Ogwumike Within Range Of Stanford s Scoring Top Five Entering Saturday night s game against Washington, senior forward Nnemkadi Ogwumike stands sixth on Stanford s all-time scoring list at,055 career points. After passing Jeanne Ruark-Hoff (1978-83) for sixth on the list Thursday against Washington State, Nneka is just seven points behind Nicole Powell (,06 points) and behind of the No. 4 spot held by Val Whiting (,077). Giving The Kid The Keys To The Car After coming in off the bench for the first 14 games of the season, freshman guard Amber Orrange has started the past three games for Stanford and effectively been given the keys to the powerful Cardinal offense. Orrange, a native of Houston, Texas, has directed the offense masterfully over the past three games, passing out nine assists against just one turnover as the Cardinal has gone 3-0. Over Stanford s first seven conference games, Orrange owns an incredible assist-to-turnover ratio of 6.67 (0 assists against just three turnovers). On the other side of the court, Orrange s pesky defense has resulted in seven steals over the past three games, showing fearlessness underneath the rookie s softspoken demeanor. No Good Looks The Stanford defense has gone into lockdown mode over its past three games, limiting its opponents (Utah, Colorado, Washington State) to a combined 138 points, or 46.0 per game. Even more impressive, the Cardinal defense consistently got hands in the faces of opposing shooters as the Utes, Buffs and Cougars combined to shoot a paltry 9.4 percent (5-for-177) from the field and 17.0 percent (10-for-59) from 3-point range. Over these last three games, the Cardinal defense has held Utah, Colorado and Washington State to first-half scoring totals of 0, 15 and 0 points, respectively. Stanford s B-41 Bomber Watch out Consolidated Aircraft, because Stanford has unveiled its newest long-range bomber in the form of the B-41 or, in other terms, freshman Bonnie Samuelson, wearer of the No. 41 jersey. Samuelson, a Huntington Beach native, leads the Cardinal with 5 3-pointers so far this season and is second amongst Pac-1 shooters with a 40.8-percent 3-point field-goal percentage. Samuelson s total of 5 treys is currently tied for ninth all-time amongst Cardinal freshman with Christy Hedgpeth s 1990-91 total. Conference Dominance Since the advent of Pac-10 women s basketball in 1986-87, Stanford has been far and away the class of the conference in terms of victories and end-of-season awards and honors. Following the 010-11 regular season, the Cardinal has won outright or shared the regular-season title 0 times out of a possible 5, while the next team on the list, Washington, has won the conference title just three times. Stanford has also dominated the Pac-10 Tournament, capturing eight of the 10 tournament titles since the inaugural draw in 00. Currently, Stanford has won a record 64 straight games against its Pac-1 foes (including Pac-10 Tournament contests) dating back to Jan., 009. The team s 706-136 (.839) overall mark since 1986-87 and 399-58 (.873) mark in Pac-1 play (both through Jan. 19, 01) are both by far the top marks in the conference. On the awards and honors side of things, the Cardinal again out-paces its opponents. Following the announcement of the 011 Pac-10 honors, a Stanford player has won or shared the Pac-10 Player of the Year award 15 of 5 times since 1986-87, won the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year award eight times, the Pac-10 Defender of the Year award once and head coach Tara VanDerveer has been honored as the conference s coach of the year on 11 occasions, with current associate head coach Amy Tucker and Marianne Stanley sharing the honor in 1995-96 while VanDerveer was on sabbatical coaching the U.S. Olympic Team. Stanford players have captured a conference-best 8 Pac-10/Pac-1 Player of the Week honors through Jan. 16, 01. Finally, the Cardinal leads the conference with 54 All-Pac-10 first-team selections. Injury Report Freshman guards Jasmine Camp (stress fracture revealed Dec. 19) and Alex Green (torn Achilles tendon suffered Nov. 18) will miss the rest of the 011-1 season. Forward Mikaela Ruef (foot) has not played since Nov. 17 against Old Dominion.

Against Oregon State on Jan. 7, Nneka became Stanford s fourth (and the Pac-1 s eighth) member of the,000-point/1,000-rebound Club, achieving both marks during the game. She joined Jayne Appel (006-10), Nicole Powell (000-04) and Val Whiting (1989-93) in that class. Through Jan. 19, Nneka has scored,055 points, sixth-best on Stanford s all-time scoring list. Her career scoring average stands fifth at 16.4 points per game. Ogwumike has already passed Katy Steding and Jeanne Ruark Hoff on Stanford s all-time rebounding list this season. Her current total of 1,041 rebounds is good for fifth on Stanford s list through Jan. 19. In addition, her 59.5 field-goal percentage is currently tops in the Stanford record book. Home Sweet Home Jan. 19 s win over Washington State extended Stanford s program-record home winning streak to 7 games. Stanford has compiled a 365-3 (.919) record at home since Tara VanDerveer took over the program in 1985-86, and are 16-1 (.947) all-time against Pac-1 foes at home (since 1986-87). Since 000-01, Stanford has also won 166 of its 178 games at Maples. The last time the Cardinal lost at Maples Pavilion was March 19, 007 against Florida State in a second-round NCAA Tournament game. Stanford s last conference (as well as regular-season) loss at Maples was on Feb. 4, 007, when California posted a 7-57 victory over the Cardinal. Another Marquee Schedule For The Cardinal The 011-1 slate includes 11 NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago, with eight of Stanford s 11 non-conference opponents having reached the Big Dance in 011. Besides the opening weekend against Texas and Gonzaga, the Cardinal traveled to Connecticut (Nov. 1), Xavier (Nov. 5) and Fresno State (Dec. 4). Stanford hosted UC Davis (Nov. 30) and Princeton (Dec. 17), and, in its annual battle, hosted the Tennessee Lady Volunteers on Dec. 0 at Maples Pavilion. Stanford s conference slate has also added new challenges with the addition of Colorado and Utah to the Pac- 1. Ogwumikes Named To National Player of the Year Candidate Lists Forwards Chiney and Nnemkadi Ogwumike have been named to the watch lists of the Wade Trophy, Wooden Award and Naismith Trophy for 011-1. Nnemkadi Ogwumike, in her fourth season on The Farm, is a two-time Wooden Award All- American (010-11) and was named to the award s final ballot last season. In 010-11 she was selected to three additional All-America Teams, the WBCA Coaches squad, the USBWA s team and to the Associated Press Second Team. She led the Pac-10 in scoring (17.5 ppg) and shooting percentage (58.6) in 010-11. Younger sister Chiney Ogwumike is in her sophomore season at Stanford in 011-1. Last year, she led the Cardinal with 8.0 rebounds (81 total) per game, averaged 11.7 points a game and shot 57.4 percent from the field en route to being named Pac-10 Freshman of the Year. Her allaround performance, one that included 5 steals and 9 blocked shots as she established a fierce defensive reputation, also earned her selections to the All-Pac-10 Team, All-Freshman Team and All-Defensive Team. Nnemkadi Ogwumike Named To Associated Press Preseason All-America Team Senior forward Nnemkadi Ogwumike was one of five players named to the Associated Press Preseason All-America Team on Nov. 1. It is the second straight year in which Ogwumike was named to the team, and she joins Brittney Griner (Baylor), Skylar Diggins (Notre Dame), Shenise Johnson (Miami FL) and Shekinna Stricklen (Tennessee). She joins former Stanford standouts Nicole Powell and Candice Wiggins as the only Cardinal players to make the AP s Preseason All- America Team.
