The number breaks the record of 6,465 season tickets bought for OU women s basketball last season. Though reserved level season tickets have sold out, general admission season tickets remain and fans are encouraged to purchase them prior to the start of the season. GA season tickets are available for $115. Group and single game tickets became available Monday, Nov. 19. Single game tickets for all home games are $8 for adults and $5 for youths (K-12). The Sooner fan base is one of the nation s fastest growing. The Oklahoma women s basketball team ranked No. 4 in attendance last season, averaging 10,437 fans. That was an increase of 37 percent from the 2005-06 season when Lloyd Noble Center games averaged 7,630, which was an increase of 35 percent over the previous season. Fans can purchase season tickets by calling th OU Ticket Office at (800) 456-GoOU or online at SoonerSports.com. National Attendance Leader Oklahoma set a program record for attendance last season and, if early indications prove true, another record should be set in 2007-08. After three home games, OU s per game attendance average stands at 9,608, currently No. 4 in the nation for average home game attendance. Oklahoma was No. 4 in national attendance last season and No. 2 in the Big 12 Conference with an average of 10,437 in the seats for OU s 12 home games. the Nation s Toughest Start Oklahoma will play 11 regular-season games, among eight different teams, ranked in the USA Today/ESPN Preseason Coaches Poll. That is not the toughest schedule in the nation as No. 1 Tennessee will look to earn its way back to the national title game with 12 games among 11 preseason Top 25 teams. However, OU will face a tougher start than any other team in college basketball with its first three games among teams in the top 12, including No. 1 Tennesee and No. 4 Maryland -- the past two national champions. All three of these games will be played at neutral sites. After games played through Dec. 6, Oklahoma s strength of schedule was rated No. 4 in the RPI. Previewing South Carolina After losing to new No. 1 Connecticut, 97-39, the Gamecocks have posted two straight wins including a 64-43 win at Clemson on Saturday, Dec. 22. Led by freshman guard Jordan Jones, who averages 13.4 points, South Carolina has four players who average double-digit scoring. OU and South Carolina have had one common opponent thus far. South Carolina lost to Illinois, 91-58, on Nov. 23, at the FIU Thanksgiving Classic in Miami, Fla. The Sooners defeated the Fighting Illini in Champaign, 77-67. Oklahoma defeated South Carolina, 78-51, in Columbia, S.C., last season. Courtney Paris had 15 points and 16 rebounds as the Gamecocks starting five were held to just 18 points combined. As of Thursday, Dec. 27, Oklahoma is No. 14 in projected RPI standings. South Carolina is No. 49. 2007-08 Oklahoma Sooners Numerical Roster No. Name Pronunciation Yr.-Exp. Pos. Ht. One, to be one of the top three teams in field-goal percentage defense, which Oklahoma was last season at No. 3. Two, is to cut down on turnovers and, specifically, be in the top three in the NCAA in assist-to-turnover ratio. Here is where the Sooners presently stand on meeting their team goals. The next NCAA rankings will be released Jan. 4. RECAPPING CENTRAL ARKANSAS Courtney Paris recorded her 71st consecutive double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds as No. 9 Oklahoma matched its program record for points scored rolled into the holiday break with a 121-48 rout of Central Arkansas. All but one of the 12 players who suited up scored for Oklahoma (8-2), which hasn t lost since falling to Maryland and Tennessee in the Sooners first two games of the season. Eight of them reached double figures, including freshman Jenny Vining, who had 18 points. Central Arkansas suited up only eight players, including four freshmen, and suffered its second-worst loss ever. The Sugar Bears, members of the Southland Conference, are in their second season in NCAA Division I after going 14-14 last season. Their only wins this season have come against Grambling State and Division II Arkansas-Monticello. The game figured to be a mismatch. Oklahoma s RPI rating entering the game was 10, while Central Arkansas was 337, out of 339 Division I basketball teams. Sure enough, Oklahoma sprinted to an 18-0 lead in the first five minutes and led 64-11 by halftime, even as Coale subbed early and often. The Sooners missed the school record for points in a half -- set against Midwestern State (Texas) in January 1984 -- by two points, and tied the school mark for fewest points allowed in a half, set against Texas A&M on Jan. 26, 2002. Paris, who played 22 minutes, was one of two Oklahoma players to record a double-double. Her primary backup, sophomore Abi Olajuwon, had 12 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman Carlee Roethlisberger had 10 points and eight rebounds. Oklahoma passed the 100-point mark on a follow shot by Roethlisberger with 7:37 left and tied the school single-game scoring mark on Rose Hammond s basket with 16 seconds left. The Sooners also scored 121 points in a win over Prairie View A&M on Nov. 29, 1990. Oklahoma outrebounded Central Arkansas 63-30 and went 53 of 90 from the field, a 59 percent clip. The Sooners broke the Big 12 Conference record for made field goals of 51, set by Texas against Centenary on Dec. 16, 2000. Landmark Second Half Oklahoma s 11-point halftime deficit was its largest to overcome for victory in the Sherri Coale Era. Oklahoma s 49 points in the second half was its most when trailing at the half and ending