welcome runners! Your Lawrence Hy-Vee stores are proud to be sponsors of the Hy-Vee Kansas Half Marathon! At Hy-Vee, our mission is Making lives easier, healthier and happier, and we feel there is no better way to live up to this mission than aligning ourselves with this great event and with an organization like Health Care Access. As a locally owned business here in Lawrence, we feel that giving back all that we can, helps to strengthen our community and helps us stay on the track to a healthier, more vibrant future for our friends and neighbors. The Hy-Vee Kansas Half Marathon is an exciting event that brings people from throughout our community together with those from neighboring communities, uniting them in one common purpose: to work towards health and happiness while at the same time, raising money for Health Care Access, an organization that strives daily to do the same. We could not be happier to be a part of such a great community, and to sponsor such a wonderful event. We plan to continue this partnership into the future and together, we can make life in Lawrence easier, healthier, and happier for all! Kylene Etzel, RD, LD, Lawrence Hy-Vee Registered Dietitian charity partner Dear Participants, From all the staff and volunteers at Health Care Access Clinic we wish to say thank you for participating in the eighth annual Kansas Half Marathon and 5K race. This year participation in each event is increasing and the route is top notch. Your run will be taking you through the magnificent University of Kansas campus, Haskell Indian Nations campus, historic downtown, and many of the beautiful neighborhoods that make this community so special. The other feature that makes Lawrence special is the commitment of our volunteers, so as you pass them be sure to show your appreciation. We could not hold such a successful event without these wonderful volunteers who do it to help us provide life changing medical care to Douglas County s low-income uninsured residents. With the help of these and our medical volunteers, we turn every dollar you help raise into another $7 worth of healthcare for a friend, neighbor, or loved one in need in our community. Even with health care insurance law changes, the need remains great, with over 14,000 low-income people in Douglas County living without insurance. Special thanks to Hy-Vee, The Summit, the City of Lawrence, and all our sponsors for providing the support we need to make race day happen. Runners like you know the thrill of good health. By participating in today s race, you help us improve the health of patients who have no where else to turn. Thank you and have a great race! Shelly R. Wakeman, Executive Director 1
