Head coach Sharon Versyp enters her eighth season at the helm, chasing career win No. 300, while having 156 wins with the Boilermakers. The Boiermakers enter the season ranked 23rd in the USA Today/ Coaches Poll and have been ranked in at least one of the two national polls for 66 of their last 69 games. With three returning starters (Houser, Moses and Williams) and nine returning letterwinners, the Boilermakers return 52.3% of their scoring (1,206 points), 69.5% of their assists (378) and 67.4% of their steals (188). However they return just 37.1% of last year s rebounding (413) and 18.1% of their blocked shots (18). Senior Courtney Moses led the Boilermakers in scoring a team-high 14 times last season, while classmate KK Houser accomplished the feat seven times. Moses led the Big Ten Conference last season with a 92.6% free throw percentage, converting 75-of-81 at the line. She is currently the Boilermakers all-time leader in the category, making 90.0% (215-239). Moses is ranked sixth all-time at Purdue with 160 career three-point field goals, looking to become just the third player in school history with 200 for her career. Houser is 90 points shy of becoming the 28th player in school history to score 1,000 points. She s also closing in on becoming the 11th player in school history to dish out 400 career assists (340), and 12th player with 200 career steals (188). Houser has scored in double figures in 11 straight games, carrying the active streak into 2013-14. Juniors Torrie Thornton and Whitney Bays return to action after missing the 2012-13 campaign. Thornton missed the year with injury, while Bays sat out due to NCAA transfer rules after coming from the University of Maryland. 2012-13 Statistical Comparison Purdue Boilermakers Purdue Category Clarke 25-9 Record 6-22 67.9 Per Game 59.8 61.4 Allowed 68.2 +6.5 Point Differential -8.4.435 FG%.371.359 3FG%.299.768 FT%.754.380 Opponent FG%.419.306 Opponent 3FG%.333.720 Opponent FT%.701 37.6 Rebound Average 34.2 12.1 Offensive Rebound Average 11.0 25.5 Defensive Rebound Average 24.2 33.9 Opponent Rebound Average 37.6 +3.7 Rebound Margin -3.4 15.3 Fouls Per Game 15.2 16.0 Per Game 12.7 17.5 Turnovers Per Game 19.1 8.2 Per Game 8.3 3.7 Blocks Per Game 1.4 2013-14 Roster Returning Statistics Pos. Next Up The Boilermakers officially open their season in one week, hosting Ball State on Sunday, Nov. 10, in Mackey Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. (ET) and the game will be webcast live on the Big Ten Digital Network. Live stats and radio will also be available via PurdueSports.com, in addition to the local radio broadcast on 95.3 WBPE (BOB-FM). First Game Success Purdue is 31-7 all-time in their first games of the season. Notable November The Boilermakers are 87-25 all-time in the month of November. Easy Money Courtney Moses enters 2013-14 as Purdue s all-time leading free throw shooter and one of the best-ever in NCAA history. She s connected on 90.0% of her career attempts (215-239) including a single-season Boilermaker record 92.6% (75-81) in 2012-13. More Moses Moses holds each of the class records at Purdue for three-point makes and three-point attempts in a game, including her NCAA Tournament record nine makes against South Dakota State in 2012. In order to catch Brittany Rayburn for the Boilermakers senior record, she ll chase the NCAA single-game record of 12, which Rayburn totaled on 16 attempts at Minnesota in 2012. Giving and Taking Away KK Houser is already one of nine players in Purdue history, along with head coach Sharon Versyp, to surpass 300 assists and 180 steals in her career, looking to join even more elite company this season. Houser ranks 12th in school history with 340 career assists and sits 13th on the career steals list with 188. She remains 78 assists and just six steals shy of Versyp on the two lists. Others on this elite list are Stephanie White (578/277), Katie Douglas (526/327), Lisa Jahner (517/219), FahKara Malone (513/351), Erika Valek (479/262), Kelly Komara (402/297) and Katie Gearlds (399/181). Doubling Up Moses and Houser have respectively hit double figures 59 and 48 times in their careers, good for 20th and 29th on the Purdue record list. Moses accomplished the feat 24 times last season, while Houser pulled it off 22 times, including an active streak of 11 straight games. See the Three, Be the Three Nearly 40% of the Boilermakers returning made field goals from 2012-13 came from behind the three-point line, including 149 trifectas from Courtney Moses, KK Houser and April Wilson. Moses and Houser s respective marks of 63 and 57 threes were good for fourth and ninth on Purdue s single-season record list, while Wilson s 39.7% from behind the arc is 15th best on the single-season list and No. 2 all-time by a Boilermaker freshman. Veteran Backcourt The Boilermakers have a wealth of experience in their 2013-14 backcourt, headlined by KK Houser, Courtney Moses and Dee Dee Williams. The trio has a combined 302 games played in their collegiate careers, with 201 combined starts and 7,580 minutes played. Moses and Houser are the two returning leading scores for the Boilermakers, averaging 13.3 and 11.3 points per game, respectively. New Faces Inside There will be several new faces in the paint for the Old Gold and Black as more than 90% of last year s post minutes are no longer with the team. Liza Clemons played more interior minutes than any of the returning Boilermakers with just 143, while Camille Redmon and Joslyn Massey played 57 and 37 minutes, respectively. Whitney Bays and Torrie Thornton will be in the mix as well after sitting out last season. Welcome to Purdue The Boilermaker faithful will see three new players in the Old Gold and Black this season in junior forward Whitney Bays and freshmen guards Ashley Morrissette and Bridget Perry. All three are expected to make an immediate impact to the program and bring a distinguished list of accomplishments and credentials to the table. Welcome Back Redshirt sophomore forward Torrie Thornton returns to action this season after sitting out 2012-13. Thornton underwent patella