with a win. Oklahoma s 22-point second-half margin was its largest hen trailing at the half and ending with the victory. Oklahoma s 17 points in the first half was it s fewest in 129 games, when it trailed 29-17 in the first half in a loss against Texas on Jan. 10, 2004. Amanda Thompson s double-double, of which 10 points and nine rebounds came in the second half, was the first of her career and the first by a current Sooner not named Paris. Fantastic Four Minutes Oklahoma walked away from East Lansing, Mich., with a victory thanks in large part to how it opened the second half. It s been a trend of Sherri Coale-coached teams to come out from the locker room much more intense than their opponents to start the second period. Considering that a four-minute interval is 10 percent of a game, during the first four-minute interval following halftime Oklahoma holds a statistical advantage over its opponent in all categories except 3-point field goal percentage. During the span, OU is shooting 29 percent (2-of-7) while opponents are shooting 40 percent (4-of-10) from beyond the arc. Oklahoma is scoring 13 percent of its points. Opponents are scoring 11 percent. The duo has posted a double-double in the same game six times (four as freshman and two as sophomores). OU is 22-2 when both Parises reach double figure scoring and 6-0 when both achieve a double-double. Paris passed Caton Hill (2000-04), who amassed a career total of 1,653. Next on the list is Stacey Dales (1999-2002) with 1,920 points. Given her current rate, Paris should pass Dales in eight games, the Jan. 30 home contest versus Kansas. Phylesha Whaley (1997-2000), who played 116 games, is the OU career scoring leader with 2,187 points. Should OU once again make a run through the Big 12 Conference Tournament and NCAA Tournament, Paris could pass that mark by the end of the season. Should Paris finish her career with her current scoring average of 21.9 points, she will destroy the previous record of 18.9 held by Whaley. BLOCK PARTY Courtney Paris passed LaNae Jones (1993-96) as OU s career blocks leader during the Nov. 27 games versus North Texas. Paris entered the contest two blocks from Jones record of 243 and counted five in the game to move past to 246. Paris, who has OU s single-season record with 119 blocks as a freshman (and is No. 2 on the single-season list with 111 blocks as a sophomore) currently has 262 career blocks. She and Jones are the only two Sooners ever to record 100 blocks. With a rate of 3.3 blocks per game and at least 45 games left in her career, Paris could break 400 career blocks by the time she leaves the college game. TCU s Sandra Irvin (2002-05) has the NCAA record for career blocks with 480 in 127 games (3.78 per game). She has an active streak of 71 consecutive games with a double-double. The streak began with a 22-point, 24-rebound effort versus UCLA on Dec. 5, 2007, and will be 755 days old when OU meets South Carolina on Dec. 30, 2007. Happy Birthday, Record Paris double-double streak was born with a 22-point, 24-rebound effort against UCLA on Dec. 5, 2005. The streak celebrated its second birthday Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2007, as Oklahoma defeated Illinois. Courtney s 22 points and 14 rebounds pushed the streak to 68 consecutive games. Let s Go Streaking After review of the Mississippi State game by both institutions, Courtney Paris double-double streak was restored. Though it is widely believed that Courtney Paris owns both the NCAA women s basketball Division I records for career and consecutive double-doubles, those records are still being researched. However, the NCAA double-double records for men s basketball do exist. The longest men s double-double streak was 40 games by North Carolina s Billy Cunningham, which coincidentally began on the same day (Dec. 5), 43 years prior to Paris streak. The most career double-doubles by the men belongs to Tim Duncan, who recorded 87 in his four seasons at Wake Forest (1994-97). The top five men s records are below. Her standard is the double-double and, if and when, she fails to get her next, it will be a bigger story than when she next achieves it. She has reached the double-double figure by halftime on 11 occasions and has played 15 second halves alone in which she achieved a double-double. Her most recent was a 11-point, 12-rebound first half versus Tulsa on Dec. 8. Paris had 10 double-double halves as a freshman and 14 as a sophomore. Paris career high for points in a half is 23 (Michigan State, Dec. 21, 2005; New Mexico, Dec. 30, 2006; and Oklahoma State, Feb. 4, 2007) and rebounds in a half is 14 (Baylor, March 11, 2006; Kansas State, Jan. 3, 2007; and Missouri, Feb. 25, 2007). Across the Board As a freshman, Courtney Paris set the NCAA single-season record with 539 rebounds and neared the mark as a sophomore with 526. As a junior, Paris is averaging 15.4 boards, slighly better than her 15.0 rate as a freshman. Paris has owned OU s offensive rebounds record since last season and took over as the No. 1 total rebounder in the Sooners season opener. She passed Caton Hill for No. 1 on OU s defensive rebounding list with seven defensive boards versus Mississippi State (Nov. 27). Paris currently has 1,220 career rebounds with 411 coming off the offensive glass and 809 defensively. Baylor s Sophia Young (2002-06) currently holds the Big 12 Conference record for total rebounds with 1,316. Young also owns the career offensive rebounds (489) and defensive rebounds (827) records. No other Sooner in history has recorded 400 or more total rebounds in a single season.

