The Air Force track and field team returns to ac on this week with several meets around California, including the pres gious Mt. SAC Relays. While a pair of Falcons started compe on today at the Mt. SAC/California Invita onal Mul -Events Meet, the rest of the squad will compete at the Relays, the Beach Invita onal and the Bryan Clay Invita onal over the April 17-19 weekend. THE NUTS AND BOLTS OF THE WEEK Ac on for the 55th-annual Mt. SAC Relays begin on Thursday, April 17, and con nue through Saturday, April 19, at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut, while addi onal meets will take place on Friday, April 18, in Azusa (Bryan Clay Invita onal) and Saturday, April 19, in Norwalk (Beach Invita onal). REGIONAL ROUNDUP As a team, the Air Force men are ranked fourth in this week s USTFCCCA Mountain Region Rankings. DOUBLE DUTY With a season debut of 199 6 in the javelin throw at the Air Force Relays, Garre Griffin is ranked sixth on the USTFCCCA s list of Outdoor Bests by Collegiate Football Players. CAUTION! FALLING RECORDS! Three Academy records fell during Jim Click Shootout on April 12, including two that had stood for more than nine years. With winning efforts, Grant Hamilton used a career-best 59 10½ to break the Academy s 13-year-old record in the shot put and Blue Kearney be ered the program s nine-year-old record in the long jump with a personal-best distance of 24 7¾. Rachel Herald improved her own Air Force record in the high jump a er finishing second with a clearance of 5 8¾. RELAY ING SOME INFORMATION Morgan Malone and Mikayla Robertson had a strong showing in the relays at the Jim Click Shootout, helping the Falcons to mes ranked among the program s best in both the 4x100- and 4x400-meter events. The pair teamed with Kassie Gurnell and Naomi Alston to clock the second-fastest 4x100-meter me in program history (47.59) and ran with Stephanie Robb and Cecily Agu on the Academy s sixth-fastest 4x400- meter me (3:51.95). Individually, Alston recorded the ninth-fastest 200-meter me (25.63) in program history. BUT WAIT, THERE S MORE In addi on to running on the second-fastest 4x100-meter relay, Kassie Gurnell and Mikayla Robertson paced Air Force to half of the top-six overall finishes in the triple jump. Gurnell won the event with a distance of 40 2, while Angelea Ross finished second (39 1 ) and Robertson placed sixth (36 11¾ ). JUST THROWING IT OUT THERE Freshman Taylor Hulslander became the first Air Force thrower to surpass the 200-foot mark in the javelin this season, placing fourth at the April 12 meet with a career-best toss of 201 4. IN REMEMBRANCE Members of the Air Force track and field team will be wearing black ribbons this season in honor of former teammate Capt David (Lissy) Lyon, who was killed in ac on in Afghanistan on December 27, 2013. Lyon, a three-year le erwinner as a thrower for the Air Force track and field team, was the 2008 Mountain West champion in the shot put. JUST THROWING IT OUT THERE Highlighted by a pair of addi ons to the program s all- me record book, Air Force took seven of the eight tles in the throwing events at the Air Force Relays. Cydnee Reese tossed a career-best 154 5 to win the discus throw and debut in sixth in the Academy s record book, while Katelyn Holland recorded a career-best 44 8¼ to take first in the shot put and improve her No. 8 ranking on the program s all- me list. Spencer Baldwin and Darby Maier earned men s tles in the discus and shot put, respec vely, while Garre Griffin and Jacki French swept the javelin throw and Becca Bauman won the hammer throw. PICKING UP THE SPEED Alexa Chacon clocked the sixth-fastest 100-meter hurdles me in Academy history (14.65) to win that event at the AF Relays. PUTTING UP SOME BIG NUMBERS Despite cold, blustery weather condi ons, the Falcons accounted for 23 first-place finishes during their outdoor home opener on April 5 at the Academy s Cadet Outdoor Track and Field Complex. GOING UP Dylan Bell and Cort Rogers both impacted the program