Edinboro (5-1, 3-0 PSAC West) at IUP (3-3, 0-3 PSAC West) October 10, 2009 ** 2:00 p.m. ** Miller Stadium ** Indiana, Pa. The Game: IUP enters its homecoming game on its first three-game losing streak and 0-3 start in the PSAC West since 1982. Losses to Mercyhurst and Slippery Rock by a total of eight points were followed by a 41-28 setback to California last Saturday in the inaugural Coal Bowl game. The road doesn t get any easier this week when nationally-ranked Edinboro brings its prolific passing attack led by two-time PSAC West Offensive Player of the Year and 2008 Harlon Hill finalist Trevor Harris to Miller Stadium. The Fighting Scots are tied with California in the PSAC West by defeating Slippery Rock, Gannon and Lock Haven. IUP head coach Lou Tepper has emerged from the rivalry game victorious five times in the past six years. He led the Fighting Scots to wins over IUP each year from 2003-05 and, after taking over at IUP, posted wins over Edinboro in 2006 and 2007 before the Fighting Scots won 24-17 last season at Sox Harrison Stadium. Regional and National Rankings: Edinboro is ranked third in the first Super Regional One poll of the season. The Fighting Scots are No. 13 nationally in the American Football Coaches Association poll and No. 19 in D2Football.com. IUP had reached as high as No. 13 in the poll D2Football.com and No. 21 in the AFCA poll before its three-game losing streak began at Mercyhurst. His overall record is 93-67-2, including marks of 25-31-2 at Illinois and 40-26 at Edinboro. Tepper is in his 43rd year as a college coach dating back to the 1967 season when he was a graduate assistant at Pitt. He spent a total of 28 seasons as an assistant coach at New Hampshire, Williams & Mary, Virginia Tech, Colorado, Illinois and LSU. In 2007, Tepper led the Crimson Hawks to their first playoff berth since 2002, winning at West Chester 45-35 in the opening round before losing 41-34 at Shepherd in the Northeast Region semifinals. He was the PSAC West Coach of the Year in his first season at IUP in 2006 when the team went 8-2 and shared the PSAC West title after being picked to finish fourth in the preseason poll. Lou Tepper coached at Edinboro from 2000-05 and went 3-3 versus IUP, including wins in each of his final three seasons there. After coming to IUP, Tepper has led the Crimson Hawks to wins in 2006 (23-20 in overtime) and 2007 (27-7) before last year s defeat. Last Week: IUP lost to California for the third straight season and fell to 0-3 in the PSAC West for the first time since 1982 with a 41-28 defeat last Saturday at Miller Stadium. Josh Portis threw four touchdown passes, including two each to A.J. Jackson and Terrance Moore to lead the Vulcans to the win. Pat Smith made his first career start in place of an injured Andrew Krewatch and completed 17 of 32 passes for 176 yards and a three-yard touchdown to Javon Rowan. Smith also rushed for 33 yards and scored a touchdown on the ground. Tobias Robinson carried 25 times for 99 yards and Harvie Tuck, who has emerged as the No. 2 tailback over the past two weeks, gained 30 yards and had a touchdown. Craig Burgess made all four extra points to run his streak to 74 in a row. The Crimson Hawks trailed by scores of 14-0 and 24-7 in the first half before a 10-play, 74-yard scoring drive at the outset of the third quarter make it 24-14. But the Vulcans scored the next 17 points and only two late IUP touchdowns made the final more respectable.

