See inside for details! january ski trails deadline Thursday, December 6th Check for updates at www.fdsc.org What is your favorite Ski Town? Stowe, VT? Breckenridge, CO? My personal favorite, Bend, OR? What makes them special to you? Do you have that memory of an amazing day on the slopes, a magical snowy night walking downtown for dinner? I ll wager part of the appeal was the people that you met, the folks that do whatever is necessary to be part of that environment. Incredibly passionate folks, who love what they do, where they are, and give off positive vibes so strong that you can t help but share their enthusiasm. Where am I going with this? We may not live in the ideal ski town environment, but we can be a Community that affects the people around us. The Flying Dutchmen are the embodiment of the skiing lifestyle in this neighborhood. We can be the best ambassadors of the sport that we love so much. Wear your enthusiasm proudly, talk about it to your friends, and let them know what it s like to feel the spiritual connection to the mountains. What it feels like to glide down that perfectly groomed run. Our club is at a crossroads, like many organizations. Are we still relevant? How do we attract new members? How do we get our existing members and families to be more actively involved? We are trying new things like our Meet-up Group; we are investigating new social events, and are looking for ideas from you, our loyal members. But why not be one of the folks that gives off those positive vibes, shares their love of our sport, and reinvigorates our community. Reading may never be someone s favorite Ski Town, but being a Flying Dutchmen could make it a nicer place to be. See you on the slopes Dave McFarland President Membership Meetings are now held at the EVERGREEN COUNTRY CLUB at 7:30pm every first Thursday of the month April through August and every first and third Thursday of the month from September through March. As a group, the Dutchmen are thankful for skiing (and many other activities), friendship and loyalty to a wonderful club. Currently, we have 407 members, 235 of which are families. The best news is that several of our most recent members joined the club at community events such as Buckman s Tent Sale and Guts to Glory. A few others took advantage of our free drink offer at Winter Sports Night. Even our Meetup group has brought in new faces. The club is growing thanks to you and your enthusiasm for all we are and do. An exciting new resource will debut on our website very soon. The first edition of the FDSC online directory has about 15 listings in a variety of categories. Follow the link to add your talent, business, craft, service, etc. to this valuable publication. https://goo.gl/forms/ji33s66e0vzev6hb2 2019 is a fantastic year to be a Dutchmen. We are turning 60 and that is cause for celebration. Look for more details about our anniversary party which will be held at the Double Tree Hotel on October 19, 2019. The committee is Diane Nolfe working hard to plan a spectacular event and YOU ARE INVITED! Membership Director Greetings all Our ski season is finally underway! trips Hello Skiers! Time is waning to sign up for trips. First Tracks and Sunday River had to give up rooms and are closed. Later trips are still open so act now! Elk Day Trip, Greek Peak and Jay Peak all still need skiers. Check the trip log and contact them now. Parking for trips will remain at First Energy Stadium. Please park in a single line next to Carpenter Technology across from the 3rd base side of stadium. The Trip Committee has recently met to plan travel for 2020. WOW, I know it s soon 2020! Thanks to all of you who completed the survey at Winter Sports Night and on line. Top vote getters were Lake Tahoe area, Taos-New Mexico, Jackson Hole, Big Sky, Whitefish-Montana, and Mt. Tremblant-Quebec. We can t fill everyone s wish in one year, but will try to get a good start. Bob Fehl Trips past president There are a lot of options for discount skiing this season. There s a full page of information in this issue, but let me highlight what s new. We have extended options for Bear Creek, and the cost of a 6-session pass dropped $10 from last year. We have on-line accounts with Bear Creek, JFBB and Mt. Snow for ticket purchases. You can get the login and password from me or any Board member. Blue Mt. is still using paper tickets; you can purchase them at Fehl s or at a meeting. Please respect our ticket program rules. Tickets are for members only. If you are buying tickets for family members, you should have a Family membership. Some of our tickets are subsidized by your dues, and the other discounts are a benefit to being a member of the Club. Lastly, I monitor Bear Creek purchases in order for us to rebate you for 6-session and season pass purchases made through our portal (if you are also involved in our lesson program). If you purchased passes at the end of the season directly from Bear Creek and are taking lessons, please let me know so that we can issue your rebate. Paul Schwartz Skimeister Greetings Riders and Sliders! By the time you are reading this, I know at least a few of us will have had their first chance to get back on the snow! We saw a bunch of new faces at Winter Sports Night and enjoyed chatting with you and sharing the enthusiasm we have for winter activity.
