About Costa Rica Small land of Pura Vida - Spanish - Tico/Tica - Colones - Type A and B, 120 V WEATHER CHART Central pacific Central Valley Caribbean Coast Tamarindo Rincon de la Vieja Rio Celeste Liberia Samara Lake Arenal La Fortuna Monteverde Jaco NORTH PACIFIC OCEAN NICARAGUA Sarapiqui San Jose Manuel Antonio 0 100 miles 0 100 km COSTA RICA Cartago San Gerardo de Dota Uvita Corcovado Tortuguero Pacuare River CARIBBEAN SEA Puerto Limon WHERE IS COSTA RICA? Puerto Viejo PANAMA Costa Rica is a small Latin American country situated in Central America and not in South America as many people seem to believe! Costa Rica is bordered by Nicaragua, Panama, the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. While Costa Rica has more than 1200 km of coastline, its narrowest point from the Caribbean coast to the pacific coast only measures 120 km! Do not be fooled, Costa Rica may be a small country, but it is very diverse in terms of relief so it is not that easy and quick to get from one point to another. COSTA RICA s HIGHLIGHTS Arenal. Its perfect conical shape made it the most iconic volcano of Costa Rica. The lush vegetation that grow on its fertile plains have turned this area of Costa Rica into one of the most visited places in the country and there are a number of reasons why: great hiking trails, pristine rivers, hidden waterfalls and natural hot springs pools. Tortuguero. This small fishing village situated in the North Caribbean coast of the country is only accessible by boat or by plane. Getting there is in itself a wonderful experience. By boat, you get to travel a few hours surrounded by deep green jungles and you can observe countless wild animals on the way. The heat, the humidity and the sounds of the jungle will left you speechless. By plane, you get to see the jungle and its numerous water canals from up in the air; an unforgettable experience. This place is often called the small Amazonas. The beaches of Tortuguero are famous worldwide for turtles egglaying. Depending on the season you visit this natural paradise, you might have the chance to witness this incredible event. Corcovado: where the wild things are! This area is one of the most biodiverse place on earth. It is teeming with life. Many scientist visit the area and countless new plant, tree, insect, reptile and animal species are discovered each year. This place is relatively hard to get to as it is only accessible by boat or by plane. If you fancy exploring, pay a visit to the sumptuous Corcovado National Park. The park itself contains 2,5% of the biodiversity of the country. You should know that it can only be visited with a professional guide, but believe me it is worth it because you would not like to get lost and to have to spend the night into this deep impenetrable jungle. Sarapiqui. The rainforest of Sarapiqui is easily accessible by land from the capital city and can be reached in only two hours and a half and yet the climate and the landscape are totally different. It is a lovely rural area with small villages nestled in the rainforest. There are many amazing private reserves that can be visited and that offer interesting visits on different themes such as frogs of Costa Rica, nightwalks, or chocolate making. The Central Valley of Costa Rica is the most densely populated area of the country and offer a lot of interesting Costa Rica has only about 0.1% of the world s landmass, but it contains 5% of the world s biodiversity. Around 25% of the country s land area is in protected national parks and protected areas, being the largest percentage of protected areas in the world. 4 www.greenworldadventures.com / info@gwacr.com / +1 (347) 759-6197 www.greenworldadventures.com / info@gwacr.com / +1 (347) 759-6197 5

opportunities to get an insight into the Costa Rican culture and its rich traditions. The cities of San José, Heredia, Alajuela and Cartago are very lively. There is always something happening and there are many different museums that are really worth it like the Gold Museum in San José for example. The Central Valley is also home to numerous volcanoes (Poas, Turrialba and Irazu) and to the pretty Orosi Valley. Manuel Antonio is the most popular national park of Costa Rica. The scenery is splendid and its beautiful pristine white beaches are ideal to take a rest after having walked all the trails the park has to offer. This park is often considered as the place to see sloth as quite a lot of them live up in the tall trees of the park and are easily observable with a good pair of binoculars.you can also spot three different types of monkeys, wild deers, lots of different colorful bird species and beautiful black and green iguanas. The Celeste River. The majestic deep blue Celeste river will enchant you. The color contrast between the green lush rainforest that borders the river and the deep quasi fluorescent blue water is striking. The Rincon de la Vieja volcano. This fascinating volcano is