THE ROAD TO SIOUX FALLS... 2017-18 SEASON-IN-REVIEW February 15, 2017: In a 22-point blowout loss at IU South Bend, Governors State was left with just four players on the court in the closing seconds. Seven players dressed for the game and three fouled out. The loss dropped GSU to 10-19 on the season. Fast forward a year later to February 14, 2018: The Jaguars have 16 players available in an 11-point win over IU South Bend, improving to 21-8 overall. Changing the culture. It s a mantra GSU Head Coach Tony Bates has preached all season. During the offseason, the coaching staff was relentless in its recruiting, bringing in nine new players. And over the course of a year, GSU went from 11th in the league standings to conference champions. It s a credit to the work our players and coaches put in over the summer, said Bates. You have someone like Jalen Miller who was all-league honorable mention last year but felt like he still had something to prove. Miller certainly did that. It was a strange paradox for the team captain: the less he was asked to do, the more he accomplished. Miller did a lot of heavy lifting in terms of scoring and rebounding last year. In 2017-18, he is part of a stronger, more balanced team. Shooting 51.6 percent from the floor and averaging 15.5 points a game, Miller was named Player of the Year in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC). With three new starters in the lineup, it became just a mattter of time before the team started to jell. That process began on November 18 when GSU came away with a 15-point win at Olivet Nazarene. That was followed three days later by a 24-point blowout at St. Francis. In the course of one week GSU defeated two traditional conference powerhouses on the road. A week later, the team suffered a brief setback. Traveling to the Waldorf Classic over Thanksgiving, GSU dropped a close contest to the host Warriors and lost by 40 points to Division I Graceland, a team it had beaten a month earlier at the Jaguars Tip-Off Classic. A third into the season and GSU was playing.500 basketball, standing 5-5 overall. From that point, Tony Bates team went 20-3 (.870) the rest of the season, sporting a 16-1 record during the new year. It became apparent early on that guard Robbie Brooks, a transfer from Joliet JC, was going to be a key contributor. He scored 25 points on the road against 15thranked Taylor and became just the third GSU player to tally 500 points in a season, leading the team with a 16.1 average. A slasher with great leaping ability, Brooks received All-CCAC Honorable Mention honors and ranks eighth among CCAC players in overall scoring. Fellow guard Shane Maple may be GSU s most underrated player, despite being an All-CCAC Second Team pick. For most of the season Maple flew under the radar, forgoing gaudy stats in favor of ball distribution to GSU s many offensive weapons. Over the final month of the season, Maple became more assertive offensively, producing four 20-point efforts, including a high of 27, while becoming a threat from three-point land, sticking 49.2 percent of his shots (sixth-best in the NAIA). Best point guard in the league, hands down, said Bates. Governors State captured the CCAC season championship in just its second year in the league. GSU jumped to a 6-0 start before stumbling at Cardinal Stitch, then rattled off 10 more conference wins, clinching the league crown (and automatic berth) on February 7 a month before the NAIA National Tournament was slated to begin. Along the way GSU defeated 18th-ranked Trinity International by 21 points, pulled out a hard-fought 69-67 road win at Calumet St. Joseph and defeated defending league champs Robert Morris, 102-92. The Jaguars won a school-record 11 straight games from Jan. 3-Feb. 7. Governors State was nearly unbeatable at home, going 18-2. The team closed with 12-straight home victories, going undefeated (13-0) against CCAC opposition. The remarkable run at the Athletics & Recreation Center was capped by three wins in the conference tournament, paving the way for the CCAC Double. GSU posted seven league wins by 20-ormore points and won its 18 CCAC games by an average margin of 15.8 points. GSU built large leads behind solid perimeter shooting. Sophomore Justin Siorek developed into a long-range threat, knocking down a school-record 82 three-pointers while taking over the career mark (126) as well. Coming off the bench, guards Travis McBride and Sterling Fields provided offensive support and stellar defense. In the low post, GSU became bigger and more physical with the addition of 6-7 power forward David Anderson, the team s leading rebounder (7.7 rpg) and third-leading scorer (12.5 ppg). Freshman 6-7 center Quincy Dillard improved steadily over the season, earning spot starts. Not much was expected from us at the start of the season, stated Bates, who was named CCAC Co-Coach of the Year. But we now have a opportunity to represent GSU on a national stage and look forward to the challenge ahead.
