She has earned nine varsity letters in basketball, volleyball and track & field. Hoover was ranked 24th in the preseason by TexasHoops.com. BEARS DISPLAY NEW UNIFORMS Northern Colorado is wearing new white uniforms at home this season. So far, it has served the team well as it is a perfect 1-0. NO BACKING DOWN HERE Although Northern Colorado is still in its infant stages of being a Division I program, it is not shying away from tough competition. The Bears are taking on seven teams that participated in the NCAA or WNIT tournament last season. Those teams include Louisville (NCAA), Maryland (NCAA), Illinois (WNIT), Marquette (WNIT), Gonzaga (WNIT), and twice against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (WNIT). 2005-06 University of Northern Colorado Bears Women s Basketball DANDY DEBUT Freshman Jabrenta Hubbard scored 17 points in her collegiate debut against Air Force on Nov. 18. The guard from Las Vegas was 7-of-12 from the field, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Hubbard was ranked the 38th-best high school player in the nation by NCAAFullCourt.com in 2004 and was a top-ranked player in the West region by Street & Smith s that same year. THE COMEBACK KID Junior Heather Barbour scored 11 points against Air Force. Barbour had been hampered by leg injuries the past two years. Before the game against the Falcons, she hadn t played in regular season action since Jan. 8, 2005, against Utah. RULE CHANGE Fans may notice a difference with the kicking rule this year. Before, the shot would reset to 30 seconds when the ball was kicked. The NCAA changed the rule to say the shot clock will reset to 15 seconds when there are less than 15 seconds left on the shot clock when the ball is kicked. When there are more than 15 seconds remaining on the shot clock, the time will stay the same. TRIFECTARIFIC The Bears 8.6 3-pointers per game last season would have tied for fourth-best in the nation, but because of the reclassification, they are not part of official Division I statistical categories until the transition is over. ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGH Northern Colorado is 161-91 (.757) all-time against teams from Colorado. HOT STREAK The Bears went 9-3 in their last 12 games last season after starting out 3-13. At the end of that stretch, Northern Colorado went 2-1 at the Division I Indepedent tournament in Orem, Utah, and finished as the runner up. AGAINST THE MOUNTAIN WEST The Bears are 32-64 since 1974-75 against teams from the Mountain West. Northern Colorado went 0-6 against MWC teams last season. BEARS WIN EXHIBITION The Bears took down Colorado Mines 63-56 in an exhibition on Nov. 8. Although Northern Colorado shot just 24 percent in the first half, it rebounded in the second half to shoot 41 percent. The Bears played stellar defense, forcing 28 turnovers. GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION Newcomer Jabrenta Hubbard scored 12 points, dished out a game-high eight assists and grabbed five steals in her first game action in a Northern Colorado uniform. Hubbard averaged 20.3 points and 3.5 assists per game as a high school senior in Las Vegas. NORTHERN COLORADO COACHES SHOW NOW ON WEDNESDAY Fans can now join Ron Vlasin and other Northern Colorado coaches at noon on Wednesdays at Old Chicago (2349 W. 29th St., next to Red Lobster). The show is open to the public and lunch is only $7, which includes a salad and drink. Troy Coverdale serves as the host, and the show airs at 7 p.m. that night on 1310-AM KFKA.

(Clune Arena) COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Northern Colorado women s basketball team lost a nail biter to the Air Force Falcons at Clune Arena on Friday, 67-60. Despite being out-rebounded 43-24, the Bears put themselves in position to win the game in the second half. Northern Colorado used the slick shooting of freshman Jabrenta Hubbard, junior Heather Barbour and junior Melanie Drangmeister in a 10-4 run to take a 55-53 lead with 5:41 to go in the game. But the Bears could not overcome the inside and free throw shooting of Air Force, as the Falcons went on a 10-3 run to close out the game. Hubbard lit up the arena for a game-high 17 points on 7- of-12 shooting (3-4 from 3-point range) in her collegiate debut. Barbour chipped in with 11 points in her first official game action since coming off a leg injury from last season. Danielle Hagen also had 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds. The Bears (0-1) got a tough start to the game, shooting 1- for-4 and turning the ball over three times in the first four minutes. Air Force took its largest lead in the first half at 23-11 with 7:21 left in the first half. The Bears cut the Falcons lead to 30-25 after Drangmeister sunk a 3-pointer and sophomore Dani Veal laid it up. Air Force closed the half on a jumper from Alecia Steele and free throws from Jamie Davis to take a 34-25 lead. Turnovers were abundant in the first half, as both teams had a combined 36 turnovers, with Northern Colorado committing 17 compared to Air Force s 19. The Bears shot 4-of-16 from beyond the arc in the half. Hubbard shot a perfect 4-for-4 in the first half, including 3-for-3 from the 3-point line. In the second half, Barbour got things rolling as her 3- pointer knotted the game at 39. From that point the game was neck-and-neck. After the Bears took the lead later in the half, it looked as if they had the momentum going their way, but