San Diego Gulls: Media Notes LAST SAN DIEGO GULLS GAME DECEMBER 5, 2017 SAN DIEGO 5 @ MILWAUKEE 2 Kalle Kossila recorded a career-high three points (1-2=3) as the Gulls won consecutive games on the road for the second time this season after a 5-2 victory over the Milwaukee Admirals. Kossila also matched a career and season high with a +3 rating. Julius Nattinen (1-1=2) and Eric Fehr (1-1=2) each earned multi-point games in the win, with Nattinen recording his second multi-point effort in three games and Fehr earning his first multi-point effort for the Gulls. Sam Carrick and Keaton Thompson also scored for San Diego. Spencer Abbott earned his team-leading 14th assist of the season and Andy Welinski tallied his ninth power play assists and 11th overall. Reto Berra stopped 32-of-34 shots to pick up his second consecutive win and improve to 3-2-0 on the season. Berra has made 30-or-more saves in four of his five appearances this season. SAN DIEGO NOTES TONIGHT S GAME: The San Diego Gulls (9-10-1-0, 19 pts.,.475 win %) play the penultimate game of a season-long five-game road trip tonight against the Chicago Wolves at Allstate Arena (5 p.m., ESPN 1700-AM) in the first-ever meeting between the clubs. Tonight marks the second of three consecutive games in the Midwest, with the road trip concluding in Iowa on Saturday, Dec. 9 (5 p.m. PT). San Diego has won seven consecutive games against Central Division opponents, and all-time have a 11-5-1-0 vs. Central Division opponents ( 2-2 vs. Charlotte, 1-1 vs. Grand Rapids, 2-0 vs. Iowa, 2-1-1 vs. Manitoba, 2-1 vs. Milwaukee, 2-0 vs. Rockford), including a 5-3-1 record on the road and 6-2-0 mark at home. The Gulls have earned points in 16 of their last 17 road games (14-1-2-0) outside the state of California dating back to Dec. 29, 2016 @ Texas (last loss: 5-4 loss @ Manitoba on Oct. 29, 2016). The Gulls lone regulation loss in the past 17 road games away from their home state came in their most recent trip on Nov. 22 at Tucson, a span of 389 days. The Gulls and Wolves will wrap up their two-game season set on Wednesday, Jan. 10 at Valley View Casino Center (7 p.m. PT). POWER SURGE: The Gulls 24.0% mark on the man advantage ranks first in the AHL, with the 25 power play tallies leading the league. San Diego is also 12-of-50 at home, which ranks third in the AHL. San Diego s 24.1% mark on the road ranks fifth among AHL clubs with the 13 goals second among league leaders. San Diego scored a power play goal in each of the first eight games to begin the season from Oct. 7-28 to set a new franchise record of consecutive games with a power play goal. The record surpassed the previous mark of six set from Mar. 30-Apr. 9, 2016 in the team s inaugural season. HOME SWEET HOME: Since the beginning of 2016-17, San Diego has posted a 27-15-1-1 record at Valley View Casino Center. The Gulls have outscored opponents by a 152-123 margin on home ice in that span. Additionally, San Diego has won 13 of its last 21 games at Valley View Casino Center and boasts a 19-9-0 record on home ice the past 28 regular season games.

