A Word From The Publisher Happy New Year! Ready or not 2018 is here. Last year was a tumultuous one in many ways. Personally for the Frey family and most assuredly for the rest of the world. I for one am looking forward to the prospects of this new year. I went out to Red Chute Shotgun Sports Club this past Thursday. It actually felt like Winter and after shooting one round of Skeet with Ted Ward with excellent pulling from Gary Sullivan, I was done. Too cold for me! Those of you who live in more frigid areas of the country would call me a wimp. I would simply say that I am averse to freezing my hiney off. Come shoot with us in Louisiana in July and August and we will see who is a wimp. As I was looking for shoots to promote on our cover page for January and February, it appears that I am not the only wimp. Warmer weather will be here soon and the Skeet action really gets started in Dixie in March. I am looking forward to March, but Mardi Gras is fast approaching and will be here in February. No, I am not the party type. I celebrate Mardi Gras shooting quail in South Mississippi with friends every year. It is a lot safer than Mardi Gras parades and all that goes with them. Too each his own. As I write this, I am contemplating spending New Years Eve sitting by the fire at home. I am easily entertained these days. I hope your celebration is safe and fun. From Doug, Debbie and Skeeter at the Red Chute Gazette, we send to you our Best Wishes for a Healthy, Happy and Prosperous New Year. Until we meet again in these pages or on the Skeet field, I am wishing you 3 @ 8. Doug Frey Page 2

NSSA Skeet Shooting and Technology At my invitation, Ran Davis agreed to write an article introducing his company s new software application and solution for Skeet shoot management. It is a timely topic and a much needed solution. Technology is changing faster and faster. It is about time we had some easy to use solutions with excellent support. I have not personally tried myskeet.com, but I look forward to learning more about it and have high hopes that it will be a timesaver. I can tell you that the Louisiana Skeet Shooting Association did use this application to run our 2017 State Championships. It was a trial run and Bea McNamee actual did all of the work. The LSSA Board was looking to Bea s input regarding its use and based on her favorable experience, we will be using it again in 2018. I am not yet sure how much of the system capabilities we will use yet. We may or may not be handling pre-registrations on myskeet.com. That decision has yet to be made. Thank you Ran for sharing with us! Doug Frey What is myskeet.com? We provide a collection of online tools that allow shooters and tournament managers to interact around an NSSA skeet tournament on their own timeframes. The entire suite of tools communicates with each other in real-time allowing for up-to-the-moment score and result updates. Jacob Moore Page 9

NSSA Skeet Shooting and Technology First-Time Free The goal for each shoot manager is to produce the best experience for the shooters possible! Adding the task of learning new software while running a shoot can add stress into the back-office. Because of this, we recommend running a previous shoot in the myskeet application so that you can compare the results and learn the applications without the pressures of running a live tournament. Regardless of your approach, myskeet will waive all of our fees for a club on their first tournament run through our product suite! Introducing the Myskeet Concierge Program One recurring theme that we hear is we have no one at the club that knows how to run the Valerio program. We spend a 100+ hours per month improving the applications; but we realize for a lot of the clubs the time invested is only a long weekend a few times per year. To address this problem we are introducing the Myskeet Concierge Program for 2018. Basically the club can choose what level of service they are looking for but a few of the offerings include: Pre- Shoot (tournament setup and squad management), Post-Shoot (financial audits), or Turnkey (simply let the myskeet team run the entire shoot). For more information, please see: http://portal.myskeet.com/concierge-program/ What was the reason you started myskeet.com? When we started building the application, it really started off to solve 3 main problems: 1) Tournament Deposits management 2) Shoot Results notification 3) Cash, Check, or Charge Tournament Deposits Management every season the guys that I shoot with send out a spreadsheet with all of the possible shoots that anyone on the squad is interested in attending. We have one person on the squad that then collects the deposits and mails in our entry forms to the various shoot managers. The crazy thing is that the shoot manager then has to manually load each shooter into their various shoots and assign any options that each individual shooter is interested in THIS IS A CRAZY AMOUNT OF TIME AND WORK!!!! Page 12

