After falling behind early, 4-0, Samford (1-0) went on a 10-2 run to take a 10-6 lead with 13:46 to go in the first half on a layup by Insell. The game stayed close through most of the first half before Samford went on a 14-1 run during the final 6:46 of the first half to take a 31-17 lead over Alcorn State (0-1) into the locker room. The Bulldogs began the second half with a 7-2 run to push its lead to 19 at 38-19 with 16:22 left in the game. Samford went on to lead by as much as 25 points in the second half at 51-26 with 8:25 to go, though Alcorn State ended the game by outscoring the Bulldogs, 15-6, to make the final score 57-41. Samford was led by Insell s 21 points, and freshman Alex Munday scored 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in her collegiate debut. Samford fell behind early in the first half, trailing Troy State by as much as six points, but the Bulldogs went on an 11-0 run to take a 19-14 lead on a three-pointer by Smith with 6:44 to go in the first half. Samford extended its lead to nine by halftime, as the Bulldogs took a 30-21 lead into the locker room. Samford maintained its lead throughout the second half. The Bulldogs pushed the lead to 11 points at 41-30 with 12:24 to go on a three-pointer by Chelsee Insell, and then again at 43-32 on a jumper by Ché Walker with 9:41 left in the game. Troy State got no closer than six points the rest of the way, as Samford came away with the 51-41 victory. The win gives Samford the best start in the history of the program, which is in its seventh season. Smith was the only player in double figures for Samford. Lindsey Harris scored nine points, and Alex Munday and Insell scored seven apiece for the Bulldogs. For Troy State, Kim McGriff scored 16 points and pulled down five rebounds. I thought we played hard, Samford Head Coach Mike Morris said. I was disappointed in our execution and poise. Effort-wise, we were okay, but we weren t consistent with our poise and execution. Samford (2-1) jumped out quickly and grabbed an early 5-2 lead with junior guard Lindsey Harris scoring the first five points for the Bulldogs. Vanderbilt (3-0) then went on a 16-3 run to take an 18-8 lead with 12:08 to go in the first half on a layup by Dee Davis. Vanderbilt pushed its lead to as much as 19 in the first half at 34-15 with 3:52 left, but Samford closed the half with a 7-0 run, and Vanderbilt led 34-22 at halftime. In the second half, after Vanderbilt extended its lead to 19 at 45-26, Samford cut the advantage to 14 at 45-31 with 13:56 to go in the game on a jumper by sophomore guard Cora Beth Smith. The Commodores then went on a 17-4 run to make the score 62-35. Samford finished the game by outscoring the Commodores, 15-5, to make the final score 67-50. Samford was led by Harris with 16 points. The game was close through most of the first half with neither team leading by more than four points. Samford took a one-point lead at 36-35 with 3:15 to go in the half on a jumper by Chelsee Insell. Princeton then scored the final eight points of the half to lead, 43-36, at halftime. Princeton opened the second half by scoring the first seven points to lead, 50-36, with 16:43 left in the game on a pair of free throws by Becky Brown. The Tigers pushed their lead to 29 points on three occasions in the second half. Samford got as close as 21 at 79-58 with 56 seconds remaining on a free throw by Alex Munday, but Princeton scored the last five points of the game to make the final score 84-58. Samford was led by Munday with 16 points. Insell scored 14 for the Bulldogs and was the team s leader in rebounds with six. Brown led Princeton with 20 points. I am so proud of this team as a unit, Head Coach Mike Morris said. I challenged them before the game that this game would come down to who wanted it the most. I hope we are developing the kind of mentality to come on the road and win games like this regularly. It was a great team effort. The first half began with the two teams trading baskets until Samford (4-2), trailing 6-5, went on a 13-0 run to take an 18-6 lead with 12:53 to go in the first half on a basket by Lindsey Harris. Samford maintained the lead through the rest of the half. Jacksonville (2-3) cut the lead to six at 33-27 with 1:50 left in the half, but Samford scored five of the final seven points of the half, and the Bulldogs held a 38-29 lead at the half. The lead stayed the same until Samford went on a 7-0 run early in the second half to build a 52-36 lead with 9:12 to go on a basket by Munday. Jacksonville cut the lead to four at 58-54 with 1:42 to go in the game on a three-pointer by Lexie Richards. However, Samford put the game away late with clutch free throws by Chelsee Insell, Cora Beth Smith and Harris, as the Bulldogs pulled out the 64-56 win. Samford (5-2) cut the lead to four on a jumper by Munday with 1:32 left in the half, but a UNCA free throw by Velinda Vuncannon with four seconds left gave the visitors a 26-21 lead at the half. The two teams traded baskets early on before Louisiana Monroe (4-5) grabbed a 7-2 lead on a free throw by Mindy Livaudais with 16:45 to go in the first half. Samford (5-3) quickly cut the lead to two at 7-5 on a three-pointer by senior forward Giovanni Price on the next possession. The Lady Indians then pushed the lead to 13-5 with a 6-0 run at the 14:19 mark in the opening period. Samford cut the lead to two again at the 2:54 mark in the first half with a 7-2 run to make the score 24-22 on a jumper by LaBrena Friend. Southern Miss is a very