LOUIS CARDINALS (74-68) SEPTEMBER 10, 2017 at BUSCH STADIUM -- St. Louis, MO --- GAME #144/ROAD #71 RHP IVAN NOVA (11-12, 4.11 ERA) vs. RHP MICHAEL WACHA (11-7, 4.21 ERA) THE PIRATES...have lost their last four games after winning four in a row...won a season-high six consecutive games from 7/16-21 and posted a 12-2 record between 7/4-21 (have gone 18-28 since then)...scored a season-high 14 runs on 7/9 at Chicago (NL)...Had a 70-73 record after 143 games last season (70-74 after 144). In two career starts against the Cardinals, Nova has gone 1-1 with a 3.29 ERA (13.2ip/5er)...He threw just 78 pitches in a complete game, but suffered a 2-1 loss to Lance Lynn earlier this season at Busch Stadium on 4/17 (gave up a solo homer to Kolten Wong in the third inning and another single tally in the seventh)...nova also won a 6-3 decision (5.2ip/3er) against Mike Leake in the inaugural Little League Classic in Williamsport, PA on 8/20. HISTORIC ROOKIE SEASON: Josh Bell s 24 home runs are the second-highest total in club history for a rookie behind Jason Bay s 26 in 2004...Bell is just one of just 11 rookies in team history to produce at least 83 RBI and that total is the highest by a Bucco rookie since Maurice Van Robays had 116 in 1940 (club rookie record)...among all Major League rookies this season, only New York s Aaron Judge (87) has driven in more runs than Bell. SAVES AS A SOUTHPAW: LHP Felipe Rivero has recorded 18 saves in 19 opportunities for the Pirates this season; the second-highest save total in a single season by a Pittsburgh lefthander...since saves became an official statistic in 1969, Mike Gonzalez holds the club record for most saves in a season by a southpaw (24 in 2006). NO (BIG) FLY ZONE: Among all Major League teams, only the Arizona starting pitchers have surrendered fewer home runs (95) than the Pittsburgh starting staff (97)...Entering today s action, the Bucco starters have given up just one home run in the last nine games and 55 innings...overall, the Pirates pitchers have surrendered three home runs in the last nine games after serving up four at Wrigley Field on August 30. 20 SOMETHINGS: Andrew McCutchen is one of five active players who have hit 20 or more home runs in each of the last seven seasons...the others are Jose Bautista (8 seasons), Nelson Cruz (9), Adam Jones (7) and Giancarlo Stanton (8).
