The Lady Griz (1-1) and Coyotes (4-1) will p off at 7 p.m. at Dahlberg Arena. To date (): A er opening the season with a 76-52 loss at Gonzaga, another mid-major heavyweight, a game the Lady Griz trailed 42-17 at the half, rebounded nearly two weeks later with a thorough dismantling of Providence on Tuesday, 90-45. had seven players score between nine and 15 points -- three of them true freshmen -- as the Lady Griz shot 51.1 percent, just the second me they ve shot be er than 50 percent in 63 games under third-year coach Shannon Schweyen. To date (): The Coyotes, ranked eighth this week in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll, are off to a 4-1 start, their lone setback coming on the road at Drake, 76-64, against a team ranked first in the mid-major poll. opened the season with a 77-65 road win at Creighton, added a pair of home blowouts over Incarnate Word and the College of Saint Mary, and handed Wichita State its first loss of the season, 73-64, on Wednesday night in a game played in Sioux Falls, 60 miles from USD s campus in Vermillion. Coverage: Saturday s game can be watched on either Pluto TV or WatchBigSky.com or heard locally on KMPT 930 AM/99.7 FM, with Tom Stage and Dick Slater calling the ac on. Upcoming: will host the 38th edi- on of the Lady Griz Classic next weekend, when UC Davis, Nevada and Northern Illinois make their way to Missoula. Games will be played at noon and 2 p.m. next Saturday and Sunday, with opening against Northern Illinois. Twelve things to know for Saturday: 1. State women s basketball has more cachet -- the Jackrabbits made a faster move from Division II na onal power to Division I mid-major power -- but South Dakota has slowly been closing the gap, making the Coyotes one of the best teams you ve probably yet to pay much a en on to. One of those teams went a perfect 14-0 in the Summit League last winter, and it wasn t the Jacks. Instead it was the Coyotes, who twice defeated SDSU during the regular season to become the first Summit team to go undefeated in 24 years. But as a reminder that State is -- for now -- s ll the boss of I-29, the Jackrabbits won the Summit League championship game over the Coyotes 65-50, relega ng once again to the WNIT for the fourth straight year, despite winning 110 games the last four seasons. 2. is 56-17 under third-year coach Dawn Plitzuweit, the 2017-18 Summit League Coach of the Year. She led the Coyotes to 29 wins last season and the quarterfinals of the WNIT. USD enters Saturday s game having won 27 of its last 30 games da ng back to last December. 3. A brief history: made the move from Division II to Division I beginning in 2008-09 under coach Ryun Williams. A er leading the Coyotes to the WNIT in his fourth year, Williams le for the head job at Colorado State, where he s ll is. He was replaced by Amy Williams, who got things rolling a li le bit more. USD went to the NCAA tournament in 2014, in Williams s second year, and won the WNIT in 2016 a er losing to State in the Summit League tle game. Williams turned that into the head job at Nebraska, her alma mater. Enter Dawn Plitzuweit, who is in Year 3. She played at Michigan Tech under now Wisconsin-Green Bay coach Kevin Borseth. She coached under him at Tech and Green Bay before going out on her own and coaching at Grand Valley State for five seasons. She led the Lakers to the 2006 Division II tle. She le Grand Valley State to rejoin Borseth when he took the Michigan job in 2007. The staff spent five years in Ann Arbor. When Borseth returned to Green Bay in 2012-13 -- which he got a er SDSU s Aaron Johnston agreed to the job, then recon-

Arens and Duffy were both first-team All- Summit League selec ons a year ago and made the conference s six-player preseason team last month. McKeever, honorable men- on a year ago, made last month s five-player preseason second team. Through five games, it s junior forward Taylor Frederick leading the team in scoring at 13.6 points on 56.5 percent shoo ng. She is one of four players averaging in double figures. McKeever is averaging 12.0 points, Duffy 11.4 points and sophomore Hannah Sjerven, who played one year at New Mexico before transferring to USD and si ng out last season, 10.2 points on 67.7 percent shoo ng. They are very talented, very experienced, very composed. They ve played in front of some big crowds and in some big games, said coach Shannon Schweyen. They have five good basketball players on the floor at all mes. They all shoot it, they all do things pre y well. They are very balanced in their a ack, so it s hard to focus on just one person. We ll be tested for sure. 5. and are playing for the first me. Note: The Lady Griz played that other team -- State -- in Iowa City early in the 2016-17 season and lost 84-43. 6. In the most recent CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll, Drake is No. 1, South Dakota State No. 2, Gonzaga No. 4, Green Bay No. 5, No. 8. Idaho is the lone team to make the top 25, coming in at No. 18. 