. The 2 nd & 3 rd Graders enjoyed cat treats and milk before their lively discussion of Bad Kitty School Daze by Nick Bruel. They also made very cool and creative Bad Kitty masks. Our volunteers, Liesl Kochanny, Emily Kopp, Audrey Mazzuca, Carmel Pfeifer, Amy Shapero, and Janine Steeves, were a huge help with this large, energetic group of kitties! On Monday, November 9, the 2 nd & 3 rd Graders will discuss two picture books: A Boy and a Jaguar by Alan Rabinowitz and Alex the Parrot by Stephanie Spinner. The 4 th & 5 th Graders had an engaging discussion about Roald Dahl's classic Matilda. Highlights of the afternoon included playing a speed game of "Chalkboard Chase," creating our own blackboard depictions of the story, and -- like the memorable character Bruce Bogtrotter -- enjoying chocolate cake. Thank you Cindy Malin, Debbie Miller & Mrs. Whiteman for a great first session! The 4 th & 5 th Graders are looking forward to discussing Escape from Mr. Lemoncello s Library by Chris Grabenstein on Monday, November 9. Copies of our selections for November 9 are available from the Monarch and Bluestem Award displays near the entrance of the children s department at the Ela Area Public Library as well as from the Seth Paine Library. Watch the Seth Paine website for the flyer with more details and email tracysuy@yahoo.com to RSVP and to volunteer. The book club will continue on January 25 and April 25, 2016 students do not need to attend all of the sessions to participate.

Recipe Rhapsody is scheduled for October 29th from 7-9 pm in the Seth Paine gymnasium! Families new to Seth Paine are encouraged to attend. This adult only event is an excellent way to meet fellow parents while sharing great food! Please RSVP to Sara Woitel at woitel5@gmail.com with a recipe that you will be preparing and number attending. Prizes and games, as well as an electronic recipe book, will be provided to all attendees.
