MATCH REPORT FOR REGS v AAC 2013 The REGS v AAC match was played at Liphook Golf Club on Thursday 2 May 2013. In a marked change from last year s monsoon, the morning brought blue skies and sunshine, which only served to emphasise the sheer beauty of the course. One down at the start due to a domestic accident the day before, the team rallied for the morning Greensomes. The breeze was stiff and cold but this did not deter the participants, with two wins before lunch from the pairings of Richard Smith & John Shorney and Mike Brain & Graham Bingham. We sat down at lunch two points apiece. The food was at its usual high standard and matched by the service. Fed and watered, we set out on the afternoon session. The breeze had dropped and the standard of play clearly improved. Won one, lost one, then won four in a row to give an unassailable lead. The last game went to the AAC and the bye brought the final score to REGS 7 pts AAC 5 pts. The day finished with sandwiches, tea and respectful and appreciative comments from both team captains with regard to the quality of the course, facilities and the good nature and enjoyable day that had been had by all. MATCH REPORT FOR REGS v AGC 2013 After suffering with torrential rain and very soggy ground in 2012, I am sure that we all drove towards Liphook this year fearful about the weather, especially as the forecast had been for a cold front passing down across the country overnight. One of the AGC players said we drove down through rain all the way from Cranwell The overnight rain did leave some puddles on the course, but as Liphook drains very quickly, caused no problems. The only aftermath of the cold front was a drop in temperature of 10 degrees. All these words are to avoid getting to the match result! This year we were given a resounding thrashing, 9-3 by the AGC, which is a reversal of last year s result. In the 17 years I have managed this fixture, we have won eight, lost eight and tied one. Liphook was in lovely condition and they have been doing quite a lot of work around the course. With the cold spring, the rhododendrons were not out and the greens a little slower, although no less true, than some years. I cannot report many close matches as a look at the results sheet shows. Despite being soundly beaten, the matches were played in a competitive spirit and we competed as hard as we could. We were beaten by more consistent and better golf on the day. I am sorry to report that the match manager was not able to provide a good role model on the course; especially in the afternoon when my similar handicapped opponent played 7 under his handicap [it provides an excuse of a sort!!] As always the match was played with good comradeship many players on both sides being regulars in this fixture. The club made us welcome, as ever, and we had a wonderful day topped off with the sun pouring in through the clubhouse windows as we enjoyed sandwiches and conversation before our homeward journeys. MATCH REPORT FOR REGS V CHARTERED SURVEYORS 2013 It is with very sad regret that I have to report that Mike Stancombe, the Match Manager for this fixture, passed away recently and so the report below is the last email I received from him before he died...(classified) result yesterday at Hankley was REGS 2 Chartered Surveyors 10 - Saunders only winner and Hon Sec only half in the morning with Bagley and Carroll the only glimmer after lunch - a very good lunch (too good?) and a fabulous day (Hankley was an Open Qualifier two weeks ago).. MATCH REPORT FOR REGS v DEFENCE ACADEMY 2013 Once again the three courses at Frilford Heath GC were in excellent condition and the weather on the day was superb, with warm sunshine and a gentle breeze. The morning round was played on the Blue course and the afternoon round on the Green course. Both courses were punishing if the ball was wayward off the fairway and a good supply of golf balls was needed by all players! It proved to be valuable experience for those playing the course for the first time, with the REGS Autumn Meeting being held on the course later in the year. The Defence Academy Golf Club team included a number of new faces, reflecting the increasingly civilianised make-up of the Golf Club. In the morning 4-Ball-Better-Ball, the first pair of Steve Hutton and Graham Bingham played superbly, with Steve Hutton 4 under the card after 10 holes. The pair eventually won their match 6 and 5. The second pair of Tye Vallely and Richard Sandy played steadily, but not covering each other s mistakes. The opposition, after a wayward start, played increasingly well and although there was less than one hole in it for the first 14 holes, the Defence Academy pair began to gain the advantage and ended winning the match by 4 and 2. The third pair of Ted Ryan and Ian Saunders played steadily in a very close match and just edged the match by 2 and 1. The final pair of Paul Scoble and Richard Smith could not find the consistency they needed against a steady Academy pair and eventually lost their match 4 and 3. This left the overall match all square at lunch, 2 points all. After a very pleasant salad lunch, the revised pairings went out in the afternoon on the Green course playing Greensomes format. Steve Hutton and Tye Vallely in the first pairing came in with a close victory, 1 up. The second pair of Richard Sandy and Graham Bingham had a really close and enjoyable game. However, with 3 holes to play Richard and Graham were 2 down. Both played excellent shots on the 180 yard par three 16 th and were able to win the hole with a 2. On the next 550 yard par five 17 th, both pairs made 5 but the REGS pair had a shot and therefore won the hole to be all square playing the final hole. Both managed a 5 on the final hole to halve their match, which was felt to be the right result. The third pair of Ian Saunders and Richard Smith played well to secure a 3 and 2 victory and the final pair of Paul Scoble and Ted Ryan had another close encounter, winning their