NSSA Skeet Shooting and Technology Shoot Results Notification Everyone relaxes between events in their own way. Some people go back to the hotel, maybe hit a restaurant or check out some local sites. But every skeet shooter even the top shooters that do not hang out at the scoreboard needs to know how the results of each gun are lining up so that they have an idea if they will be involved in any shoot-offs at the end of the day. The answer at most shoots is either hang out and be at the board as the scores are posted, or have someone on the phone that can look-up the information for you. The myskeet shooter portal, online scoreboards, and mobile applications all display the scores in real -time as they are being entered in the back-office. The shooter now has the freedom to do whatever puts them in the best position to be successful with all of the shoot data available from anywhere in the world as long as you can get online. One of the cool new features that we are working on is adding the shoot-offs to the scoreboard, shooter portal, and mobile apps as well The goal is to get the shooter all of the information as easily and quickly as possible so they can concentrate on shooting! Cash, Check, or Charge every tournament seems to have their own rules about this requiring a lot of shooters to carry a lot of cash to the tournament, remember their checkbook, or a few clubs actually accept plastic. Why can I not select the events and options that I want to play for the weekend and pay with my credit card before I leave my house? The registration process then would really just be confirming your selections and classes making the whole process faster! Why do we care as a Shooter? I guess that really comes down to the shooter. I hope that for the cost of $1 per tournament, the shooter feels that they are receiving a lot of value. At the end of the day for the shooter, it s about easy access to the shoot information so that they can put themselves in the best position for a successful weekend! Plus if we can take care of a large part of the individual s record keeping it s just one less thing they need to keep up with. Jacob Moore Page 13

NSSA Skeet Shooting and Technology Why do we care as a Tournament Manager? Let s face it; even skeet shooting is all about customer service! With the number of shoots available to the shooters today, what can you provide that will give you that extra edge? Also, if we can provide the tournament manager a platform that reduces their workload while improving customer service it is a win for everyone! No annual fees! No making sure that you have the latest application patches applied! Also, one area that we continue to invest in is the financial reporting area! At a click of the button, you get several financial reports that provide you a pretty solid P&L for your shoot and all of the details behind those numbers! How is the NSSA involved? The NSSA has been very supportive and really good to work with! They have a lot of IT work going on between the skeet, sporting clays, and the internal ERP (membership, financials, marketing) but somehow they always seem to be able to answer questions and/or provide data. At this time, there is no business or financial association between the myskeet product suite and the NSSA. I like to view us as a complimentary service on top of the NSSA. Why the Cloud? Without getting into the technical reasons there are some excellent advantages to moving all of our applications up to the Microsoft Azure cloud! 1) Automatic data backups. 2) Instant scalability. 3) No more worrying about hard drives failing on the weekend of a large tournament. Jacob Moore Page 14

NSSA Skeet Shooting and Technology What does it cost? This is simple - $1 per shooter per tournament. We actually add that $1 onto the shooters registration and show it on their registration receipt. It does not matter if a shooter is only shooting in a single event or every event over the entire weekend. What s Next? Wow, the list of features seems to constantly be growing! Our current focus for this winter comes down to a handful of major features that we are redoing - squad management and awards/payment assignments. Even though these features exist today, we have been told that they can take more time than they should so we are addressing that! Satellite Tournament Support The Myskeet platform is actually perfect for this! We can easily show all of the scores across any number of clubs participating so that shooters get a real sense for where they stand. With our new functionality of posting shoot-offs on the shooter portal, mobile application, and scoreboards it just works! Training! Training! Training! The new myskeet portal is getting a lot of attention currently with approximately 70 pages of How To instructions for a tournament manager. We also have a series of 2 minute videos being produced to compliment these instructions. Looking a bit farther down the road, we anticipate tighter integration with the NSSA and completing our desktop tournament management application allowing for running a tournament without an internet connection! If you have more questions about the applications, we love to talk with you and as always you can always drop us a line at myskeet@randavis.com with any suggestions! Ran Davis Jacob Moore Page 15