s top-10 pole vault rankings, making their career debuts on the program s all- me list. Bell cleared a career-best 17 6½ to win the event and enter the all- me rankings at No. 8, while Rogers cleared the 17-foot bar for the first me (17 0¾ ) to take third overall and debut in 10th on the all- me list. SWEEP IT UP In addi on to sweeping the event tles in the shot put, discus throw and javelin, Air Force also swept the high jump (Taylor Smith, Rachel Herald), triple jump (Kyle Gartrell, Kassie Gurnell), hurdles (Joey Wilkin at 110-meters, Alexa Chacon at 100-meters), 3000-meter run (Dan Caddigan, Heather Connick) and the distance medley relays. PUTTING UP SOME BIG NUMBERS Despite cold, blustery weather condi ons, the Falcons accounted for 23 first-place finishes during their outdoor home opener on April 5 at the Academy s Cadet Outdoor Track and Field Complex. MOVING IN... MOVING UP Anne e Eichenberger recorded the second-fastest 1500-meter me in Academy history (4:23.28) at the Stanford Invita onal, while Hannah Everson and Gavin Owens debuted in sixth on the program s all- me list in the 5000-meter run (17:05.91) and 3000-meter steeplechase (8:57.31), respec vely. In addi on to recording the sixth-fastest 5000-meter me in Academy history, Everson also broke the program s six-year-old Sophomore Class Record in that event. KEARNEY CONTINUES TO SHINE One week a er becoming the first Falcon in over a decade to impact the top five of the men s long jump, Blue Kearney climbed from fourth to second following a career-best jump of 24 4½ at the Bobcat Invita onal on March 29. By adding over a halffoot to his previous best, Kearney finished second at the meet and moved within a half-inch of the Academy s 11-year-old record. FALCONS TAKE FOURTH AT AZTEC INVITATIONAL Six Falcons traveled to San Diego State s Aztec Invita onal on March 29... and combined to finish fourth in the overall Division I team standings at that meet. Kyle Gartrell (triple jump) and Dan Caddigan (5000-meter run) were the top DI finishers in their respec ve races, finishing second and third, respec vely, in the overall standings, while Stone Shoaf (800-meter run) and Sean Bapty (3000-meter steeplechase) added a pair of second-place finishes. Kevin Mihalik and Jason Engel rounded out the Falcons scorers in the Division I field, as they placed third and fourth, respec vely, in the 1500-meter run. POLE VAULT PAIR EARNS TOP-FIVE FINISHES AT TEXAS RELAYS Joey Uhle cleared a season-best 17 6½ to e for 15th in the invita onal sec on of the pole vault at the Clyde Li lefield Texas Relays on March 29 just one day a er Cort Rogers debuted in same placement of the B sec on with a mark of 16 6¾. YOU LOOK FAMILIAR Four sets of Falcons a ended the same high schools prior to beginning their collegiate careers at Air Force. Besides the Perkins twins (Charlie and Zach), who both a ended Alameda High School in Alameda, Calif., the Falcons roster boasts two Stevens High School graduates in juniors Riley Coates and Sierra Schepper (Rapid City, S.D.), two Ronald Reagan High School graduates in juniors Erica Carson and Morgan Malone (San Antonio, Texas) and two Episcopal High School graduates in senior Paige Shirley and freshman Emily Smithwick. In addi on, Jalen Fooster and William Kent both competed for the Throw 1 Deep Track Club while growing up in Marie a, Ga. FUN FACT The Falcons pole vault duo of Paige Shirley and Emily Smithwick accounted for three state tles in four years for Episcopal High School, as Shirley claimed back-to-back tles in 2009-10 and Smithwick won the state tle in 2012. CORONA NAMED MW ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Following a career-best 1500-meter me of 3:46.04 at the Baldy Cas llo Classic, Patrick Corona was named the Mountain West Men s Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week on March 25. With his me, which placed him third among 38 runners at the outdoor-opening meet, Corona currently leads the conference and is ranked first in the NCAA.

