The Wolves have finished among the top three teams in the conference in each of the past three seasons. NSU went 11-8-0 overall in 2006 and was tied for second in the NSIC with a 6-3-0 record. One of the team s greatest strengths is on defense. Northern continues to put athletes on the field who work hard to keep the ball out of the net and allow the Wolves to be competitive in all matches played. NSU was second in the league last season in goals allowed with a 1.00 goal-per-game average. And while the Wolves finished last in the NSIC in saves (3.11/g), the defensive effort by the team resulted in opponents posting just 79 shots on goal over the course of the season. Northern s biggest challenge in 2007 will be in finding a replacement for graduated senior Melissa Gamble. Gamble led the Wolves in goals and points scored each of the four years of her career and became NSU s alltime leader in goals (49) with 11 goals in 2006. The Wolves will look to a number of players, including Larissa Strychun, Alisha Martinez, and Katherine Bronson, to fill the void left by Gamble s departure. The goalkeeper position should continue to be strong for the Wolves despite the loss of 2006 senior Theresa Alexander. Talented junior Catherine Grace (Littleton, Colo.) saw just over 500 minutes of action in 2006. She posted a record of 5-1-0 in seven games played and had three shutouts. Grace had a goal against average of just 0.72. Also assisting in the goal will be incoming freshman Dee Wood (Bothell, Wash.). The Wolves incoming class consists of nine athletes from five states across the country. They bring a great deal of speed an athleticism, as well as big game experience. Almost all of the incoming players have played in their state tournaments and have high-level club and regional tournament experience.
NSU SOCCER TEAM NEWS AND NOTES - PAGE 2 Head Coach: Steve Kehm... Steve Kehm enters his tenth season as head coach of the Northern State soccer team, accumulating a winning record of 108-61-12. He led the 2006 squad to a second place NSIC regular season finish, coming one season after the Wolves made an appearance in the NSIC Tournament Championship game in 2005, where they lost in a shootout to regular season champion Winona State. In 2004 Kehm led the Wolves to a tie for second place in the NSIC posting a 5-2 record. Kehm is the Director of Coaching for the Northern Blast club soccer program. He is also a member of the college soccer academy camp staff and holds several national coaching licenses and endorsements. In addition to their prowess on the field, the Wolves also excel in the classroom; last year marked the seventh consecutive year that Wolves have been honored with the Adidas/NSCAA team academic award. The Wolves have also produced two Academic All-Americans and NSU s team GPA consistently ranks among the best in the nation. Assistant Coaches: Coach Kehm is assisted by Melissa Gamble, a four-year soccer standout at NSU. 2007 Soccer Team Roster No.Name Pos. Ht. Yr. Hometown 0 Danille Woods GK 5-9 Fr. Bothell, WA (Henry M. About the Opposition NSU SOCCER TEAM NEWS AND NOTES - PAGE 3 Colorado State-Pueblo: Based out of Pueblo, Colorado, the ThunderWolves are a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. They finished the 2006 season with a 6-10-3 overall record and went 3-6-3 in RMAC play. The team has a new head coach and returns three seniors to the squad. They have been picked to finish sixth in the RMAC this season. Mesa State: Also a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, Mesa State is located in Grand Junction, Colorado. The Mavericks shared second place in the RMAC last season after posting a record of 8-2-2 in league duals. They went 11-6-2 overall. In the 2007 RMAC Preseason Poll, Mesa State was tied for third place with Regis. They are led by preseason All-RMAC midfielder, senior Lauren Sell. Colorado Christian: Colorado Christian finished last in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in 2006, posting a record of 1-9-2 through league games. They went 4-12-2 overall. The Cougars hope that returning seven starters to the 2007 roster will bring more successful results this season. League coaches picked CCU to finish ninth in 2007. A sign of their youth, the Cougars have no seniors on this year s squad and will rely on younger players to bring the team success. 2006 Final NSIC Standings: NSIC Games Overall Games Institution W-L-T Pct GF GA W-L-T Pct GF GA ----------- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Winona State 8-0-1.944 25 3 14-5-2.714 43 14 Bemidji State 6-3-0.667 22 10 10-7-1.583 40 20 Northern State 6-3-0.667 16 9 11-8-0.579 34 19 Concordia-St. Paul 6-3-0.667 12 7 11-11-1.500 26 38 U-Mary 4-3-2.556 16 9 9-9-3.500 29 28 Wayne State 4-4-1.500 14 15 10-10-1.500 33 35 MSU Moorhead 2-5-2.333 5 13 4-11-3.306 22 28 Upper Iowa 2-6-1.278 6 15 5-12-2.316 22 38 SW Minnesota St. 2-6-1.278 9 29 3-10-2.267 12 45 UM, Crookston 1-8-0.111 4 19 2-15-1.139 9 41 NSIC Current Standings: NSIC Overall Team Win Loss Pct Win Loss Pct Bemidji State 0 0.000 0 0.000 #6 Concordia-St. Paul 0 0.000 0 0.000 U-Mary 0 0.000 0 0.000 UM, Crookston 0 0.000 0 0.000 MSU Moorhead 0 0.000 0 0.000 Northern State 0 0.000 0 0.000 #25 SW Minnesota St. 0 0.000 0 0.000 Upper Iowa 0 0.000 0 0.000 #21 Wayne State 0 0.000 0 0.000 Winona State 0 0.000 0 0.000 NSCAA/adidas National Rankings (Preseason Poll) Rk School Previous W-L-T 1 Metro State 1 24-2 - 0 2 Grand Valley State 2 19-2 - 1 3 West Chester University (Pa.) 3 23-1 - 0 4 Tampa (Fla.), University of 4 18-3 - 1 5 UC San Diego 6 20-2 - 2 6 Nebraska-Omaha 5 19-1 - 2 7 Franklin Pierce College (N.H.) 6 18-3 - 1 8 Tusculum College (Tenn.) 8 14-3 - 3 9 Carson-Newman College 10 14-2 - 1 10 St. Edward s University 9 18-3 - 1 11 West Florida, University of 11 15-3 - 3 12 Seattle Pacific University 14 17-5 - 0 13 Washburn University (Kan.) 12 15-2 - 5 14 Saint Rose (N.Y.), College of 13 17-3 - 1 15 Indiana University (Pa.) 15 15-7 - 0 16 Indianapolis, University of 18 17-5 - 1 17 Central Oklahoma 16 18-4 - 1 17 Seattle University 17 15-3 - 2 19 Missouri Southern State 22 11-4 - 5 19 Saint Leo College (Fla.) 19 14-3 - 2 21 Columbus State University 20 18-4 - 1 22 Quincy University (Ill.) 25 16-5 - 0 23 New Haven, University of 24 12-5 - 4 24 Massachusetts-Lowell RV 10-5 - 4 25 West Texas A&M University 23 14-4 - 1 Also receiving votes: Bridgeport (Conn.), Nova Southeastern (Fla.), Armstrong Atlantic State (Ga.), Bryant (R.I.), Mercyhurt (Pa.), Truman State (Mo.)
