Muncie IN Rantoul IL 2016 90 years July 27 Share the Nats with friends back home! www.modelaircraft.org/natsnews Free Flight Soaring Mark Freeland, Keego Harbor MI, with a new electric Twister, which will be a future kit.

FREE FLIGHT Today I met the second Hank who had pursued me to come to the Free Flight Nats, Hank Nystrom, the timer guy. Besides coming to the Nats, Hank convinced me to give E-36 a try. So far, it has been a challenge that I am enjoying. When practicing Tuesday evening, my only propeller assembly flew off the model. Hopefully I can find one for the competition on Wednesday. This was the first time I had seen the very powerful F1C models that go absolutely straight up and do a bunt to level off on top. Some fold the wings out or vary the airfoil by moving the trailing edge. I was told that using gear drive reduction had been abandoned in favor of the direct drive. Dick Matthes explained his flapper model and showed me a device that he connected to the plane to program its functions. I also spent time talking with people who were flying with somewhat slower and more quiet power, mainly Jetex and rubber power. Bob Ederstein was somewhat frustrated with his Jetex model that had not flown in a long time. I learned that working with Jetex motors can be difficult and the cases get very hot. Besides pictures, I have been taking lots of videos that I will Text and photos by Bill Kuhl most likely upload to Youtube after the Nats. I noticed a woman waiting to launch a rubber model and wanted to talk to her after the flight. By mistake, I talked to two other women who wanted to let me know that her husband had short fused the Mulvihill model on one flight, bringing it down before it could max. In the afternoon, it was announced that a storm was approaching and we were advised to take cover. Luckily, the storm went around us. This gave me an opportunity to visit the AMA National Model Aviation Museum. I was really impressed; it was almost like traveling back in time to see the old models and supplies. When we came out of the museum it wasn t raining, so we went to watch the Rise-Off-Water (ROW) competition. One of the first models that I saw successfully fly off of the shallow water was a rubber model built by John Diebolt. It easily took off and flew for more than a minute. He said that it usually beats the gas models. In watching the gas models take off from the water, most of the time, the takeoffs were smooth, but many times not. Sometimes they resulted in a crash just outside of the pond. Doug Marsh, Granger IN, with his Jay s Bird OS.19 with RDT. Dick Matthes programming his F1C flapper model. Hank Nystrom, the timer guy. Bob Edelstein s EZ Jet Jetex 150 model that was last flown at the 1969 Nats. John Diebolt in ROW rubber. Lee Hines.

Rudy Kluber competes in ROW.
