SOUTHEAST TEXAS MARCHING PERCUSSION CAMP July 12-15, 2010 We are pleased to announce the 7 th annual Southeast Texas Marching Percussion Camp, hosted by Kountze High School and the Kountze High School Band under the direction of Robert Fife, Brad Long, and Becca Briguglio. This camp will present a fresh approach to the technical and musical elements of marching percussion performance, as well as techniques on drumset, cymbals, and keyboards. Specific topics will include. Hand and body positioning Proper grips for all instruments Proper stroke techniques Drumset independence and playing styles Introduction to the height system of drumming Timing, listening, and balance of the ensemble Advanced rudiments Becoming a musical percussionist This year s guest clinician is Mr. Hawley Joe Gary. Hawley Joe Gary teaches drumset and marching percussion in Lafayette, Louisiana. Joe has been the drumline instructor and arranger for the University of Louisiana at Lafayette for the past three years. He is a former member and instructor of the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps. Former instructors include Marty Hurley, Ralph Hardimon, and Mike Mann.
The Southeast Texas Marching Percussion Camp Instructional Staff includes: Lonny Benoit Lonny Benoit is Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Percussion Studies at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana. In addition to his duties at McNeese State University, Benoit remains an active performer and clinician throughout the United States and Japan. Travis Fife Travis Fife is Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Percussion Studies at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. Travis also arranges percussion music for numerous high schools in Texas, and Louisiana, and remains an active percussion instructor and clinician throughout Texas and Louisiana. The camp is open to all students who are currently completing grades 8-12. (Graduating seniors are welcome and urged to come!!) Each student attending the camp must provide his or her own Snare drum, tenors, bass drum, or cymbals Drum stand (recommended) Drum carrier Two pairs of sticks The camp will be held at Kountze High School in Kountze, Texas (July 12-15, 2010). Cost of the camp will be $150. The daily schedule will run from 9 AM to 5 PM with an hour break for lunch from 12 1 PM. Meals will again be provided for a minimal cost. On Thursday afternoon at 11 AM the students will perform an exhibition and concert. Registration will be Monday morning, July 12 th at 8:30 AM. SOUTHEAST TEXAS MARCHING PERCUSSION CAMP July 12-15 Dear We look forward to having you at camp on July 12 th. Listed below is very important information which will help you have a great week with us. Review the rules and reminders listed below and give me a call if you have any further questions. You will not be allowed to leave the campus during the day. Lunch breaks will be too short for you to go to town. We will be making a lunch available for you each day. The cost to you will be less than $5.00. If you do not want to use this option, you will need to bring a lunch with you. We ask that you use the following dress code for the week of camp. Wear a T-shirt, jeans, or knee length shorts, and tennis shoes. DO NOT wear flip flops, sandals, etc. The schedule for Monday, July 12 is as follows: 8:00 AM 8:25 AM Registration at band hall 8:45 AM Organizational meeting for all campers 9:00 AM Camp Begins Equipment and supplies needed are as follows: 1. Your instrument, instrument stand, and carrier 2. Sticks, mallets (at least 2 pairs, pit bring mallets) 3. Pencil and notebook 4. Large towel 5. Cymbals bring a pair of gloves with fingers cut out (i.e. batting gloves, weightlifting gloves) You will be able to leave your equipment overnight.
