PWHS CHARACTER COUNTS Girls Cross Country by Joe Adamak ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Fraser Toal Fraser Toal is the boys cross country athlete of the week. Fraser first came out for cross country as a sophomore. At that time it was evident that he had the natural talent to be a good runner. What has come to light over the past three seasons is his strong character. Fraser embodies all six pillars of character and has been a pleasure to work with as a coach. Fraser has been a member of the boys varsity CC team for the past two seasons, but this season he has stepped up his contributions to the team. Fraser's contributions began over the summer when he choose to meet with his teammates at 10:00 in the morning to run and put in the base work that will help them reach their team goals. Fraser also sacrificed a good paying job so that it would not get in the way of ability to focus on training and racing during the school year. Fraser has also increased his leadership at practice and in competitions. He has done an outstanding job of getting practice started on time and in keeping the underclassmen focused. Fraser has also done and outstanding job of welcoming the new members to the team and helping them to feel comfortable. Congratulations Fraser! The Girls finished tied for fourth place, one point out of third place, in the star studded 33 team field at the 49th annual Racine St. Catherine's Angel Invitational. Division One powerhouses DSHA and Brookfield Central placed first and second in the invitational. They were followed by the 2016 Division One third place finisher Kettle Moraine. The Pirates tied 2016 Division One state qualifier Menomonee Falls for 4th place. The Pirates were the only Division Two team to finish in the top five. Leading the way for the Pirates was senior Alexis Reichardt who finished 17th with a time of 20:43, in the 217 runner field. Alexis was followed by senior Payton Hurley (29th, 21:16) and freshman Mira Stimac (31st, 21:21). Rounding out the Pirates scoring were junior Jill Cavanaugh (44th, 21:45) and freshman Emma Goodman (46th, 21:46). All seven varsity runners finished in the top 65, Emma Meyer (64th, 22:14) and Clare Goodman (65th, 22:15). DSHA's Meghan Scott (the defending Division One state champion) was the overall race winner. Highlighting the JV race was a second place overall finish by freshman Bethany Stacey (21:54pr). 310 runners competed in the JV race. Other JV scorers were Katie Erlandson (13th, 22:47), Isa Shiflett (28th, 23:30), Emily Eckert (76th, 25:02pr) and Emma Strohl (108th, 26:01). Freshman Ashley Tourangeu (127th, 26:38), Mia Rosado (149th, 27:03pr) and Anna Russell (161st, 27:17pr) all ran excellent races on an extremely hot day. The Pirates have the upcoming week off from races as they get ready for the Kimberly Invitational on September 30th. They hope to have injured runners Natalie Lippe, Megan Barian, Josie DeMeritt and Molly Taft back in the lineup by then. 4 P age
Boys Cross Country by Mark Pasten GIRLS VARSITY Volleyball by Mary Kay Heinz Boys Varsity Football by John Bunyan The boys cross country team finished in 5th place with 258 points at the 39 team Angel Invite. The meet was hosted by Racine Saint Catherine's on UW- Parkside's Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course. The meet was won by Kenosha Bradford with 101 points. The Pirates didn't have a perfect day as a couple of the members of the top 5 had off days. Other members of the team did a great job of stepping up their games and helped the team to a very respectable finish. Leading the way was Miles Stimac who finished in 18th place out of the 233 varsity runners in a time of 17:11. He was followed by Brett Grisar in 35th place with at time of 17:37. Brett did a great job of getting out fast and working with Miles over the first 1/2 of the race. Next to finish for the Pirates was Fraser Toal in 42nd place with at time of 17:43. Fraser had a very strong 2nd 1/2 of the race and was able to close the gap between himself and Grisar. Isaiah Holland finished in 62nd place with a time of 18:01. Holland suffered a side cramp early on in the race and he did a great job of battling through that pain to finish where he did. Zach Gephart who was running in his 1st varsity race did an outstanding job coming in as the teams 5th runner and final scorer in the standings. Gephart finished in 101st place with at time of 18:43. The next finisher was Zach Miller who finished in 120th place with a time of 19:04. Rounding out the varsity was Ben Pasten who finished in 151st place with a time of 19:49. Game Date Sep 12, 2017 Nicolet came out strong against us. They went on huge