match on the 18 th. The end result therefore meant a win for REGS by 5½ points to 2½. The match was played in a good spirit and the staff of Frilford Heath Golf Club looked after us superbly. Players on both sides commented that playing Frilford Heath in the sunshine we enjoyed on the day, in good company with such close matches, was about as perfect as golf could get. MATCH REPORT FOR EAST DEVON GC V REGS 2013 The 19th annual match between REGS and East Devon Golf Club took place on Thursday 11 July 2013. The games were played in glorious sunshine, the nicest weather that anyone could remember for this match. The visiting REGS members were obviously very relaxed and enjoying themselves to such a degree that we succumbed by 8 matches to 3 in the morning singles and 5 to nil in the afternoon 4 balls. We can console ourselves with the knowledge that we were up against a very strong team playing with the advantage of home turf. This match will not be taking place any more. It may be of interest to know that over all the past 19 matches REGS has won 3, halved 5, and lost 11. Well over 50 different REGS members have played in this match, many of them on many occasions. One deserving of special note is Brig Frank Bevan who has played in every match bar one when injury prevented him. A stalwart supporter." MATCH REPORT FOR REGS V RA VETS 2013 The Sapper team assembled at New Zealand Golf Club early on 16 th August after several adjustments to the team to conform to the Gunner numbers. Particularly welcome were Maj Gen Richard Peck and Col Ken Marchant, both of whom had been hors de combat due to injury for a few years. In the end, there were eight players on each side in spite of the Sapper Match Manager s attempts to push numbers to ten or more to accommodate all those who had made themselves available for the match. The RE Vets Team consisted of Maj Gen Peck, Brig Edwards, Col Marchant, Lt Col Brain (MM), Lt Col Bunting, Maj Bingham, Maj Castle and Capt Saunders. The teams set off for the morning foursomes with determination to achieve victory over the old enemy, and after two hard earned points were achieved for each side, came in for lunch all square. After the usual outstanding New Zealand lunch and suitably fortified, the teams formed up again for more foursomes in the afternoon. The match manager s lunchtime pep talk and team reshuffle must have paid off, for the Sappers came home with three matches to the Gunner s one to reclaim the recently donated Ronnie Luckman trophy which commemorates the Sapper/Gunner centenary match. After a challenging day on a beautiful golf course the overall result was a five points to three win for the Sappers. A rather tired but satisfied group of veterans dispersed their various ways resolving to return again and defend their success next year. MATCH REPORT FOR REGS v RAGS 2013 This was the first match to be played at Frilford Heath Golf Club. The match was switched from Hankley as the RAGS were finding Hankley Common too expensive as their match subsidy was significantly smaller than ours. We were due the play both rounds on the Blue Course with foursomes in the morning and singles in the afternoon. However we agreed to play fourball betterball in the afternoon which meant that we could play the Red Course instead. This year the REGS fielded a full side of eight players. Unfortunately the RAGS could only field a side of six in the morning and seven in the afternoon. Additionally one of the RAGS players turned up at Hankley Common and then had to drive all the way to Frilford Heath and so he joined his match at the tenth hole. I won t say which gunner it was, but Mike Tennant was given the Longest Drive award at lunch! The weather was excellent for golf and the courses were presented in excellent condition. We were extremely well looked after in the clubhouse with bacon baps and coffee on arrival, a two course roast lunch with sandwiches after the second round. An excellent day was had by everybody with the REGS side sweeping the board in the afternoon to earn a 6-2 victory. The 5 Aug 14 was booked for next year following the same format as this year. Unfortunately I have just heard that the RAGS have decided to drop this match from their calendar. The winners of the match hold a trophy called the Hankley Fox; is looks as if this trophy will have to be returned to the family of the Gunner who presented it. MATCH REPORT FOR REGS v RAOC 2013 A win 5 3 for the Corps reversed last year s result. Two late Reserve call-ups for Neville Bagley (shoulder problem) and Paul Scoble (virus) were George Carroll and Ali Bartlam. Both the latter are stationed in Gibraltar barracks and came in at 24hrs notice. The morning greensomes went our way with Ali Bartlam and David Quinn winning 2 & 1, Graham Bingham and George Carroll 2 holes up and Mick Wood and Mike Brain taking a half. In the afternoon 4 BBB victories for the pairings of Carroll/Quinn and Wood/Bunting with a half to Bingham/Bartlam completed the 5 points and the match win. Course was in excellent condition and the quick single course lunch ensured a speedy turn-around and a match finish of 1800hrs. Adrain Bunting April 2013