Last Year vs. Edinboro: IUP wiped out a 17-0 deficit in a span of 6:47 in the fourth quarter before Edinboro pulled out a 24-17 victory on a fourth down 35-yard touchdown pass from Trevor Harris to Gary Nolen with 4:39 remaining. The loss was the first in three games for Lou Tepper versus the team he coached from 2000-05. Harris completed 26 of 36 passes for 290 yards while Ulysee Davis rushed for 73 yards and a pair of first half touchdowns that gave Edinboro a 14-0 lead. The Fighting Scots made it 17-0 on a 39-yard field goal by Merle Bouchat late in the third quarter. The Crimson Hawk offense came after the Bouchat field goal, driving 65 and 80 yards and scoring on a touchdown pass of 16 yards from Andrew Krewatch to Garrett Lestochi and a seven-yard scramble by Krewatch. After a second straight three and out by Edinboro, IUP tied it up on a 36-yard field goal by Craig Burgess with 8:06 left. Krewatch completed 22 of 38 passes for 313 yards. He was intercepted once and sacked five times. The Fighting Scot defense held Tobias Robinson and the IUP ground game in check, with Robinson gaining only 29 yards and the Crimson Hawks producing just 30 as a team. A New Quarterback: With the shoulder injury to four-year starter Andrew Krewatch, redshirt freshman Pat Smith made his second career appearance and first start at quarterback versus California. Smith is the first player other than Krewatch and Kevin Weidl to start at quarterback for IUP since Brian Eyerman played his last game versus Grand Valley State in the 2002 playoffs. Weidl started every game in 2003, 2004 and 2006. He missed the 2005 season while serving a university suspension. Krewatch was the starter as a true freshman in 2005 and started every game in 2007 and 2008 and the first five this season. Andrew Krewatch: Should Andrew Krewatch return this season, he still has a chance to break Brian Eyerman s career record for passing yards. Krewatch has 8,220 yards and needs 190 to take over the top spot. He already holds IUP career records for completions with 638 and attempts with 1,135 and is second to Eyerman with 69 touchdown passes. As a sophomore in 2007, Krewatch set IUP season records with 391 attempts, 237 completions and 3,100 yards and threw 29 touchdown passes, second only to Eyerman s 36 in 2002. He had a streak of 32 consecutive games with a touchdown pass snapped at Slippery Rock two weeks ago. Tobias Robinson: Junior tailback Tobias Robinson leads the PSAC and ranks 19 th in the nation with an average of 102.0 rushing yards per game. He is the only running back in the conference averaging better than 100 yards per contest. Robinson has five touchdown runs of 77 or more yards in his career, including an 83-yarder versus Millersville earlier this season. He also had scoring runs of 85, 84, 79 and 77 yards a year ago when he led the PSAC and ranked eighth in the nation in rushing with an average of 120.3 yards per game while scoring 13 touchdowns. Robinson twice eclipsed the 200-yard mark in 2008. He ran for 229 yards versus Clarion, tied for the fifth-highest total in school history, and had 215 versus Kutztown to become the first IUP running back to have a pair of 200-yard games in a season since James Suber in 1996. Robinson ranks 13 th in IUP history with a career total of 1,885 rushing yards. He trails Dave Cessa by 31 yards and Dan Cox by 51 to move up to 11 th. He has been projected as a potential first day selection in the April 2010 draft. Owusu-Ansah was named to the D2Football.com All-America second team last season after leading the PSAC with eight interceptions, including seven in the final four games of the year, and placing second in the nation with an average of 0.80 picks per game. Owusu-Ansah has been a big playmaker in his career for the Crimson Hawks. He has an 89-yard kickoff return for a touchdown versus Southern Connecticut State and 53-yard punt return for a score last week versus California. He also has interceptions that helped seal wins over Southern Connecticut State and C.W. Post. Owusu-Ansah has scored six touchdowns by four different methods in his career. He has returned two kickoffs and two punts as well as one interception and one fumble for touchdowns. Craig Burgess: Junior kicker Craig Burgess brings a streak of 74 consecutive made extra points into Saturday s game. He was perfect in 46 attempts last season, the most without a miss in one season in school history, and is 91 of 92 in his career, the fifth most makes in IUP annals. Burgess is also 4 for 4 in field goal attempts this season and 26 of 34 in three seasons at IUP. He is third in school history in field goals made, three behind Josh Telenko and four shy of all-time leader John Sandstrom. Burgess tied a school record when he made four field goals last season versus Gannon. Burgess has made his last 10 field goal attempts and is tied with Nick Wallace for the most consecutive makes in school history. Mychal Skinner: Junior wide receiver Mychal Skinner needs seven more receptions to become the 14 th player in IUP history to reach 100 in a career. Skinner ranks 13 th in career receiving yards with 1,556 and has scored 12 touchdowns. Andre Henderson Remains Out: Junior free safety Andre Henderson will miss his third straight game Saturday after suffering a shoulder injury versus Mercyhurst. There is no timetable set for his return to the lineup. Despite only playing in four of six games, Henderson still ranks third on the team with 33 tackles.