However, while these freshmen are very talented and will make their names known quickly, they do draw comparisons to some familiar faces. Danielle Robinson 5-9 G San Jose, Calif. Robinson was the Sooners surprise pickup of the 2007 recruiting class. After acknowledging OU was off her radar until her official visit, Robinson made the decision to be a Sooner before she checked her bags for the return flight home. The speedy guard will see time both on and off the point and draws comparisons to Dionnah Jackson. Carlee Roethlisberger 6-1 F Findlay, Ohio Having the third most recognizable surname speaks to the star power on the Sooners roster. Yes, Carlee is the sister of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben, but she may the family s best athlete. Roethlisberger is leanest Sooner and the one with the greatest ceiling in terms of untapped basketball potential. Her play resembles another lean forward in former Sooner Leah Rush. Jenny Vining 5-9 G Marshall, Ark. This Arkansas high school star will remind fans of former Sooner Erin Higgins because of her 3-point range and accuracy, although Vining s may prove to be better in both cases. Head coach Sherri Coale says that Vining might be the best freshman she has ever coached because of her ability to quickly learn from mistakes and make correct adjustments in practice. Lauren Willis 5-11 G Overland Park, Kan. Willis was an all-stater in Kansas and walkedon to the OU program. She has been a stellar defender in practice as was quite the spark in OU s preseason intrasquad scrimmage as she went 3- for-3 from beyond the arc in limited action. Willis is the daughter of Steve Willis, a placekicker on Kansas State football s first ever bowl team, and the former Lois Groen, an All-American and Big Eight Conference track and field champion at Iowa State. C. Paris Big 12 Preseason POY For the second straight season, Oklahoma s Courtney Paris was named the Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year in the coaches vote. The 6-4 center, who averaged 23.5 points and 15.9 rebounds, was last season s Big 12 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year after leading the Sooners to title defenses of the conference s regular season and tournament championships. Ashley Paris was an honorable mention for the All-Big 12 team. Sooners Picked Second in Big 12 The Oklahoma Sooners were picked to finish second in this season s Big 12 Conference women s basketball standings in a preseason poll voted by the league s coaches. Texas A&M, the 2006-07 Big 12 co-champions with Oklahoma, received seven of 12 first-place votes to edge the Sooners, who received five first-place votes, in a split decision between the two teams. Paris a Preseason Wooden Award Candidate Courtney Paris was named one of 30 preseason candidates for the 2007-08 Women s Wooden Award announced by the John R. Wooden Award committee Wednesday, Oct. 31. Paris, a two-time Wooden All-American, was also a preseason nominee last year and was one of 16 finalists for the 2007 Women s Wooden Award. Tennessee s Candace Parker was the 2007 recipient of the honor. The award is named for the three-time college basketball All-American, 1932 National Player of the Year and 10-time national championship coach John Wooden. Created in 1976, the John R. Wooden Award is the most prestigious individual honor in college basketball. It is bestowed upon the nation s best player at an institution of higher education who has proven to his or her university that he or she is making progress toward graduation and maintaining a cumulative 2.0 GPA. Previous winners include such notables as Larry Bird (1979), Michael Jordan (1984), Tim Duncan (1997), and last year s recipients, Kevin Durant of Texas and Candace Parker of Tennessee. Paris and Team USA Qualify for Olympics Courtney Paris missed 30 days of the Sooners preseason training...and head coach Sherri Coale probably couldn t have been more pleased with the result. Courtney Paris, one of two collegians playing for the USA Basketball Women s Senior National Team, swept through the FIBA Americas Zone Tournament in Valdivia, Chile, winning the gold medal against Cuba on Sept. 30 and, more importantly, clinching a berth for the United States in next year s Olympic Games. Paris was a role-player for the U.S., as one of very few post players her size in international basketball. She averaged nine minutes per game as the Americans went