7. So, yes, Saturday is going to be a good measuring s ck. Is be er now than the team that got beat handily at Gonzaga two and a half weeks ago? Was Tuesday s victory over Providence a big step forward or just the expected result over an NAIA opponent? Saturday will reveal much. 8. There was plenty to like on Tuesday. A er finding itself ed 10-10 midway through the first quarter against a team that was 7-0, outscored Providence 35-11 the rest of the half, then controlled play throughout the final 20 minutes, pu ng up another 45 points. shot 51.5 percent not because of easy putbacks -- the Lady Griz had only five offensive rebounds for the game and six second-chance points -- or because it was ge ng to the basket at will. Instead it came from some efficient -- and effec ve -- offensive execu on. Fi een of s first 16 baskets came by way of assist. Year-by-Year Year Overall Conf. No. 1, it was great for us to get back on the floor (a er nearly two weeks between games), said Schweyen. You re always concerned about a layoff like that. How are we going to play? How are we going to respond to having that much me off? I really felt like the girls were fired up to get out there, and they transferred that into offensive execu on and knocking down shots. 9. Lost amid the din of 5,000-plus schoolage kids and the intoxica ng point total was this: the team s lone senior, Jace Henderson, scored four points on 1-of-7 shoo ng and junior Madi Schoening, who had started the first 62 games of her career, was sidelined with an injury. For us to put up 90 without Jace having a big game and Madi not being out there, I m not sure we could do that that o en, said Schweyen, whose team reached 90 points for the first me with her as head coach. It was great to see so many people get out on the floor and make baskets. Our bench came in and really played well and gave us a big spark and big li. It was encouraging. 10. s bench scored just seven points in the season-opening loss at Gonzaga. On Tuesday: 37 points on 15-of-25 shoo ng. Freshman Carmen Gfeller, who didn t play against the Bulldogs as Schweyen considered redshirt op ons, made her debut and looked college-ready, scoring a game-high 15 points on 6-of-8 shoo ng. Fellow freshmen Ka e Mayhue, who got the start in place of Schoening, and Jordyn Schweyen, combined for 19 points and 4-for- 4 shoo ng from the arc. Taylor Goligoski and Emma Stockholm both had 13 points and six rebounds, McKenzie Johnston had 13 points, six assists and five rebounds, and Gabi Harrington made another splash off the bench, totaling 13 points, six rebounds, five steals and three assists. It s no wonder upped its points-perpossession from 0.68 at Gonzaga, the team s lowest efficiency ra ng since early in the 2016-17 season, to 1.13 on Tuesday, a metric exceeded just twice in Schweyen s first two seasons. I thought we shared the ball well. We had lots of different people making plays and ge ng assists, which is always a nice thing to see, said Schweyen. It s always fun when that kind of playing is contagious and it rubs off on each other. That s how it felt that day. 11. Lost in those offensive numbers was a pre y salty defensive effort against a team that arrived with some offensive momentum. The Argos shot 21.9 percent in the first half, 22.2 in the second, and the Lady Griz limited Providence s leading scorer, Parker Esary, a 6-foot-1 post, to four points on 2-of-9 shooting. Providence went 3 for 21 from the arc. They got some good looks and could have shot be er than they did, but credit to our defense. I thought we played with some intensity, said Schweyen. We created lots of turnovers with steals and ge ng finger ps on passes, which wrecked a li le havoc on them. They like to get post touches, and we tried to make that difficult. That took away from what they like to do. (Esary s) a nice post player when she gets it in the low block. 12. went a dy 6 for 11 from the 3-point line on Tuesday. This a er going 2 for 15 at Gonzaga and shoo ng 26.6 percent from the arc the previous two seasons. One game is a small sample size, very, very small, but maybe this can be the team that finally addresses that ongoing weakness. Game notes: * Through the first weeks of the season, leads the Big Sky in blocks (6.0/g) and (fewest) personal fouls (15.0/g). The Lady Griz rank in the top 50 na onally in blocks (16th), assists (19th, 20.0/g), assist-to-turnover ra o (35th, 1.29), personal fouls and free throw percentage (49th,.750). * Teams from the Big Sky lead the na on in three categories: Portland State, field goal percentage defense (.251); Idaho, 3-point field goals made (14.3/g); Sacramento State, turnovers forced (34.0/g). * Emma Stockholm entered her junior year a 53.1-percent shooter from the free throw line, going 26 for 49 her first two years. This year she is off to an encouraging 7-for-8 start. * Gabi Harrington has taken 12 shots through two games. Only one has been from the 3-point line, which shows an expansion and maturing of her game. During her freshman season two years ago, more than half of her shots came from the arc. * Abby Anderson has seven blocks through two games and in just 31 minutes played. That s one rejec on every 4.4 minutes. * On a rare occasion that McKenzie Johnston didn t play nearly every minute at the point -- she got 15 minutes off on Tuesday -- freshman Ka e Mayhue took over for stretches and had an effec ve ou ng, with 10 points on five shots and four assists against two turnovers. * is averaging 11 made 3-pointers in its four wins. In the Coyotes lone loss, at Drake, they went 4 for 26 from the arc.