runs, and didn t look back in the first set. We lost in the first 4-25. The second game we didn t let the first game control the way we played. We came out strong and ready to go. We played neck and neck, but then seemed to lose confidence. We ended up losing 15-25. The girls found their confidence again in the third, and come out strong. We stuck in there, but couldn t find our own rhythm. We lost 15-25. It was a learning game for us. We can only go up from here. The girls travel to Hartford for Conference play on Tuesday! The Pirates went on the road on Friday and beat undefeated Hartford with a score of 39-19! Boys Varsity Soccer by Sean O Brien GIRLS SWIMMING & DIVE by Melissa Hoogester backstroke; an awesome race, she finished third place! Wichmann (1:24.54) and Howell (1:29.64 a best time for her!) both also swam the 100 backstroke; Wichmann finished fourth and Howell finished fifth great race ladies! Last up was our breaststrokers, Grisar (1:38.09) and Heinecke (1:43.89 a personal best time by 2 seconds!) swimming the 100 breaststroke; both swam great races, Grisar finished fourth and Heinecke right behind finishing fifth place. It was a great home opener for us! The girls are working hard in practice and really noticing the hard work pay off in the meets! Onto our Pirate Invite on Saturday Game Date Sep 14, 2017 PIRATES: 1 CEDARBURG: 5 The Pirates had a busy week, taking on two tough conference opponents. The week started at Nicolet where the Pirates dropped a 4-0 decision. The Nicolet Knights came out faster than the Pirates and got an early goal. The Pirates were able to regain their composure in the second half and were putting Nicolet on their heels, but were unable to find the back of the net. On Thursday, the Pirates took on state ranked Cedarburg Bulldogs. The Pirates were unable to match the Bulldog's physical play and lost 5-1. Scoring his first goal as a Pirate was Abdallah Kahled. As always the Pirates demonstrated hard work and determination. Good Luck this week as the Pirates travel to Hartford to take on the mighty Orioles. Sep 12, 2017 Our first home meet of the season was against the bulldogs from Cedarburg. It was a great meet! We had awesome swims, great times and lots of fun! The evening began with the 200 medley relay team: Wichman, Grisar, Hannert and Marinez finishing third place with their time, 2:24.09! Hoag (4:01.70) was up next to swim the 200 freestyle; her first time swimming this event this season she had an awesome fourth place finish! Hannert (2:25.65 just hundredths off her season best) and Howell (2:49.72) swam the 200 freestyle. Both girls had a great race; Hannert finished fourth and it was Howell s first time swimming this event she finished fifth! Wichmann (3:02.50) was nervous to swim the 200 IM for her team, but she had an awesome swim finishing fourth place! Marinez (34.03) and Burke (39.78) both swam the 50 freestyle for their team last night; Marinez finished fourth and Burke right behind finishing fifth! Marinez (1:33.25) was up again as the lone brave soul to swim the 100 butterfly for her team; she swam an awesome race finishing fourth! Grisar (1:15.33 a personal best time by 4 seconds!), Heinecke (1:23.17 a personal best time by 4 seconds!), and Burke (1:31.53) all swam the 100 freestyle. All three girls swam a great race; Grisar finished fourth, Heinecke finished fifth and Burke finished sixth! Hannert (6:37.62 a season best by 5 seconds!) was the brave soul to take on the 500 freestyle; she finished an awesome fourth place! The 200 freestyle relay teams were up next. The A relay: Wichmann, Grisar, Howell, and Hannert swam an awesome third place with their time, 2:10.34 and the B relay team: Heinecke, Hoag, Burke and Marinez were right behind in fourth with their time, 2:46.01! Hoag (2:02.30 a season best time by 3 seconds!) was up swimming the 100 Girls Varsity Tennis by Julie Hays and Melonie Zielinski Last night we lost 0-7 to West Bend East. The whole team fought hard for every point and game and the score was closer than it looks. Kaylee Doll and Maggie Noll/Cassidy Yuhas fought hard in 3 rd set matches to try and beat their opponents. 6 P age
All of our Badger Boys and Girls represented our school and community in a very positive way at Badger Boys/Girls State this summer. Josey Schanen was elected the State Superintendent of Public Instruction at Badger Boys State this summer. With his election, he is also given the opportunity to give the Pledge this Thursday at Tony Ever s speech this Thursday in Madison. If you see Josey, please give him a pat on the back. He is very proud! These young men showed great character and represented Port with great pride.
