He allowed four hits, two of which came in the fifth inning, and two runs. He walked only one and struck out seven. The seven strikeouts are his second most in a single start with the Bats, after his high of 10 in a win against CHA on 7/28/15 at Louisville Slugger Field. His one walk also ties a career best with LOU, a mark he set on two different occasions last season, both at home (7/8 vs. IND, 7/28 vs. CHA). SAY CHEEEEEEESE AGAIN: LOU has committed at least one error in each of their first five games, totaling six. Last season, the Bats had four streaks of four games or more where they committed at least one error, including a season-high eight game streak from 4/29-5/6/15, where they committed 12 total. They finished with 117 errors in 2015. BULLPEN SOLID AS A ROCK: RHPs Layne Somsen and Dayan Diaz were solid in relief last night. After Stephenson retired the final three batters he faced, Somsen and Diaz combined to mow down nine in a row to close out the game, including four strikeouts. The pitching staff totaled 11 strikeouts last night, their highest total of the season and highest since 9/5/15 when they racked up 11 against COL. Through the season s first five games, the Bats bullpen has a 1.73 ERA, allowing just three earned runs (four runs total) in 15 and two-thirds innings pitched. Also, the 17 combined strikeouts last night (11 TOL, 6 LOU) is a season high. DH Wynton Bernard reached on a catcher s interference called on Ramon Cabrera. After stealing second, Bernard later scored on a 2B Thomas Field double. Field scored two batters later on a CH Cameron Maybin double to center field. It spoiled what was a solid night for LOU RHP Robert Stephenson, who rung up seven strikeouts and collected 17 swings and misses. STEPHENSON GOOD, BUT LOSES: RHP Robert Stephenson pitched six innings in his first LOU start of 2016. He allowed four hits, two of which came in the fifth inning, and two runs. He walked only one and struck out seven. The seven strikeouts are his second most in a single start with the Bats, after his high of 10 in a win against CHA on 7/28/15 at Louisville Slugger Field. They finished with 117 errors in 2015. O IN OFFENSE: LOU was shut out for the first time in 2016 and did not advance a runner past second base in last night s loss. Last season, the Bats were shut out 13 times in 2015, and the only time the Bats were shut out by TOL was a 13-0 Opening Day loss. Offensively, five Bats collected hits, led by LF Jesse Winker, who had two singles. It was the first time this season the Bats were without an extra-base hit. BULLPEN SOLID AS A ROCK: RHPs Layne Somsen and Dayan Diaz were solid in relief last night. After Stephenson retired the final three batters he faced, Somsen and Diaz combined to mow down nine in a row to close out the game, including four strikeouts. Also, the 17 combined strikeouts last night (11 TOL, 6 LOU) is a season high. RISP-Y BUISNESS: Last night, the Bats were 0-for-2 with RISP, and are now 9-for-35 (.257) with RISP. LOU s best games hitting with RISP came in the double-header against COL, where they were 3-for-8 in game one and 4-for-13 in game two, combining for a 7-for-21 mark (.333). Last year, LOU hit.232 with RISP. TOLLLLLLEDO: LOU lost their sixth game in a row to TOL, dating back to last season. LOU s last win against TOL came on 8/2 at Louisville Slugger Field, a 4-3, extra inning triumph. The six game slide is the longest against TOL since LOU lost six in a row (including five at TOL) from 7/9-20/14. WINKER ON POINT: LF Jesse Winker collected two more hits in last night s game. He is hitting.333 to start the season, with two multi-hit games, which is most on the team. In 18 at-bats, he has six hits, all singles. He has struck out just four times and has knocked in a pair of runs. The only game he has gone hitless this season was an 0-for-4 night Tuesday at COL. ANOTHER DEBUT A WEEK LATE: RHP Tim Adleman will make his Triple-A debut tonight, after a stellar 2015 at Double-A Pensacola. Adleman was scheduled to start last Friday, 4/8, at TOL, but that game was postponed due to poor weather. Adleman is coming off of his first career Major League Spring Training, where he made four appearances, including one start, posting an 0-1 record and a 22.85 ERA in four and one-third innings pitched. HOME COOKING: LOU picked up their first home win in their third game at Louisville Slugger Field in 2015, a 5-0 win over TOL. RHP Michael Lorenzen earned the win, and former Mud Hen, now a Cincinnati Reds RHP Tim Melville suffered the loss. The Bats sit at 2-3, the same record they had through their first five games in 2015.