a turnover by the Bears helped the Falcons fight back to tie it up at 57. Air Force took a 66-58 lead with 18 seconds remaining, but the Bears refused to quit. Hubbard scored a quick two with nine seconds left to make it a two possession game, however the Bears could not find enough time for their comeback. Northern Colorado shot 47 percent in the second half, which topped Air Force s 28 percent. But Air Force was able to win the free throw battle, going 25-32 from the line, compared with Northern Colorado s 10-18. Game Two -Northern Colorado vs. Cal State-Fullerton Nov. 20, 2005 - Greeley, Colo. (Butler-Hancock S.P.) GREELEY, Colo. - The University of Northern Colorado women s basketball team blasted the Cal State-Fullerton Titans 88-64 on Sunday at Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion. It was the largest win for Northern Colorado over a Division I school since 1976. Junior guard Jena Fosdick had a game-high 26 points (9- of-14 shooting) and eight rebounds, which ties her careerhigh. Junior forward Heather Barbour chipped in with a career-best 21 points. The Bears (1-1) shot 40 percent from 3-point range (13-32) and out-rebounded the Titans 47-28. Northern Colorado shot 51 percent from the field, its best showing since Dec. 6, 2003 in a 103-61 win over New York Tech. The Bears were a smaller team than the Titans, but on defense Northern Colorado shut down Fullerton s scoring in the post, holding CSF center Amber Pruitt to just nine points on 3-of-9 shooting. The only time the Titans led was in the first minute of the game, but a 14-0 run put the Bears up 14-4. Fullerton cut the lead to 14-12 with 13:41 remaining in the first half, but it could not keep pace with Northern Colorado as the Bears outscored the Titans 28-18 to close out the half. Barbour scored 15 points while junior center Danielle Hagen grabbed 10 of her careerhigh 16 rebounds in the half. In the second half, it was all Northern Colorado. The closest CSF got to Northern Colorado s lead in the half was 10 points. The Titans cut the Bears lead to 67-57 with 6:10 left to play, but Northern Colorado clawed back by going on a 21-7 run to close out the game. Freshman Jabrenta Hubbard continued her exceptional play as she scored 18 points and dished out five assists. Sophomore center Dani Veal had a career-high three assists. 2005-06 University of Northern Colorado Bears Women s Basketball Making The Transition NORTHERN COLORADO TO JOIN BIG SKY CONFERENCE The presidents of the eight Big Sky Conference institutions voted on May 17, 2005, to add the University of Northern Colorado as the league's ninth member. The University of Northern Colorado will officially join the Big Sky Conference on July 1, 2006, and begin athletic competition in August of 2006. The Big Sky will be comprised of Northern Colorado, Eastern Washington University, Idaho State University, The University of Montana, Montana State University, Northern Arizona University, Portland State University, Sacramento State University and Weber State University. "In Northern Colorado, we've found an institution that fits the footprint of the Big Sky Conference,'' said Big Sky Conference Commissioner Doug Fullerton. "Northern Colorado is very similar to the other schools in our conference. It is a school with a great academic and athletic tradition, and fits both geographically and academically. "Northern Colorado is committed to the Big Sky and we've already developed a great partnership Our presidents were very impressed with Northern Colorado from the beginning of this process, and are excited about the future of our league with the addition.'' "We're thrilled to join a conference in our region that is not only firstrate in athletics, but also made up of stellar academic institutions," UNC President Kay Norton said. As part of its agreement for membership in the Big Sky, Northern Colorado will add men's and women's indoor track and field, as well as men's cross country. UNC has also agreed to fund 63 football scholarships by the 2007 season. Northern Colorado will compete in a full regular-season Big Sky schedule in 2006-07. UNC will face certain restrictions competing in Big Sky Championships where an automatic bid to an NCAA tournament is at stake until it is fully eligible to accept an automatic berth. "The competition level in the conference is high, but we feel our program is in a good position to be competitive right away," Northern Colorado Director of Athletics Jay S. Hinrichs said. "Our goal is to compete for conference championships in the near future." In December 2004, the Big Sky institution presidents decided to take a closer look at adding Northern Colorado. A team of Big Sky representatives visited the Greeley campus in early February, and completed a site visitation report that was presented to the presidents. The Big Sky is expanding for the first time since the summer of 1996 when Sacramento State, Portland State and Cal State Northridge were added after Boise State and the University of Idaho left the conference. Northridge joined the Big West following the 2000-01 season. The Big Sky Conference was established in 1963 by six charter members: Idaho, Idaho State, Gonzaga, Montana, Montana State and Weber State. The Big Sky currently sponsors championships in 13 sports: Football, men's and women's basketball, cross country, indoor and outdoor track, tennis, women's soccer, women's golf and women's volleyball.