tendon debridement surgery to correct severe tendonitis in both knees in May 2012. Preseason Honors Moses was also named second team allconference by College Sports Madness, while Houser was a third-team pick. By The Numbers - One national championship (1999) - Three Final Fours (1994, 1999, 2001) - Seven Big Ten championships - Seven First Team All-Americans - Eight NCAA Elite Eight appearances - Nine Big Ten Tournament titles (B1G Record) - 12 WNBA Draft selections - 12 NCAA Sweet 16 appearances - 23 NCAA Tournament appearances - 27 1,000-point scorers Back-To-Back Big Ten Tournament Champions The Boilermakers have won the last two Big Ten Tournament titles, extending their conference record to nine tournament championships and four in the last seven seasons under Sharon Versyp. After using a double-overtime 74-70 victory to defeat Nebraska for the 2012 conference tournament crown, the Boilermakers downed Wisconsin, the Cornhuskers and Michigan State for the 2013 Big Ten Tournament Championship, winning each game by a minimum of 12 points. In the title game, Purdue hit its first eight shots en route to a 20-8 lead over the Spartans and held them to just 14 first-half points. Purdue kept Michigan State at bay in the second half, allowing them to come no closer than nine points in the 62-47 victory. Purdue s back-to-back championships make them the first to repeat since Ohio State won in 2010 and 2011. The Buckeyes have the secondmost conference tournament championships with four. Using Our Heads Head coach Sharon Versyp stresses academic achievement. The Boilermakers earned the Provost s Award this spring, being recognized for the most improved cumulative GPA. Two former players are in medical school. Lauren Mioton, a Rhodes Scholar finalist, is in medical school at Vanderbilt, while Chelsea Jones is a med student at Arkansas. Brittany Rayburn is in Purdue s School of Veterinary Medicine. Recently, Rayburn was awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, the third Boilermaker to be so honored. Natasha Bogdanova is in the MBA program at Purdue s Krannert School of Management. Home Court Advantage Purdue fans loyal support makes Mackey Arena a tough place to play and has put the Boilermakers in the top 10 in national attendance for 18-straight seasons. Purdue finished seventh in attendance last year, averaging 8,515 fans per game, and went 10-3 on their home court. Sharon Versyp, a former Boilermaker point guard, has led Purdue to four Big Ten Tournament championships and two NCAA Tournament Elite Eight appearances in her seven seasons as the head coach at her alma mater. At Purdue, she has averaged 23 wins per season, including a 25-9 record in the postseason. Versyp signed a contract extension that will secure her presence on the Boilermaker sidelines through the 2016-17 season. Versyp s impact on basketball in the Hoosier state was recognized on April 24, 2010, when she was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in her first year of eligibility, an honor that includes Larry Bird and John Wooden. The Mishawaka, Ind., native is known for her prowess in team defense, game preparation, individual player development and team building. Recruiting is a key to success and Versyp and her staff have proven that they can attract elite players to Purdue. Versyp s first six signing classes were ranked in the top 15, and the most recent class of studentathletes earned a No. 23 ranking. Equally impressive to the on-court accolades are the team s academic achievements under Versyp s guidance. For three-straight years, the Boilermakers earned a team GPA of 3.10 or better and last season, Brittany Rayburn earned Academic All- America accolades. Two players in the Versyp era are in medical school - Lauren Mioton is at Vanderbilt and Chelsea Jones is at Arkansas, while Rayburn is in her second year in Purdue s School of Veterinary Medicine. The Boilermakers have posted back-to-back Big Ten Tournament Championships in 2012 and 2013, increasing their conference-best mark to nine conference tournament titles. Purdue tied for third in the Big Ten in the regular season and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament before being ousted by red-hot NCAA Runners-up Louisville on the Cardinals home floor and finishing the season 25-9 for the second straight year. Four Boilermakers collected Big Ten postseason honors as Drey Mingo, Sam Ostarello, Courtney Moses and KK Houser received all-conference nods, while Mingo was named the Big Ten Tournament Most Outstanding Player and Moses and Houser joined her on the alltournament team. Versyp returned to her alma mater as Purdue s eighth head coach on April 10, 2006. As a player Versyp, a former Boilermaker point guard, led her teams to three consecutive winning seasons when the program had enjoyed only one winning campaign in the previous 10 years. HEAD COACH SHARON VERSYP - EIGHTH YEAR AT PURDUE - SCHOOL RECORD: 161-79 (77-41 BIG TEN) CAREER RECORD: 278-144 (86-48) In her first year as head coach at Purdue, Versyp compiled a 31-6 record that included a secondplace finish in the Big Ten regular season, a Big Ten Tournament title and an appearance in the NCAA Elite Eight. Versyp was named the 2007 WBCA Region VI Coach of the Year. Versyp s win percentage in 2006-07 of 83.8 percent (31-6) was tops for a first-year coach. The 31 wins equals the second-most in school history and Versyp is the only first-year head coach to achieve a 30-win record. Versyp was the head coach at Indiana prior to Purdue, where she led her team to a 19-14 season, 9-7 in the Big Ten and the quarterfinals of the postseason WNIT. The nine-game improvement was the second largest turn-around in school history for a first-year head coach. Prior to her stint with the Hoosiers, Versyp was the head coach at Maine for five seasons where she amassed a 98-51 record, including a 67-19 America East Conference record. Versyp s teams won three straight America East regular season championships (2003, 2004, 2005) and in 2004 also won the America East Tournament title earning an NCAA Tournament berth.