Dining on The Road Long time readers of my Dining on The Road articles know that I love Gumbo. I am blessed to have spent my entire life in Louisiana where I get to experience Gumbo in many restaurants and on many social occasions. These days, you can get Louisiana Gumbo on the menus of restaurants all across the country, especially in the South. You may not know this, but I cook a pretty good Gumbo myself. I am not bragging here. I have competed in a blind taste competition at my church and won first place. In my book, anytime you can beat a bunch of church ladies cooking anything, you have credibility. My best Gumbo efforts have been with chicken, duck, smoked turkey and sausage. I have less experience cooking seafood Gumbo, but I love them all. I often say, I never met a bowl of Gumbo that I didn t like. I must admit that I have liked some much more than others. Gumbo gets its name from Africa. It is actually an African word for okra. Okra was imported from Africa and was often used as a thickener in soups and stews in Louisiana. Gumbo as we know it today has influences from many cultures. Louisiana native Choctaws gave us file powder which is made from dried sassafras leaves. Everyone knows the holy trinity of Louisiana cooking is bell peppers, celery and onions. That is a contribution from Spanish colonists. New Orleans Creole style Gumbo includes tomatoes which are not always found in Cajun style Gumbo. A couple of centuries ago, Louisianans created Gumbo with the proteins available. For some that included crawfish, shrimp, crabs, fish. Others had more access to wild game including boar, ducks, chickens and other critters. Gumbo is truly a multicultural food, unlike many soups we enjoy today. As a lover of Gumbo, one of the items on my personal bucket list was the opportunity to be a judge in a Gumbo Cook-off. Well, in December 2017, I got to check that one off my bucket list. My daughter Kathleen teaches at Benton High School. One of her classes is Louisiana Folk Life. As part of that class, the students studied Louisiana cuisine. I was asked to attend the cook-off and give pointers to the students, who asked questions. Some actually did ask for my opinion. I was actually very impressed with the efforts of these student/chefs. Page 34

Dining on The Road The teams were required to include the holy trinity of vegetables in their roux. They were also required to use chicken, pork sausage and okra. They were provided with the chicken and sausage, but they were allowed to use their own sausage. Beyond that, they were free to use family recipes. The Chef s had to take turns cooking their Gumbos in the school cafeteria. On the second day, it was my task to serve as one of the judges of the results of the 5 teams competing in a blind taste test. I didn t realize that being a judge was going to be such a hard job. These young Chefs really worked hard and they really wanted to win. The judges were asked to rate each submission on five categories. These were: Appearance: has a good gumbo roux color appropriate to the category of gumbo. Aroma: It should smell appetizing. Consistency: It stirs like a good gumbo (thickness of base, etc.) Texture: It has a balanced quantity of ingredients. Flavor: It tastes like a well-balanced gumbo, pleasing to the palate. These students had never cooked Gumbo alone. Some indicated that they had helped their Dads cook before. Considering that this was their very first effort to cook Gumbo on their own and in a competition, I was very impressed with the bowls I was asked to judge. They were all very good! Had I been served any of them in a social setting, I would certainly have asked for seconds. Choosing a winner was not nearly as easy as you might think. In the end, when all of the judges numbers were tallied, the first place winners won because of taste. This team gambled by using deer sausage which was made with jalapenos adding a bit more flavor and heat. This extra bit of spice added enough flavor to set the dish apart, without being too spicy. Page 35

Dining on The Road 2017 Benton High School Louisiana Folk Life Gumbo Teams The second place winners were the only team to go Creole including tomato paste in their Gumbo. The remaining three Gumbo presentations were all very good gumbos with very similar color, texture and flavor profiles. All in all, it was a lot of fun getting to serve as one of the judges and I enjoyed getting to see these high school students excelling at an important new life skill. As far as I am concerned, they are all winners! The experience left me wishing that I had had the opportunity to take this Louisiana Folk Life class when I was in high school. I know these students will remember this class. Hopefully, some will be inspired to continue to learn to cook Louisiana dishes. You just never know, one may some day be a famous Chef. Note to myself: Add Gumbo Judge to your resume. Doug Frey Page 36
