UNC head football coach O. Kay Dalton continues to get better with time. Dalton and the Bears moved up to Division I-AA football in 23 and posted an overall mark of 9-2, including road wins over I-AA opponents Montana State (14-1), Southern Utah (29-25) and UC-Davis (35-28). The Bears set 25 offensive records in 23 en route to earning a No. 19 ranking in both the coaches and media polls. Dalton and the Bears put together a tremendous 22 season which ended with the Bears winning a North Central Conference championship and a berth into the national semifinals of the Division II playoffs. Dalton was named Region V Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association. Northern Colorado athletic director Jim Fallis tabbed Dalton as the 14th head coach in school history at a press conference on Dec. 6, 1999. No stranger to the UNC program, Dalton served as offensive coordinator at the school from 1989 until his appointment as head coach. Under his tutelage, the Bears offense thrived, consistently ranking among the national leaders in total offense and scoring offense. In 1999, the Bears ranked seventh in Division II in scoring offense (39.5 ppg), 11th in passing offense (274.5 yards/game) and 15th in total offense (419.9 yards/game). The Bears have set or tied 9 offensive records since Dalton arrived at UNC, including points in season (437 in 1998), total offense in a season (5,69 yards in 22) and passing yards in a season (3,28 in 22). Under Dalton s guidance, quarterback Corte McGuffey posted two of the finest offensive seasons ever in UNC history in 1998 and 1999. McGuffey won the 1999 Harlon Hill Trophy after finishing second in the balloting as a junior. Dalton carries an impressive resume which includes coaching at all levels of football. He has served as an assistant coach with four National Football League (NFL) teams, two Canadian Football League (CFL) teams and two NCAA Division I programs before arriving at UNC in 1989. This is Dalton s fourth head coaching 5th Season at UNC (9th overall) 66-27 all-time record 33-15 record at UNC Named North Central Conference Coach of the Year (22) Earned Region V Coach of the Year honors by the American Football Coaches Association (22) Served as head coach at Western State College (1961-65). He then served as the defensive coordinator with the Montreal Allouettes, before being named the team s head coach in 1968, a position he held until 1971. After leaving Montreal, Dalton spent one season as offensive line/receivers coach with the British Columbia Lions before moving to the University of Colorado as its quarterback/receivers coach and offensive coordinator. GAME 1: NORTHERN COLORADO 15, NDSU 13 SEPT. 4, 24 NOTTINGHAM FIELD GREELEY, COLO. GREELEY, Colo. - The first conference game of the inaugural season of the Great West Football Conference is in the books. The University of Northern Colorado Bears defeated the North Dakota State University Bison 15-13 at Nottingham Field in Greeley bringing the Bears home win streak to 16 games. Defense was the theme of the day as the Bears intercepted the Bison offense five times and recovered a fumble. North Dakota State did some defensive work of their own by pulling down two interceptions, recovering a fumble and denying the Bears offense admittance to the end zone. Leading the defensive effort for the Bears was junior safety Reed Doughty who had two interceptions, a forced fumble and game-high 17 tackles. Teammates Thomas Smith, junior linebacker, and Ryan Palmer, senior linebacker, who had 11 and nine tackles respectively, complemented Doughty s effort. Palmer also had one of the Bears five interceptions. Junior place kicker Justin Zaitz came up one kick short of becoming the sole leader for most field goals in a game. Zaitz made five field goals tying a Bears all-time record. It was the Bears inability to reach the end zone that led to Zaitz s record-breaking performance. The Bears offense only posted 233 total yards compared to 428 yards by North Dakota State. On paper the Bison beat the Bears in almost every statistical category but it was the ineffective performance of the Bison senior quarterback Tony Stauss that led to the Bears victory. Stauss tossed five interceptions before finally being replaced by redshirt freshman Steve Walker who mounted a productive comeback charge. Walker came off the bench after trailing 15- to lead his team down the field for two touchdowns late in the fourth quarter although NDSU failed ona twopoint conversion attempt that would have tied the game. Walker went 1-for-1 for 112 yards on the afternoon giving his a team a chance to win the game with a final field goal attempt with eight seconds to go. But it was the Bears defense that rose to the challenge again. After a poor snap by the Bison center, the Bears Jacob Carlson was able to get a paw on the field goal attempt causing the miss and giving the Bears the victory.