good team, and they did a great job, Samford Head Couch Mike Morris said. I was disappointed in terms of our execution. I thought we were playing well, but it just stopped with about five minutes left in the game. Samford (6-4) started the game with a 6-0 run on a jumper by junior guard Lindsey Harris and two baskets by freshman forward Alex Munday. Southern Miss (11-1) answered with an 8-1 run to take an 8-7 lead with 10:13 left in the first half on a three-pointer by Lana Lewis. Samford quickly took the lead back at 10-8 on a three-pointer by sophomore forward Morgan Vickery at the 9:53 mark in the half. Vickery s basket started an 11-0 run for the Bulldogs, giving Samford an 18-8 lead with 6:06 left in the first half. Southern Miss scored the next 10 points to tie the game at 18-18 on a layup by Deondra Carter at the 2:01 mark in the opening period. The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half, and the game was tied, 22-22, at halftime. USM opened the second half with a 5-0 run to take a 27-22 lead on a three-pointer by Carter with 17:23 left in the contest. Samford came back with a 5-0 run of its own to tie the game on a jumper by Munday with 15:52 to go. The game stayed close for most of the second half with neither team able to grab a sizable advantage. With Samford trailing, 47-42, with 5:57 to go, the Bulldogs scored five-straight points to tie the game at 47-47 with 4:52 left. Southern Miss then took over, ending the game with its 16-0 run to make the final score 63-47. For the game, Samford was led by Munday with 16 points and five rebounds. It was a great effort by our team, Samford Head Coach Mike Morris said. It was a learning experience. We fell behind early, but we responded well. Samford (7-5, 1-1 OVC) trailed most of the first half. The Bulldogs went 10 minutes without a field goal in the opening half, a drought broken by a three-pointer by sophomore guard Chelsee Insell with just over 3:00 to go to cut the Tennessee State (0-11, 0-2 OVC) lead to 19-14. Insell s basket started a 12-0 run to end the half and give Samford a 23-19 halftime lead. The last five points of the half were scored by Morgan Vickery. She hit two free throws with 26.5 seconds left, and then hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Bulldogs the four-point lead. Samford (7-6, 1-2 OVC) led most of the first half. The Bulldogs jumped on top early and pushed their lead to eight points at 16-8 on a three-pointer by Munday with 15:05 left in the first half. Murray State (5-9, 1-2 OVC) then answered with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to one at 16-15 with 12:37 to go on a jumper by Rebecca Remington. Alabama State (6-7) led the game early. The Lady Hornets led by as much as four points at 14-10 with 13:45 left in the first half. However, a 6-0 Samford (8-7) run gave the Bulldogs a 16-14 lead with 7:46 to go on two free throws by LaBrena Friend. Samford steadily increased its lead through the rest of the first half, and the Bulldogs led by nine at halftime, 37-28. Alabama State opened the second half with an 11-3 run to cut the Samford lead to one at 40-39 with 12:49 to go on a jumper by Nedra Thompson. It s always a good feeling to end the season with a win, Samford Head Coach Mike Morris said. The two teams traded baskets for the first part of the first half with neither team able to gain more than a three-point lead until Tennessee State (1-24, 0-15 OVC) went on a 7-0 run to take a 14-9 lead with 12:40 to go in the first half on a jumper by Kisha Stewart. Samford (10-17, 3-13 OVC) responded with a 12-0 run of its own to take the lead for good at 21-14 on a three-pointer by Insell. TSU fought back to cut the lead to three at 21-18, but Samford answered with a three-pointer by freshman forward Alex Munday with 6:28 remaining to give Samford a 24-18 lead. The teams traded baskets for the rest of the first half, and Samford took a 29-22 lead into halftime. Samford opened the second half by scoring seven of the first 10 points of the period to push its lead to 11 at 36-35 with 15:41 to go on a pair of free throws by Insell. The Bulldogs pulled away from there, increasing their lead to as much as 17 points at 48-31 with 8:27 to go in the game. Tennessee State got no closer than 14 points the rest of the way as Samford came away with the 60-45 victory. Following Insell for Samford, freshman forward Veronica Pike scored a career-high 14 points. In addition to her 27 points, Insell also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds on the night. Tennessee State was led by Kendra Bailey with eight points. Kasheena Powe led the Lady Tigers in rebounding with nine. www.samfordsports.com 39

