Ohio Wesleyan University Intramural Sports Program Official Intramural Sports Program By-Laws Thank you for agreeing to be the captain of your team. We hope you enjoy your experience and wish you and your team all the best while participating in these fun activities. All information in this handbook is meant as a guide to participating and we hope it answers any questions you may have. For more specific information concerning procedures of the program, please visit the website at www.intramural.owu.edu or contact the following people in the Intramural Department: Cassie Cunningham (Director) (740) 368-3737 cccunnin@owu.edu Colin Beemiller (Student Director) (614) 403-2498 ctbeemil@owu.edu Grace Naticchia (Student Director) (740) 816-4870 glnattic@owu.edu Article I - Eligibility I II All current students, faculty, and staff of the University shall be eligible to enter any intramural activity promoted by the Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation, except as provided by the by-laws. Intramural team captains, as well as individual participants are responsible for eligibility. Any doubt about eligibility should be referred to the Intramural Council. a) In season intercollegiate athletes are ineligible to participate in intramural events that run concurrently with their varsity season. Additionally, varsity athletes are ineligible to participate in any sport that corresponds to their varsity sport (see following list) Intramural Sport Softball Flag Football Volleyball Basketball Tennis Soccer Varsity Sport Baseball and softball Football Volleyball Basketball Tennis Soccer b) An intercollegiate athlete who is cut from, injured, or drops their sport before the first varsity game shall be considered eligible in the corresponding sport unless the intramural season has already begun. V I II After entering one contest with a given intramural team, a player may not transfer to another intramural team during that season, including playoffs. The Intramural Council reserves the right to put into effect emergency rulings relative to the conduct of the program but will notify all team captains of the change. The Intramural Council may suspend and player indefinitely for misconduct at an intramural event or if it is found that they are ineligible to participate. The Intramural Sports Program Director will make the final decision in all eligibility rulings.

Article II-Registration I II V All necessary entry forms are accessible online at www.intrmural.owu.edu. Entry forms may be printed off or electronically completed but must be turned in on time. Team names must be respectful, fun and G rated and not offensive to anyone including your mother. The IM Council reserves the right to review and modify names if needed. Teams wishing to compete for the All Campus Points must maintain the same name in all sports they compete in. Late entries will be accepted after deadline date but there is no guarantee that they will be able to participate. Late teams will be added to the league if it is possible and they will be kept on file in the event that another team drops out or forfeits. In order to participate, each team must pay a registration fee. The fee is $5 per person ($10 per person for individual sports), not to exceed $30 for any one team. The fee must be turned in no later than at the captain s meeting for the sport you are registering for. This fee will be returned at the completion of the sport season assuming the team has not forfeited more than one game. The IM department is obligated to pay officials and supervisors and uphold facility reservations regardless of the fact that teams do not show up to play. We do not want forfeits to occur so have your team ready to play or call ahead if you know you will not have enough. Article III- Forfeits I II V If a contestant or team fails to appear within five minutes after the scheduled time for a contest, the Intramural Coordinator shall declare the contest a forfeit to the individual or team ready to play. The second forfeit or no-show by a team or individual will result in disqualification from play for the remainder of that sport session. If neither team schedule in a contest together appears within five minutes, a forfeit shall be given to both. A team using an ineligible player shall forfeit all contests in which that individual participated. In an individual sport, ineligible players will be disqualified and the other players shall be ranked accordingly. A team will forfeit any contest if it fails to have the minimum number of players to play the game. Default Policy- The intramural staff understands that team occasionally, due to unforeseen circumstances, may be unable to field a team. For this reason, a team captain may avoid a forfeit by defaulting a game. Below are some guidelines for defaulting: 1) If you are unable to make your game and call by 3pm to notify the IM Director, the contest will be declared a default. A loss will be assessed and the opposing team will be granted a win. 2) After two defaults in a season, future defaults will be considered a forfeit. 3) No defaults are permitted in post season play

Article IV- Protests I V Protests shall not be permitted on judgment calls. All protests must be made in writing with the Intramural Sports Director within twenty-four hours after the contest in question. Team captains and officials shall be permitted to present their version of the case to the Intramural Council. The Intramural Sports Program Director shall make the final decision on all protests. Article V- Postponements I A scheduled match or contest may be postponed or rescheduled due to inclement weather or facility conflicts. All postponed games must be played before the season is complete. Article VI- Rules I All contests shall be governed by the NCAA intercollegiate rules with exceptions being outlined in the intramural rules for each sport. Rules will be provided to the captain for each sport and are available online via the Intramural Sports Program website for each team member to view. Article VII- Team Captain I II Each organization or team should elect or appoint a team captain and a second contact person. The captain s name, second contact person, organization (team name), telephone number, box number, and e-mail address must be submitted on the entry form. The captain or second contact person will be required to attend all scheduled meetings. Duties: This is the most important job connected with the successful functioning of each team. The captain should be an individual who is capable of accepting responsibility and who has the initiative and loyalty to keep their team informed. A good team captain will: a) Complete the entry form and submit by the closing date. b) Collect and turn in registration fee prior to deadline. c) Notify team members regarding time, date, and place of all contests and see that the team members arrive on time to scheduled events. d) See to it that their group does not forfeit a contest. e) Inform team members of the rules of each sport. f) Be responsible for the conduct of team members and work to support good sportsmanship in the intramural program.