MATCH REPORT FOR REGS v ROYAL CINQUE PORTS GC 2013 A strong Sapper team with five single figure handicappers arrived to take on RCPGC at Deal. The weather was warm and sunny with a light breeze blowing; a perfect day for links golf. It was a clean sweep for the Sappers in the morning, so we could relax a little, enjoy an excellent lunch and look forward to the afternoon matches. Unfortunately, the RCPGC could only field two pairs for the afternoon foursomes, however this did not spoil an excellent day on a super course and played in the very best spirit. MATCH REPORT FOR REGS v REME 2013 The REGS struggled to get a team of eight for the match due to availability and the Match Manager s error with the date. He thought it was Wednesday 8 May. Basic error! However, despite a replacement not being available following an all stations call to REGS members, and WO2 Glyn Hannah sourcing two players at short notice (WO1 Craig Webb and WO2 Gaz Liddle), the REGS fielded a full team on the day and put up a strong showing against a very enthusiastic REME team. The morning fourballs over the Lakes and Parks left REGS 3 to 1 up at lunch time with four winners and a half in the singles over the Woods and Lakes in the afternoon. The final result was therefore REGS 7½ pts to REME 4½ pts. Sandford Springs GC is having an expensive makeover with a hotel also being built by its entry off the A339 which may entail increased prices in 2014. REME GA has asked to forego the evening meal in future and have a more formal lunch with sandwiches/cakes after the afternoon singles so that those travelling afar can get away. Some left before the three course meal this year (which finished at 19:15 hrs) This will be the last REGS v REME GA match that I am able to manage. A provisional date of Wednesday 7 May 2014 has been booked with the Club by the REME GA. MATCH REPORT FOR REGS v RLC 2013 The day started with the cook arriving late, resulting in the bacon rolls being rushed! The morning Greensomes was played within the allocated time. The Hampshire Course has some nice and testing holes but the greens were rough having been tined the weeks previously, but not dress or rolled. Putting was therefore a test of skill and perseverance, but the pairings proved match winners, with the Corps winning two and a half to one and a half. The cook features again, as he was also not prepared for providing a lunch meal, but took the menu and true to form was late providing it, resulting in the tee time being delayed. The afternoon game of singles proved equally daunting, but again the team came up trumps winning by four and a half to three and half with total points for the day being seven to five. The weather was not too kind, but despite the rain and the cold, was far better than had been forecasted. The decision was made after the match to move this particular fixture away from the Hampshire GC; therefore arrangements have now been made for next year's match to be played at Tidworth. REGS v RM Match Report 2013 A comfortable win by 7½ pts to 4½ pts, rather masks the difficulty the Match Manager had in getting out a satisfactory team, with four late withdrawals a few days before the match. Fortunately Capt George Carroll put forward Sgt Andy Mason and Cpl Darren Mathie from Minley, and Lt Col David Quinn and Maj Jack Castle came up from standby. All made a solid contribution on the day, Jack Castle featuring in two wins, ditto David Quinn and Cpl Jack Nicholson, showing on the Liphook course that he so favours, what a quality golfer he is in Greensomes and singles, featuring in two wins. The Royal Marines produced a very good team, with more than half of them with a single figure handicap, but a comprehensive morning of Greensomes in favour of the Corps left the RM with a lot to do in the afternoon singles and they were unable to close the gap. The Seaton trophy remains with the Corps for the fourth successive year. MATCH REPORT FOR REGS v RN 2013 We enjoyed the continued good weather and the course was in excellent condition. In the past it has been difficult to field a team of ten, however, this year we had a full complement, despite a last minute replacement. The morning Greensomes was a fairly straightforward affair for the Sappers, with three wins and two matches halved. It was an enjoyable lunch, made even more so with a three-point lead. In the afternoon Foursomes, only one match was lost: two were won handsomely, and two matches were drawn. The drawn matches showed some real fighting spirit. In one of these matches, our players, Nev Bagley and John Shorney, came in with a half from four down with six to play. In the other match, Mick Wood and Graham Bingham squeezed a half from being down dormy three. Our records go back to 1984: won 14, lost 11 with 5 matches halved. We have, however, had some recent successes - since 2008: won 4, lost 1 and halved 2. MATCH REPORT FOR REGS V RSIGS 2013 We welcomed a few new faces to the match this year with Sgt Andy Mason and LCpl Dale Jones representing the REGS for the first time. The pre match team talk, post bacon roll, was on the lines that I had a 100% record in that we won last year! As ever, the team selection had proved to be somewhat of a challenge, nevertheless we put out an average handicap team of 9 compared to last year s average of 11. All the signs were good therefore, for a repeat of last year s convincing victory. Once again the golf course was superb and a pleasure to play. So much so that we sat down for lunch in a commanding 4-0 lead after the morning Greensomes. The confidence over lunch was apparent and the possible cause of what was to come could have been the few extra drinks with the fantastic meal as the team slipped into premature celebration. The afternoon singles proved to be a very worrying time. Having played second out in the singles and losing my game, I sat on the terrace in the knowledge that we only had half a point from the first four pairings. Jack Nicholson scraping a good half against Ian Stallard, a PGA pro playing for the Sigs. (for those of you not following this, that meant we were now 4 to 3 ½). The next match in, Dale Jones giving 8 shots to his opponent and yes you guessed it, he lost putting the Sigs in front by half a point. Richard Sandy snuck a win on the last hole to swing it back in our favour and then John Shorney lost 2 and 1. However my old mate and ever faithful stand in Steve Tusz, snatched the final point to scrape a win 6 ½ to 5 ½. My thanks go to all the team for turning up and playing well enough to maintain my 100% record. The Line Runners were graceful in defeat and I thank them for turning up again and losing. The fixture for next year is booked for the 12 th of August 2014. Neil Hallam Jones 14 August 2013 Match Manager.