OVC VALLEY CONFERENCE E ntering its 57th year, the Ohio Valley Conference continues to build on the success that has made it the nation s eighth-oldest NCAA Division I conference. In 2003, the OVC extended its geographical footprint into Alabama, expanding the league s membership to a record 11 institutions with the addition of Jacksonville State University and Samford University. The OVC dates back to 1948, but seeds for the new league were actually planted in 1941. It was then that Roy Stewart, the athletics director at Murray State, Charles (Turkey) Hughes, the athletics director at Eastern Kentucky, and Kelly Thompson, the public relations director at Western Kentucky, first broached the idea of forming a new conference. Discussions were put on hold by World War II but reemerged Feb. 27 28, 1948, at the Kentucky Hotel in Louisville as the three original institutions combined with Morehead State, Louisville and Evansville to form the OVC. In the 1950 s, the OVC became a pioneer on a much more significant scale. During times of racial segregation, league member Morehead State became one of the first nontraditionally black mid-southern institutions to accept a black student. In 1958, Marshall Banks earned athletically related aid at Morehead, which signed a second black athlete, Howard Murphy, a year later. In 1961, Murphy earned All-Conference recognition as a halfback in football. With racial barriers broken, the rest of the institutions in the league began to provide educational and athletic opportunities to blacks. In the late 1970 s, women s athletics began somewhat of a rebirth on the national scene as the NCAA began sponsoring and marketing women s sports. Recognizing the need to provide increased opportunities for female athletes, the OVC established women s championships in basketball, tennis and track in 1977, with cross-country and volleyball added over the next four years. Those sports initially were governed by the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women, but the overall strength of women s programs in the league was demonstrated by the automatic bids the OVC instantly received when the NCAA became the governing body in 1982. Through the early years of the league, administrators wrestled with fan behavior due to the close proximity of the conference members and the intense rivalries that developed. Just as it did decades ago, the OVC took the leadership role on what has become a national issue. In 1995, the OVC implemented a first-of-its-kind Sportsmanship Statement, a policy that promotes principles of fair play, ethical conduct and respect for one s opponent. The statement has become a model for others to follow across the nation and has answered the challenge of the NCAA President s Commission to improve sportsmanship in collegiate athletics. Additionally, the Conference implemented the OVC Institutional Sportsmanship Award in 2003, which is presented to the institution voted by its peers to have best exhibited the standards of sportsmanship and ethical conduct as outlined by the OVC and NCAA. Over its 56 years, OVC teams have garnered national championships and bowl games in football, along with national team or individual titles in rifle, cross-country, track and golf. The OVC has produced several Olympic athletes, including Murray State s Morgan Hicks, who is a member of the 2004 U.S. Olympic Rifle Team. In addition, some of the greatest players in professional sports were educated at OVC institutions, including former greats such as basketball s Clem Haskins (Western Kentucky) and Bubba Wells (Austin Peay), and two-sport star Steve Hamilton (Morehead State). Present-day standouts are basketball players Popeye Jones (Murray State) and Trenton Hassell (Austin Peay); football players Chad Bratzke (Eastern Kentucky), Marquis Walker (Southeast Missouri), Chris Watson (Eastern Illinois) and Brent Alexander (Tennessee State); baseball players Brandon Berger (Eastern Kentucky), Kirk Rueter (Murray State), Kerry Robinson (Southeast Missouri) and Jamie Walker (Austin Peay); and professional golfer Jeff Sluman (Tennessee Tech). The playing field isn t the only place where OVC athletes work hard. The league also recognizes excellence in the classroom. The prestigious OVC Academic Achievement Banner is awarded annually to the league school whose athletes produce the highest grade point average when compared to the general student body. Also, six Scholar-Athlete Awards are presented yearly to male and female athletes, while others are commended for their academic success by being Medal of Honor recipients or earning a spot on the Commissioner s Honor Roll. Additionally, the Steve Hamilton Sportsmanship Award, in honor of the former Morehead State student-athlete, coach and athletics director, is presented annually to a junior or senior student-athlete with significant athletic contributions who best exemplifies the characteristics of sportsmanship and citizenship. The vision of leadership demonstrated by the founding fathers in 1948 remains alive today as the OVC prepares for the future. One example is in regard to the current trend in collegiate athletics administration for increased involvement of university presidents in setting policies and making rules. The presidents of OVC institutions have always governed the conference, long before presidential governance became a national theme. The OVC sponsors baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, tennis and track for men; and basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and volleyball for women. In addition, the OVC also sponsors combined men s and women s rifle. Over the last decade, the league has grown, not only in the number of athletics opportunities it provides for students, but in the number of institutions in the conference. In 2003, Jacksonville State University and Samford University became the newest members of the OVC, joining Southeast Missouri State University (1991), the University of Tennessee at Martin (1992) and Eastern Illinois University (1996) as the league s most recent additions. Other current representatives include charter members Eastern Kentucky University, Morehead State University and Murray State University, along with Austin Peay State University, Tennessee State University and Tennessee Technological University.
