DROPPED OUT: No. 15 Seattle Pacific, No. 23 Tusculum, No. 25 Francis Marion. Junior Heather Pohl leads the Mavs in scoring with 14.1 points per game. SCOUTING THE COMPETITION: NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE BEARCATS Northwest Missouri State returns all five of its starters from last year s squad that finished 14-15, 9-11 in the MIAA. Included among those five starters are two All-MIAA performers in Omaha natives Gentry Dietz and Abby Henry. Dietz, an All-MIAA First Team selection in 2009, has only one semester of eligibility remaining, so she will play the second semester of this season and will not be facing the Mavericks on Saturday night. Henry, an Omaha native and transfer from Creighton, was a second-team All-MIAA selection last year. Against UNO on Feb. 3, 2010, the junior guard scored 31 points. Henry is averaging a team-best 18.1 points and 4.0 assists per game this season. Northwest Missouri State features a roster full of local talent, as six players on the Bearcats roster hail from the state of Nebraska, including Henry, Dietz, Emily Hauder (Omaha), Shelly Martin (Omaha), Tara Roach (Elkhorn) and Kyla Roehrig (Papillioin). Northwest Missouri State was picked to finish fourth in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll. LAST TIME OUT FOR THE MAVS: EMPORIA STATE 66, UNO 54 EMPORIA, Kan. Playing its third straight MIAA road game, the UNO women s basketball team fell at the hands of defending national champion No. 8 Emporia State on Wednesday night, 66-54, at White Auditorium. Nebraska-Omaha (3-4, 0-3 MIAA) trailed by as many as 18 points in the second half, but whittled the lead down to eight with 4:18 left in the game. However, the Lady Hornets (6-1, 3-0 MIAA) extended the lead down the stretch to seal the win. Jamie Nash led the Mavericks with 11 points. Sara Reeves added 10 points off the bench. The Mavs got down early, as Emporia State raced to a 6-0 lead in the game s first two minutes. The Mavs kept within striking distance for much of the half, getting within 22-18 on a Paige Frauendorfer layup with 7:21 remaining in the half. But the Lady Hornets closed the half after that on a 15-4 run to take a 37-22 edge into the locker room. In the second half, two free throws by the Lady Hornets Kelly Balcom pushed the lead to 50-32 with 13:41 to play. The Mavs didn t go away though, as they have shown in all three of their conference road games. Reeves converted a four-point play, then Jordan Spencer scored her only basket of the night and Nash made a layup to make it 50-40 with 10:54 left. Emporia State extended the lead back to 14 points, but four more points from Reeves and an old-fashioned threepoint play by Heather Pohl, sandwiched around a Balcom free throw, brought the lead down to just eight at 57-49, with 4:18 to play. The Lady Hornets answered with four points, though, and UNO didn t score again until the 1:41 mark. The Lady Hornets hit 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to walk away with the 66-54 win. LAST TIME THEY MET: UNO 81, NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE 77 OMAHA, Neb. Heather Pohl had 11 of her team-high 16 points in the second half to lead the UNO women s basketball team to an 81-77 win over Northwest Missouri State on Feb. 3, 2010 at Sapp Fieldhouse. With the win, the Mavericks earned a split of the season series with the Bearcats. The win spoiled a big night for Omaha native and Bearcat guard Abby Henry, who led all scorers with 31 points. UNO led by as many as 12 points in the first half, but Northwest rallied to take a 40-38 lead at halftime. Mavs guard Paige Frauendorfer hit a jumper in the final minutes and made two free throws to seal the win for the Mavs.

STEALING THE SPOTLIGHT Sophomore guard Jamie Nash ranked 15th nationally in steals per game in her freshman campaign in 2009-10, averaging 3.0 steals per contest. Nash was the highest-ranked MIAA player within the final NCAA Division II statistics report released in March, and her performance for the year earned her a spot on the conference s all-defensive team. This season, Nash recorded a career-high 11 steals in a 69-38 win over Calumet College on Nov. 27. Nash earned the first double-double of her career, as she also scored 13 points in the victory. Nash s 11 steals was one short of the school-record 12 steals, set by Linda Schabloske on Jan. 30, 1993. FRESH FACES Head Coach Patty Patton Shearer has eight newcomers on her young roster for 2010-11, highlighted by transfers in sophomore guard Carly Cator (San Francisco State), junior forwards Jasamine Reeves (Lon Morris JC) and Lauren Andrews (Labette CC). Three freshmen are competing for playing time this season: guard Amanda Woodring (Millard West) and forwards Stacia Gebers (Superior) and Jordan Spencer (Millard West). Two freshmen, guards Natasha Mueller (Seward) and Aisle Quinlan (Des Moines Dowling Catholic), are redshirting. YOUNG EXPERIENCE DEFINES MAVERICKS IN 2010-11 UNO s returning squad may be primarily young this year, but the group gained considerable experience in the 2009-10 campaign. Sophomore guard Jamie Nash led the team in total assists and steals as a freshman, and junior guard Heather Pohl was one of two Mavericks to average in double-figure scoring with 10.2 points per game. The preseason conference standings are chosen in a survey of MIAA head coaches and media members. The Mavericks earned 43 points in the coaches poll and 66 in the media list. The 12 conference coaches selected Washburn as their preseason favorite, while media voters had the Lady Blues and defending national champion Emporia State tied for their top choice. UNO NAMED TO 2009-10 WBCA ACADEMIC TOP 25 The 2009-10 UNO women s basketball team earned a spot on the Women s Basketball Coaches Association s Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll, the WBCA announced in July. The list recognizes schools throughout the nation that carry the best overall team grade-point averages for the entire season. The Mavs rounded out all NCAA Division II institutions at 25th, posting a team GPA of 3.403. It marked the first time since 2006-07 that UNO was included on the WBCA Academic Top 25. NEXT UP FOR THE MAVS... The Mavericks host Lincoln University on Saturday, Dec. 18, at 5:30 p.m., at Sapp Fieldhouse. That will be the final game before Christmas break, as UNO doesn t return to action until Sunday, Jan. 2 at Missouri Western.