Herald added a half-inch to the previous standard that had stood since 1986 and was originally set in 1983, while easily improving her own personal clearance of 5 7. WE RE NOT DONE YET Gavin Owens also clocked a program record at the Baldy Cas llo Invita onal on March 22, as he sha ered his own Academybest me in the 2000-meter steeplechase. Finishing second in the non-tradi onal race, Owens clocked a me of 5:49.53 to delete over 35 seconds from the me he first set last season. ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOKS With a long jump distance of 23 11½ at the Baldy Cas llo Classic on March 22, Blue Kearney became the first Air Force athlete since 2003 to impact the program s top-five list of that event s all- me standings. With the fourth-best mark in Academy history, Kearney was first jumper in seven years to make any impact on the top-10. GETTING OFF TO A STRONG START In addi on to the Academy high jump record by Rachel Herald, four other members of the women s team also impacted the women s all- me standings during the season-opener. Becca Bauman improved her hammer throw distance to the fourth-best mark in Academy history (172 6 ), while Katelyn Holland (eighth, shot put at 44 4¼ ), Rebecca Esselstein (ninth, 800-meter run in 2:14.09) and Riley Vann (ninth, pole vault at 11 7¾ ) all debuted on the program s top-10 list in their respec ve events. SWEEP IT UP Backed by three seniors and one freshman, Air Force claimed the men s and women s tles in both the 800- and 3000-meter events. Alex Lindsay and Anne e Eichenberger teamed up to claim first-place honors in their respec ve 800-meter races, while Isaiah Bragg and Lindy Long captured the two tles in the 3000-meter run. MEN RANKED 19TH AT PROGRESS REPORT FOR PROGRAM OF THE YEAR Following a 20th-place finish at the 2013 NCAA Cross Country Championships and Joey Uhle s seventh-place finish in the pole vault at the 2014 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships (a placement that put Air Force 56th in the overall team standings), the men enter the final part of the trifecta ranked 19th in the USTFCCCA s John McDonnell Program of the Year standings. It is the first me Air Force has been listed in the Program of the Year standings, which recognizes team finishes at the NCAA Championships for cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field. WHO S BACK FOR THE OUTDOOR SEASON The Falcons outdoor roster includes two All-Americans (Zach Perkins, 1500m in 2013; Joey Uhle, pole vault in 2013), two Mountain West champions (Perkins, 1500m in 2013; Alex Lindsay, 800m in 2012), nine addi onal all-conference selec ons (Anne e Eichenberger, 800m in 2013; Grant Hamilton, shot put in 2013; Garre Griffin, javelin in 2013; Kassie Gurnell, triple jump in 2013; Blue Kearney, long jump in 2013; David Ptacek, 200m in 2013; Kobi Rex, high jump in 2012-13; Cort Rogers, pole vault in 2012; Tim Urista, javelin in 2012-13), two Academy record holders (Perkins, 1500m; Gurnell, triple jump) and three members of the women s 4x100-meter relay that set a program standard last year (Gurnell, Naomi Alston, Morgan Malone). LEADING THE WAY Eight seniors will serve as team captains for the track and field program during the 2013-14 season. Pole vaulter Ellio Beski, thrower William Kent, middle distance runner Alex Lindsay and sprinter David Ptacek were chosen to lead the men s team, while middle distance runner Anne e Eichenberger, jumper Kassie Gurnell, pole vaulter Paige Shirley and javelin thrower Kim Smith were elected to serve as captains of the women s squad. LINDEMAN CELEBRATING 25 YEARS WITH THE FALCONS IN 2014 Ralph Lindeman is celebra ng his 25th season as Air Force s head coach this season. A 12- me conference coach of the year, Lindeman has guided the men s team to three Mountain West tles in the last five championship seasons (2012 indoor and outdoor, 2013 outdoor). He is joined on the Falcons coaching staff by associate head coach Sco Steffan, assistant coaches Juli Benson, Ryan Collins, Allen Johnson and Keith Vance, and volunteer coaches Bob Graf, Mark Stanforth and Ron White. HOME SWEET HOME The Falcons will host three compe ons at the Cadet Outdoor Track and Field Complex. Following their Combined Events Meet on April 3-4, the Falcons will host the Air Force Relays on April 5 and the Air Force Twilight Invita onal on May 9. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT... Joey Uhle closed out the indoor season earning first-team All-America honors following a seventh-place finish (17 8½ ) at the NCAA Championships. The indoor season saw the Falcons account for three Mountain West championships, including both 800-meter tles (Zach Perkins, Anne e Eichenberger) and a co-championship on the pole vault (Uhle, Dylan Bell). Se ng Academy records at the 600-, 800- and 1000-meter distances, Eichenberger paced six Falcons to new program standards. Morgan Malone (200-meter dash), Naomi Alston (300-meter dash), Rachel Herald (high jump) and Kassie Gurnell (triple jump) added Academy-best marks on the women s side, while Grant Hamilton set a new Academy record in the men s shot put.