situated in North Guanacaste. Nature at its best: great hiking trails, numerous rivers and natural hot and cold pools, mud volcanoes Not as visited as the other volcanos of Costa Rica because of its location, you can enjoy some of the activities offered there all by yourself! Puerto Viejo de Limon: reggae, crystal clear waters, sandy beaches and palm trees. Some might call it heaven but it is locally know as South Caribbean Costa Rica. Puerto Viejo is home to the one and only sloth refuge in the country. You might want to pop by if you have missed your chance to see one of these cuties in the wild. Jaco: a surfing and party heaven! If you are into party and beach holidays, you should not miss Jaco beach. It is frequented by both locals and foreigners all year long and its waves are ideal to start your amateur surfing career. Monteverde. The cloudy and mysterious Monteverde cloud forest if a must see while in Costa Rica. This mystical cloud forest is a very interesting biodiversity reserve. The quetzal, the most iconic bird of Costa Rica nestle in the few cloud forests of the country. If you are patient enough, your chances to spot one here are relatively high. The countless epiphyte plants and the invasive moss that cover the threes of this amazing rainforest will make you feel like you are penetrating a long lost world in which Mother Nature only rules. La Zona de los Santos. A mountainous zone covered with coffee plantations. The best coffees of Costa Rica are produced in this region. The small villages of la Zona de Los Santos saints are tranquils and colourful. A beautiful rural area that contrasts with the rest of Costa Rica s must see. Visiting indigenous communities. Costa Rica is home to numerous indigenous communities that have been struggling daily to protect their own languages, cultures and traditions ever since the Spanish settled in the country. Most of the Costa Rican indigenous communities now live is protected reserve as a result of a 1977 government law aimed at preserving their land and culture. Most of the reserves can be visited but most of the time you have to take a guide to show you around. Rafting over the Pacuare River. The Pacuare river is often considered as one of the best rivers in the world for white-water Rafting. This is a great experience to enjoy the stunning views over the surrounding lush rainforest. The Nicoya Peninsula: surf, pristine beaches and yoga. The Nicoya Peninsula probably offers the most beautiful beaches of the country. Some of them are very popular surfing destinations, others are still very natural and unspoilt because of their secluded locations. Nicoya is famous for being a blue zone which means that people who live in this area of Costa Rica usually live longer than the rest of Costa Ricans and even humans in general! Their healthy stressless lifestyles may be the clue to this miracle. Uvita: white sandy beaches, wild waterfalls hidden in the jungle, snorkelling, whale watching and surfing. These are the most popular activities that you can do in this paradise located at the South Pacific of Costa Rica. The ideal location for a less crowded and laid back beach holiday in Costa Rica. Volcanoes. Costa Rica is part of the Pacific Fire Ring Circle. It is a very volcanic country and over 200 volcanic formations have been identified on its territory. Less than a dozen of them are considered as active volcanoes. The most visited volcanoes of the country (and also the most impressive) are the Poas, Arenal, Irazú, Turrialba, Miravalles, Tenorio, Barva, Rincón de la Vieja and the Orosi volcano. TURTLE NESTING: Guanacaste & North Pacific Leatherback turtles. Best Time to Visit: nesting season runs October-March. Nicoya Peninsula Best Time to Visit: You can spot turtles yearround, but the famed Olive Ridley arribadas are most frequent June-December. Central Pacific Ballena National Marine Park, located south of Dominical, hosts nesting hawksbill and Olive Ridley turtles Best Time to Visit: May-November. Osa Peninsula & South Pacific Black sea turtles. Best Time to Visit: Year-round. North Caribbean Green Sea Turtles. Best Time to Visit: March through October; July-October is peak season for green sea turtles. South Caribbean Leatherback and hawksbill sea turtles. Best Time to Visit: Year-round, although peak nesting season runs April through October. WHALE WATCHING: Guanacaste & North Pacific & Central and South Pacific California Humpback Whales. Best Time to Visit: watching humpback season runs December-April. North Pacific, Central Pacific & South Pacific Antarctic Humpback Whales. Best Time to watch: Antarctic Humpback season runs July-November. North Caribbean North Atlantic St. Lawrence Humpback Whales. Best Time to watch: December through March. DOLPHIN WATCHING: Caribbean Coast & North Pacific, Jaco, Manuel Antonio, Uvita and Osa Peninsula Spotted Dolphin, Bottlenose Dolphin, Spinner Dolphin, Rough-Toothed Dolphin, Common Dolphin.