Article VIII- Officials I II Intramural sports officials are representatives of the Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation and shall be compensated for services rendered. Officials are to be familiar with the by-laws as outlined in this document. Officials shall have the authority to penalize or disqualify players for unsportsmanlike conduct or for a violent act such as fighting or dangerous play. In extreme cases officials are to report incidents to the Intramural Sports Director and respective Intramural Coordinator. Officials may also suspend or forfeit a contest when conditions warrant. V I II III X Official are expected to arrive at least ten minutes prior to a scheduled contest, their jurisdiction beginning at this time. Officials are encouraged not to wear t-shirts/shorts which indicate membership in a fraternity, sorority or other group. A dark blue or black shirt is recommended. During a contest, the officials shall be the sole authority in enforcing and interpreting the rules of the contest. Judgment decisions by an official must be accepted and not objected to by the players. Protests will only be considered in cases where officials have erroneously applied or interpreted a rule and such a decision has caused a team to lose a contest it might have won. Calls concerning forfeiting games and suspending players have to be cleared through the Intramural Coordinator first. If no officials arrive for a scheduled contest or only one arrives for a contest, the game may be rescheduled. In low risk sports, the contest may be played with one official or coordinator. Unless the rules of a contest indicate otherwise, multiple game officials working together shall have equal authority in enforcing rules (this does not apply for timers or scorekeeper.) Officials must work together as a team to ensure a well-administered and safe contest. Training of officials will be conducted at mandatory meetings, which will include on the floor/field training with experienced officials and the respective Intramural Coordinator. Officials will meet thirty minutes prior to the beginning of each sport season for the training session. Officials will be compensated for all training sessions. Dismissal Policy: Officials will receive a yellow warning slip after their first missed shift, a pink dismissal slip for the second. The Intramural Council will not tolerate those persons who do not show up to work their shift. It is the responsibility of each official to find a substitute and report the substitute s name to the Intramural Coordinator. Each official will be provided with a sub list. Article IX- Sportsmanship Points System The IM Staff believes good sportsmanship to be an extremely important quality and seeks to encourage its development. The following sportsmanship rating system will govern the program: 1) Grading scale of 0 to 4 points is used in determining the sportsmanship rating for each contest. Red and yellow cards may be used by the game officials and/or Intramural staff to warn and disqualify players.

2) Rating will be completed at the conclusion of the contest by the game official, and/or the intramural staff on site. Half, or.5 ratings may be used (i.e 3.5) 3) Team captains must speak with the Intramural Director if their team receives a 0, 1 or 2 rating before they can participate in their next scheduled contest. 4) Each team must have an average of a 3.0 rating during league play in order to participate in post season competition. 5) Sportsmanship rating scale is attached for further information. Article X- Tie Breaking Procedures 6) Red and yellow cards: A yellow card is issued by an official or Intramural personnel on site when someone needs to cool off during a contest. A red card is issued when someone needs to be immediately removed from a contest in order to prevent injury or escalation. Anyone receiving a red card must meet with the IM Director within 24 hours of receiving the red card. Any team receiving 3 yellow cards or 1 yellow card and a red card within one contest will forfeit the game immediately and be referred to the IM council. Tiebreaker System- 1) Head to Head results(s) between teams 2) Goal / point differential 3) Depending on the Sport, other tiebreakers may be considered by the Intramural Council. Article XI- All Sports Champion and Plaque I II V Each team will receive points based on results of each contest. All sports will be played with a championship and consolation game, assuring a first, second, third and fourth place team. The first place team will be awarded four points, the second place team will be awarded three points, the third place team will be awarded two points and the fourth place team will be awarded one point to go towards the All Sports Championship. If a team or teams forfeit either the championship or consolation game, they will not receive the intramural points for that sport. To accumulate points for a team playing multiple sports, the same team must be used throughout the year in every session and event. At the end of the academic year the Intramural Council will tally points and the team with the most points will be recognized as the All Sports Champion and their name will be added to a plaque that is displayed in Edwards Gym. This constitution was amended in September, 2010 and takes effect September 1, 2010.