Defensive Shuffling: With the injury to Andre Henderson, the IUP defensive coaches were forced to make some adjustments to the secondary. Sophomore Abe Satterfield, who started the season at drop linebacker, moved to a cornerback position while senior Myke Wells shifted to Henderson s free safety spot. Senior Thomas Lindsay took over for Satterfield at drop linebacker. However, Lindsay injured an ankle versus California and is questionable for Saturday s game. If he is unable to play, Satterfield will move back to drop linebacker and junior Neil James will likely step into the starting lineup at cornerback. IUP on Homecoming: IUP is 3-0 in homecoming games under Lou Tepper, including a 23-16 double overtime win over Slippery Rock last year, and has won five in a row beginning with the 2004 season. The last loss in a homecoming contest was a 28-20 defeat to a Tepper-led Edinboro team in 2003. Dating back to the 1984 season, IUP has won 22 of its past 25 homecoming games. 3-3 Record: IUP has not been 3-3 since the 2005 season and finished that year with a 5-5 record in Frank Cignetti s final season as head coach. Prior to that, IUP was 3-3 in 1999 but rebounded to win its last four regular season games and qualify for the playoffs, eventually extended its winning streak to six with victories over Slippery Rock and Millersville before losing to Northwest Missouri State in the national semifinals. IUP in the PSAC West: For the majority of the past 25 years, IUP has been the dominant program in the PSAC West, compiling a record of 131-22-1 in division play since 1984 and winning or sharing the championship 17 times. From 1985-94, IUP lost only two of 60 division games. IUP went 6-0 in the PSAC West in 1985, 1986, 1987, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1994, 2001 and 2002 and were 5-0-1 in 1992. Non-Losing Seasons: With a record of 3-3 so far this season, the Crimson Hawks need to win at least three of their final five games to extend their streak of consecutive non-losing seasons to 27. IUP is 230-70-2 over that span. That stretch includes 23 winning seasons and 5-5 records in 1983, 1987 and 2005. IUP has not had a losing season since going 4-6 in 1982. IUP won a school record 13 games in 1993, losing only in the national championship game to North Alabama. IUP won 12 times twice (1990 and 1991), had 11 victories twice (1989 and 2002) and had 10 wins four times (1987, 1994, 1998 and 2003). IUP in the NCAA Playoffs: IUP has qualified for the NCAA playoffs 14 times since 1987 and has a record of 16-14 in postseason play. IUP advanced to the national semifinals six times in a span of 11 years (1989-91, 1993-94, 1999) and played for the national championship in 1990 and 1993. Overtime Games: A 23-16 double overtime win over Slippery Rock last season kept IUP perfect at 7-0 in overtime games since the rule was adopted in 1998. The Slippery Rock game marked the first time an IUP game went past one overtime period and was also the first one played at Miller Stadium. Shutouts: The IUP defense has at least one shutout in 20 of the past 27 seasons with a total of 36 shutouts over that span. The Crimson Hawks had one blanking last season, a 41-0 victory at C.W. Post in the opener, and have three in Lou Tepper s three seasons as head coach. IUP shut out Millersville 45-0 and Shippensburg 30-0 in 2007. Next Week: IUP plays the first of two straight road games next Saturday at Lock Haven. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. The following week the Crimson Hawks are at Clarion before concluding their home schedule with an October 31 date versus Gannon.
