REACHING 100 IN STYLE Head Coach Patty Patton Shearer recorded her 100th win at UNO in emphatic fashion with an 87-83 win over No. 6 Washburn on Saturday, Jan. 22. Patton Shearer became just the second coach in Mavs history to reach 100 wins at the school. Cherri Mankenberg, who compiled a 344-277 record from 1976-98, is the only other coach to do so. Patton Shearer s record at UNO is 100-90, and her career record stands at 160-139. STEALING THE TOP SPOT Sophomore guard Jamie Nash is averaging 3.4 steals per game, which ranks first in the MIAA. A 2009-10 MIAA All-Defensive Team member, Nash recorded a career-high 11 steals this season in a 69-38 win over Calumet College on Nov. 27. Nash earned the first double-double of her career, as she also scored 13 points in the victory. Nash s 11 steals was one short of the school-record 12 steals, set by Linda Schabloske on Jan. 30, 1993. TELLING STATS When UNO s opponent scores more points off turnovers this season, the Mavs are 0-10. Also, when UNO s starters are outscored by the opponent s starters, the Mavs are 0-10. Against Emporia State on Saturday, the Lady Hornets starters outscored UNO s, 54-48.

Jamie Nash is averaging 11.5 points per game and 3.4 steals per game, which ranks first in the MIAA. Nash was the highest-ranked MIAA player within the final NCAA Division II statistics report released in March, and her performance for the year earned her a spot on the conference s all-defensive team. YOUNG EXPERIENCE DEFINES MAVERICKS IN 2010-11 UNO s returning squad may be primarily young this year, but the group gained considerable experience in the 2009-10 campaign. Category Ret. Three freshmen are competing for playing time this season: guard Amanda Woodring (Millard West) and forwards Stacia Gebers (Superior) and Jordan Spencer (Millard West). Two freshmen, guards Natasha Mueller (Seward) and Aisle Quinlan (Des Moines Dowling Catholic), are redshirting. MAVS CHOSEN EIGHTH IN MIAA PRESEASON COACHES POLL Nebraska-Omaha was picked to finish eighth in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association s 2010-11 preseason polls, the league office announced in October. The preseason conference standings are chosen in a survey of MIAA head coaches and media members. The Mavericks earned 43 points in the coaches poll and 66 in the media list. The 12 conference coaches selected Washburn as their preseason favorite, while media voters had the Lady Blues and defending national champion Emporia State tied for their top choice. UNO NAMED TO 2009-10 WBCA ACADEMIC TOP 25 The 2009-10 UNO women s basketball team earned a spot on the Women s Basketball Coaches Association s Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll, the WBCA announced in July. The list recognizes schools throughout the nation that carry the best overall team grade-point averages for the entire season. The Mavs rounded out all NCAA Division II institutions at 25th, posting a team GPA of 3.403. It marked the first time since 2006-07 that UNO was included on the WBCA Academic Top 25. HEAD COACH PATTY PATTON SHEARER Rocky Mountain College, 1990 7th year at UNO, 11th year of career Record at UNO: 100-90 (.526) Career Record: 160-139 (.535) Patty Patton Shearer has led the Mavericks to winning seasons four out of the past five years. In the Mavs first year in the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association in 2008-09, Patton Shearer guided them to an 11-9 record, the first winning mark in conference play since 1991-92. UNO went its last 16 years in the North Central Conference without a winning conference record before the turnaround in the always tough MIAA. Before coming to UNO, Patton Shearer was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference s Coach of the Year in 2001-02 after turning a 2-24 team into a 17-8 squad. Patton Shearer earned the honor again in 2003-04 after guiding Fort Lewis to a school-record 23 wins and the league s West Division title in her fourth and final year as the head coach at the school. She took over a Fort Lewis program in 2000 that had recorded just one winning season in the previous 11 years. Her final three years there she went 58-25 (.699) with a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2003-04. Her ability to turn around a program showed early in her UNO coaching career as well. During the 2005-06 season, her second with the Mavs, she led them to their first winning season in six years and the most wins since the 1991-92 season. In 2007-08, the Mavericks started 14-1, the best start in school history and recorded their third straight winning season with a mark of 17-12. Alyssa Green was named to the All-NCC team while Amanda Brodsack earned Newcomer of the Year accolades. Patton Shearer compiled a 122-32 record in five years as the head girl s basketball coach at Catalina Foothills High School (Ariz.) while winning two conference titles, three region tournament championships and the 1997 Arizona 4A state championship. Patton Shearer graduated from Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Mont., in 1990 with a bachelor s degree in anthropology/sociology. She played one year of basketball for the Bears, earning All-Frontier Conference honors as a guard, after playing two seasons at Northern Arizona University. She earned a master s degree in higher education with a concentration in administration from the University of Arizona in 1992. Patton Shearer is a native of Marana, Ariz., and she graduated from Marana High School in 1985, where she was a standout in basketball and track & field. While at Marana, she earned Converse Athletic/ Academic All-America and BCI All-America honors. She was also the captain of the all-state team. Patton Shearer s father, Norm Patton, was one of the most successful high school and junior college coaches in the state of Arizona as men s basketball coach at Marana High School, Pima College and Central Arizona College and is in the Southern Arizona Sports Hall of Fame. Norm and Patty are also the only father/daughter combination to win state championships as high school coaches in Arizona. She was a member of the NCAA Division II North Central Regional Advisory Committee in 2007-08. Patton Shearer s husband, Gavin, teaches and coaches football in the Omaha Public School system. They have a 9-year-old daughter, Baylie. 2010-11 UNO WOMEN S BASKETBALL ROSTER No. Name Ht. Pos. Cl.