ROAD WARRIORS: San Diego has earned standings points in 20 of the last 30 road games (18-10-2-0) and 26 of the last 35 contests away from home (22-10-2-1) dating back to last season. The Gulls have earned points in 16 of their last 17 road games (14-1-2-0) outside the state of California dating back to Dec. 29, 2016 @ Texas (last loss: 5-4 loss @ Manitoba on Oct. 29, 2016). The Gulls lone regulation loss in the past 17 road games away from their home state came in their most recent trip on Nov. 22 at Tucson, a span of 389 days. It also marked a span of 669 days where the Gulls earned a point in a road contest outside of California in the U.S. (Jan. 23, 2016 at Texas (6-3 loss) to Nov. 22, 2017 at Tucson). LEADING SITUATIONS: The Gulls have compiled a 6-0-1-0 record when scoring first this season and a 34-2-3-1 mark when scoring the game s first goal since the beginning of the 2016-17. The past two seasons when leading after the first period, the Gulls have posted a 32-0-1-0 record (4-0-0-0 this season). DUCK CALLS: Tonight s Gulls roster includes 17 NHL draft selections, including nine by the Anaheim Ducks. Seven picks were in the first two rounds by NHL clubs. The Gulls roster of top-round selections includes Eric Fehr (18th overall by WSH in 2003), Jacob Larsson (27th overall by ANA in 2015), Jeff Schultz (27th overall by WSH in 2004), Leland Irving (26th overall by CGY in 2006), Nic Kerdiles (second round, 36th overall in 2012), Marcus Pettersson (38th overall by ANA in 2014) and Julius Nattinen (59th overall by ANA in 2015). GULLS GRADS: Nine players currently on the Anaheim Ducks roster have also appeared in a game with the Gulls. The eight skaters combined (Ondrej Kase, Mike Liambas, Jaycob Megna, Brandon Montour, Nick Ritchie, Kevin Roy and Chris Wagner) have earned 21-28=49 points for the Ducks this season. Montour Ranks tied for third among NHL defensemen in goals (6), and leads Anaheim defensemen in points (6-8=14), and ranks tied for second on the Ducks in goals and leads in GWG (3). John Gibson became the first Ducks goaltender to record three straight games with at least 40 saves since Guy Hebert completed the feat from Jan. 28 to Feb. 4, 1998 (Jan 28 vs. CGY 40-of-45; Feb. 1 vs. CHI 47-of-50; Feb. 4 vs. NYR 41-of-43), and he owns a 4-1-0 record when making 40 saves or more this season. On Oct. 13, San Diego sold out its first game of 2017-18 (12,920) for their home opener, the fifth game since the return of hockey in 2015 and followed up with the sixth sellout in club history Nov. 10. In 2016-17, San Diego saw more than 301,000 fans watch Gulls hockey at Valley View Casino Center throughout the club s 34 regular season home games, including three sellouts and 11 games of 10,000 or more fans. The Gulls led the Pacific Division and ranked third in the AHL with an average attendance of 8,876 in the 34 contests behind only Hershey and Cleveland. Named to his current post on June 26, 2015, Eakins led the Gulls to a 43-20-3-2 record in 2016-17, earning second place in the Pacific Division and third in the AHL. In his two previous seasons behind the bench, Eakins has led the Gulls to an 82-43-7-4 record (.645 win %) in 136 games. Under Eakins, San Diego has advanced to the Pacific Division Finals in each of the club s first two seasons, leading the club to a 3-2 series win over Ontario in in the opening round of the 2017 Calder Cup Playoffs before falling in the Division Final to San Jose (five games). In 2016, Eakins guided San Diego to the club s first postseason series victory with a 3-1 series win in the First Round over Texas before being eliminated in the Division Finals by Ontario (five games). On Nov. 12, 2016, Eakins earned his 200th career AHL win as the Gulls defeated the Manitoba Moose, 6-3, while he also appeared in his 400th game behind an AHL bench on Dec. 11, 2016 at San Jose. The Dade City, Fla. native previously served as Head Coach of the NHL s Edmonton Oilers from 2013-14 (113 games) after spending eight years in the Toronto Maple Leafs organization. Eakins was Head Coach of the Toronto Marlies (AHL) from 2009-13, leading the team to a 157-114-41 record in 312 games. The Marlies finished atop the North Division during Eakins final two seasons behind the bench winning four of six playoff series. While with the Marlies, Eakins was named as one of two head coaches representing the Western Conference for the AHL All-Star Games for both