2,000 Matt Popes running Around Imagine you are at work tomorrow, minding your own business, earning a paycheck, working hard. Now imagine that when you showed up at work thousands of people were there to watch your every movement watching you punch the clock, watching you log onto your computer, watching you hit up the water cooler for a tasty, refreshing drink. Now imagine that out of all those people there to watch you work, there are 2,000 kids on hand wearing a shirt with your name on it. That s what Condors F Matt Pope is feeling like right now. Being a first year player and having some fans here rooting for you, and getting chosen to go on the jersey is pretty cool, says Pope, who has made a splash in Condorstown during his rookie season. And yes, he has fans here. In fact, Pope has had lots of fans in Bakersfield since Opening Weekend when he racked up 2g-2a while dishing out a couple big hits in just his second pro game. Pope has won a couple of fan polls already this season on BakersfieldCondors.com, including a Kern Trophies Condor of the Month award and a couple others, such as tonight s youth replica jersey giveaway. The first jersey I ever got was a Canucks jersey, the really ugly ones the skate ones, says Pope, recalling his youth growing up in the Vancouver area. It was a #10 Pavel Bure jersey. He was awesome; I loved watching him play. And although The Russian Rocket isn t the reason Pope wears 10 today (his father wore it when he played junior hockey), it s hard to miss the irony that Pope s #10 is now going to be many Bakersfield kids first jersey, just as that #10 was Pope s. And while Bure was a star on the International stage, it s Pope and his teammates that are stars on the smaller Bakersfield stage. When you go around town some places people know who you are. And especially at the games, when I was walking around the concourse when I was out of the lineup injured, I had kids coming up to me and talking to me and asking for my autograph. And then their parents would tell me that I was their kid s favorite player and they were really looking forward to Matt Pope Jersey night. Plenty of kids look forward to youth jersey night here in Condorstown. Because the hockey jersey is a prized possession. And just for tonight, while he s on the clock, Matt can enjoy how cool it is that there will be 2,000 Matt Popes running around the arena.