through the tournament undefeated at 5-0. It was Paris seventh gold medal as part of a USA Basketball team. Paris and U21 Team win World Championship Paris earned twice as much gold this summer as she helped the USA Basketball Women s Under 21 Team to a World Championship title in July. The U.S. defeated Australia, 96-73, in the title game in Moscow, Russia, to give Paris and Team USA its fourth straight gold in age-group basketball. Paris played 39 games with USA Basketball in age group contests and never lost. She averaged 10.9 points and 8.0 rebounds in eight contests during the World Championships. SoonerSports.com Blog Even though she was out of the country, Courtney Paris kept everyone at home up to speed on her progress with USA Basketball via the OU Women s Basketball Blog on SoonerSports. com. OU head coach Sherri Coale submits regular postings and this season several OU players will enter the cyberspace realm with their own unique contributions. Red Bests White in Intrasquad Scrimmage The University of Oklahoma women s basketball team completed its intrasquad scrimmage Thursday night at the Lloyd Noble Center in front of 2,200 fans. Players split time between Red and White teams as they played four eight-minute quarters. The Red defeated White in three quarters and won the overall battle with a total score of 79-76. Each period was intense and down to the wire as the largest margin of victory in any quarter was four points. White got the best of Red in the first, 21-17, but Red bounced back with victories in the final three quarters (25-22 in the second, 12-11 in the third and 25-22 in the fourth.) Courtney Paris led the Sooners with 27 total points. She shot 9-of-16 (.563) from the field and added nine points at the free throw line. Paris missed a double-double by one rebound, but made contributions elsewhere with four assists and a steal in 27 minutes on the court. Nyeshia Stevenson scored 26 points and added three steals and two assists to her stat line as she took full advantage of her athletic ability in several fast breaks and one-on-one situations. OU s four freshman played with no fear as guards Danielle Robinson and Jenny Vining scored 14 points apiece, Lauren Willis shot 3-of-3 from beyond the arc for nine points and forward Carlee Roethlisberger totaled seven points and seven rebounds. Also scoring in double figures were Rose Hammond (15), Jenna Plumley (11) and Abi Olajuwon (11). Plumley, who played 31 of a possible 32 minutes, was effective running the point, shooting 3-of-9 from 3-point range and counting nine assists with just three turnovers. Ashley Paris had a game-high 12 rebounds and Amanda Thompson led with four steals. On Nov. 1, The Sooners routed NCAA Division II Henderson State 110-40 in front of 5,082 fans at the Lloyd Noble Center. The attendance was the fifth best in OU history for a women s exhibition game. The margin of victory (70) points, was two shy of OU s program record. On Nov. 6, The Sooners piled on points NAIA Division I Oklahoma Christian, 110-51, with an attendance of 5,172 -- the fourth best exhibition game attendance mark in program history.

Even fewer teams have had success while emphasizing the books on the same level as the balls. The symmetry is a trademark of Coale s program. She meticulously prepares her athletes to excel in the classroom and on the hardwood. In essence, master the game of life and the challenges presented on the court will fall like dominoes. Those obstacles have routinely been bulldozed during the Coale s 11 years as the head coach of Oklahoma. The numbers speak for themselves. Take for example the 21 straight semesters with a combined team GPA of 3.0 or better, the five Big 12 Regular Season Championships, the 68 Academic All-Big 12 honors, the four Big 12 Tournament Championships, the eight All-District Academic Team members, the eight straight NCAA Tournament appearances, the four Academic All-America team members and the five Sweet 16 appearances. The foundation was a laid years ago during a humble upbringing in the oil mining town of Healdton, Okla. Those morals have stood as the roots of Oklahoma women s basketball for 11 years. Now they are flourishing on an elite level. So as the Sooners sit on the cusp of the 2007-08 season with the biggest national spotlight in program history already glaring in their eyes, Coale and company are sticking to their roots. And the success that comes with them.