the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons. During the 2011-12 campaign, Eakins led the Marlies to a division-best 44-24-8 record and an appearance in the Calder Cup Final. Eakins has a career 196-137-45-2 record as Head Coach in the AHL. Selected by Washington in the 10th round (208th overall) of the 1985 NHL Draft, Eakins appeared in 120 career NHL games with the Winnipeg Jets, Florida Panthers, St. Louis Blues, Phoenix Coyotes, New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Islanders and Calgary Flames. Eakins also played in the AHL and International Hockey League (IHL) during his professional career, winning both the Calder Cup (2002) and Turner Cup (2000). His final professional season was with the Manitoba Moose (AHL) before retiring on May 26, 2004. ASSISTANT COACH: Marty Wilford Marty Wilford is in his third season as Assistant Coach with the San Diego Gulls and seventh season in the Anaheim organization. Wilford helped the Gulls to a 43-20-3-2 record last season, earning second place in the Pacific Division and third in the AHL. In two seasons in San Diego, Wilford has helped lead the Gulls to an 82-43-7-4 record, while helping the club advance to the Pacific Division Finals in both seasons. Wilford helped guide Anaheim s AHL affiliate to a 104-99-25 record from 2012-15 in Norfolk, including a win over topseeded Manchester in the first round of the 2014 Calder Cup Playoffs. Wilford made his professional coaching debut in 2011-12 with Anaheim s then-ahl affiliate in Syracuse, which went 37-29-10 and earned a berth in the 2012 Calder Cup Playoffs. The Peterborough, Ontario native retired from professional hockey in 2010-11 following four years playing overseas in Germany and Italy. Originally selected by Chicago in the sixth round (149th overall) of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft, Wilford collected 47-228=275 points with 573 PIM as a defenseman in 539 career AHL games from 2000-07. He is Norfolk s alltime leading scorer among defensemen with 32-141=173 points in 318 games from 2000-05. Wilford began his professional career in the International Hockey League, scoring 3-29=32 points in 186 games between 1997-00. He spent the last four seasons in Europe with Hamburg and Iserlong (Germany), and Fassa HC (Italy), notching 19-121=140 points in 146 contests. ASSISTANT COACH: Brett Ferguson Brett Ferguson is in his third season with the San Diego Gulls, and first as Assistant Coach after spending the two previous seasons as Video Coach with the club. He enters his eighth season as a coach for the Anaheim Ducks AHL affiliate having previously served as Video Coach with the Norfolk Admirals (2012-15) and the Syracuse Crunch (2010-12). Ferguson has helped lead the Gulls to back-to-back Calder Cup Playoff appearances, advancing to the Pacific Division Final in each of the two seasons. In two seasons with the Gulls, San Diego has recorded an 82-43-7-4 record and earned postseason series victories in the first round over Texas in 2016 (four games) and Ontario in 2017 (five games). Prior to joining the Ducks organization, Ferguson was an assistant coach with the Des Moines Buccaneers of the United States Hockey League (USHL). Born in Sioux City, Iowa and raised in West Des Moines, Ferguson graduated from the University of South Carolina at Aiken in 2009 with a bachelor s degree in history. He was a three-time Iowa High School State champion as a member of the Des Moines Capitals. GOALTENDING COACH: J.F. Labbe J.F. Labbe is in his second season as goaltending coach for the San Diego Gulls. Labbe previously served as goaltending coach for the Sherbrooke Phoenix of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) in 2015-16. A native of Sherbrooke, Quebec, Labbe posted a 3-6-0 record with a 3.44 GAA and.889 SV% in 15 career NHL games with the New York Rangers and Columbus Blue Jackets from 1999-03. He also played 10 seasons in the AHL from 1993-03, going 202-151-52 with a 2.77 GAA and.913 SV% in 420 career games. Labbe ranks 12th all-time in wins as well as eighth in shutouts (27). He is also fourth all-time in postseason contests by a goaltender (82), and his 46 playoff wins and seven playoff shutouts are both tied for second-most in AHL history. In 2016, Labbe was inducted into the American Hockey League Hall of Fame. Labbe won the Calder Cup with Hershey in 1996-97 and Hartford in 1999-00, and was inducted into the AHL s Hall of Fame in Feb. 2016.
