Going for More The No. 8/9 University of Connecticut women s ice hockey team looks to extend its current unbeaten streak this weekend when it hosts Maine for a pair of games at Mark Edward Freitas Ice forum on Friday and Saturday. For the first time since the home opener, the Huskies will face-off against an opponent on a Friday evening with a 7 p.m. start against the Black Bears. Saturday s 4 p.m. start is the Huskies Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer game. Maine (6-11-5, 3-6-3-1) is just behind Uconn in the Hockey conference standings and most recently suffered a 3-1 loss against nationally-ranked and league leading Northeastern on Jan. 15. Decisive Decisions Connecticut extended its unbeaten streak at Vermont with a pair of decisive wins that saw a pair of UConn players record three points in a single game. On Saturday, in the Huskies 5-1 victory, senior Cristin Allen scored her second of the season and added a pair of assist to finish with three points. Sophomore Monique Weber sparked UConn to another win over the Catamounts on Sunday with a goal and a pair of assists. The Huskies have won both points in each of the last four Hockey East contests this season, dating back to the shootout victory at Boston University on Dec. 5. Action from Allen Senior Cristin Allen was named the Hockey East s Defensive Player of the Week on Monday for the first time this season. She is the second UConn player to be named the Defensive Player of the Week and it was her third weekly award from the conference in her career. Allen was one of two players to wrap up the weekend at Vermont with a +5 rating as well as contribute three points to the productive UConn offense. On Saturday, she scored her second of the season and tacked on a pair of helpers in the 5-1 win. Game 25 & 26 Maine at UConn (6-11-5, 3-6-3-1) Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. & Jan. 23 at 4 p.m. Mark Edward Freitas Ice forum Series UConn leads, 14-10-2 Last Meeting UConn, 7-2 (11/8/09) Skating Strides Last season, the Huskies led the way in fundraising as part of the conferences Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer event in February. UConn was responsible for a third of the entire total raised by the Hockey East with over $13,000 in donations from Storrs. Challenged to continue to lead the way for what will be the third-consecutive season, the Huskies host Maine on Jan. 23 for their Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer game. Fans will be able to purchase Pink Skates that will be displayed in Freitas throughout the month for a $1.00 while t-shirts and water bottles are available for a minimum donation of $5.00. Elite List of Talent Connecticut was an elite list of competitors to participate in the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase and will do so in its final year at Mellon Arena. The Huskies were joined by the club teams from Robert Morris and Penn State, a game that was a predecessor to the RMU varsity team s upset over then-no. 1 Miami (Ohio). Other varsity teams to have participated in the showcase are Notre Dame (2006) and Ohio State

(2007, 2009). UConn s defeat of the RMU women s ice hockey team is the first loss for the Colonials since joining the PCHS in 2009. Head Coach...Heather Linstad... It was the first time that UConn has scored exactly four goals in back-to-back games since the 2008-09 season against St. Lawrence and Clarkson. In addition to Garcia s combined 54 saves against the Colonials, she made 27 stops in her third shutout victory of the season. Michelle Binning scored three goals over the two games. Freshman Maude Blain tallied her first of the season with a shorthanded goal to start the Jan. 8 contest while juniors Brittany Murphy and Jennifer Chaisson joined Binning on the board on Jan. 9. Four Over Two for Co Senior assistant captain Michelle Binning pulled in Hockey East Pure Hockey Player of the Week honors on Jan. 5, sharing the title with another student-athlete. Binning was incredibly effective against the Big Green, scoring the gamewinner on Jan. 2 and recording three points in the 3-3 tie (Jan. 3). She had a hand in each goal, tacking on an assist to the first of the game and scoring two power-play goals of her own against Dartmouth. Binning has been named the Player of the Week twice this season and three times in her career. The Oshawa, Ont. native leads the team with 22 points for a teamhigh 15 goals, five of which have come on the power play. Ringing in the New Year A two-game series at home marked the start of the New Year for the Huskies, with a pair of games against their second-consecutive ECAC opponent in Dartmouth. UConn held off an attempted Big Green comeback on Jan. 2 after jumping out to a 2-0 lead with goals from Casey Knajdek and Amy Hollstein. Michelle Binning tallied her second gamewinner of the season to aid the Huskies in a favorable 3-2 decision. On Jan. 3, she scored two-consecutive power-play goals in a physical game that saw 18 penalties called between the two teams. UConn scored three unanswered goals en route to the 3-3 tie to capping off the two-game stint at Freitas. Back Assist It Again Senior assistant captain Cristin Allen has resumed her role as the assist leader with a team-best 14 assists this season. She is among the team s scoring leaders with 14 assists and two goals. She is second in the Hockey East among defensemen with 15 points this season. Coming Up Fast Right behind Cristin Allen in scoring defensemen is sophomore Sami Evelyn, who after a relatively slow start had a pair of assists at Vermont (Jan. 16 & 17). She jumped into the league leading mix after a pair of assists against Yale (Nov. 28) in the Nutmeg Classic Championship game and a pair of goals over Boston University (Dec. 4). Evelyn is third in the Hockey East among defensemen with 13 points from three goals and eight assists. Through 24 games, she has exceeded her freshman year campaign effort of 11 points (4G, 7A). More Than One Senior captain Amy Hollstein had a solid weekend against Dartmouth (Jan. 2 & 3) with a goal in each game and adding an assist on the gamewinner. She scored the final goal fo the game at Vermont (Jan. 17) on Sunday. Shollstein is third with 82 career points and has recorded 11 points in 24 games. She has scored six goals, including a pair of gamewinners and five assists. Net Worth Sophomore Alexandra Garcia was named the Hockey East s Defensive Player of the Week for two-consecutive weeks, pulling in her second-straight honor in on Dec. 14.

Following a career-high save effort against the Huskies second-consecutive nationallyranked opponent, Garcia turned aside 35 Crimson shots. She boasts a 1.81 goals-against average and a.923 overall save percentage. In Hockey East play, she has a GAA of 1.65, good for second in the conference. Thus far, the Pointe-Claire, Que. native is 10-5-5 between the pipes with three shutouts. 3x3 In five road games, the Huskies have had at least one player record three points in a single contest. Most recently, in back-to-back games at Vermont, senior Cristin Allen and sophomore Monique Weber each finished a game in the series with points. Each scored a goal and had a pair of assists against the Catamounts. Freshman Kelly Horan put forth a career-effort with three assists at Yale (Nov. 28) in the Nutmeg Classic championship. Junior Jennifer Chaisson scored twice and had an assist at Maine (Nov. 7). On Oct. 23, a trio of players finished the game at Brown with three points as Rebecca Hewett (3A), Jessica Lutz (2G, 1A) and Elisabeth Stathopulos (2G, 1A) did so against the Bears. Prior to the Huskies performance at Brown, UConn had not had a single player record three points in a single game since Jan. 23, 2009. One More, Down One Since the program record was set in 2002-03 three season, the Huskies have matched their five shorthanded goal effort three times. Thus far in 2009-10, UConn has once again matched the five shorthanded goal plateau and need one more to set a new team record. Amy Hollstein was the first player to score with the opposition on the power play with the first such goal of her career at Brown (Oct. 23). Three players, scored shorthanded goals at Maine (Nov. 8) and Maude Blain netted her first career goal a man down at Mellon Arena (Jan. 8). UConn vs. Hockey East UConn is 74-75-23 against the seven Hockey East teams, facing New Hampshire (30), Providence (30) and Boston College (29) the most times in program history. In the midst of a four-game hiatus from conference action, the Huskies are currently sixth in the league with a 4-3-4-1 record.
