Selke Trophy as the NHL s top defensive forward, John Madden, 44, was named head coach of the Cleveland Monsters by the Columbus Blue Jackets on August 29, 2016 following the departure of Monsters head coach Jared Bednar, who was hired in mid-august as head coach of the NHL s Colorado Avalanche. Madden registered 165 goals, 340 points, 219 penalty minutes and a +20 rating in 898 career NHL appearances for the New Jersey Devils, Chicago Blackhawks, Minnesota Wild and Florida Panthers spanning 13 seasons from 1998 to 2012. Madden helped the Devils claim the Stanley Cup in 2000 and 2003 before again hoisting hockey s Holy Grail in 2010 with Chicago. A member of the Monsters 2016 Calder Cup Championship team, McCarthy logged 302 career NHL appearances as a defenseman for the Blackhawks, Vancouver Canucks and Atlanta Thrashers during a professional playing career that spanned 16 seasons from 2000-2016 and also featured stops in the AHL, KHL and ECHL, along with stints in the top Finnish and Swiss leagues. Chris Clark, Development Coach Originally selected by the Calgary Flames in the third round (77th overall) of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft, South Windsor, CT native Chris Clark is entering his sixth season as Columbus Blue Jackets Development Coach. A veteran of 607 NHL games spanning parts of 11 seasons from 1999-2011 with the Calgary Flames, Washington Capitals and Columbus, Clark served as Washington s captain four times, helped Calgary earn a berth in the 2004 Stanley Cup Finals, won the AHL s Calder Cup with the Saint John Flames in 2001 and competed collegiately at Clarkson University from 1994-98. LATEST TRANSACTIONS NEW FACE: Cleveland s NHL affiliate, the Columbus Blue Jackets, assigned 21-year-old C Kevin Stenlund, a 6 4, 210 lb., right-handed native of Huddinge, Sweden, to the Monsters last Friday from HV71 of the SHL. Columbus second-round pick (58th overall) in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, Stenlund posted 7-15-22 in 43 appearances for HV71 this season. NEWER FACES: Cleveland signed F Spencer Naas to an amateur tryout contract (ATO) on Thursday. In 36 appearances for the University of Connecticut this season in Nass senior campaign, Naas posted 12-12-24 with 22 penalty minutes and a +7 rating.
