CHANNEL CHATTER ILLINOIS STATE USBC WBA VOL. XXVII NUMBER 1 SEPTEMBER, 2013 FROM THE PRESIDENT S DESK Welcome to a new bowling season. After it seems a very short summer, here we go wishing you all a great bowling season, and hopefully all those knees and elbows will hold up the entire season. As we move forward this year, the Illinois State USBC WBA has proposed a state dues increase with the support of Wisconsin and Iowa. Hopefully the dues increase will pass through the National delegates at Convention in April 2014. Midwest Tournament a dream come true for the six states, will travel to South Bend, Indiana in 2014 and then to Rockford, Illinois in 2015. Watch for entry blanks coming out soon, and start to get your teams ready. In 2015 we hope to have the largest of the tournaments. As I move in this new position, I ask for your patience, trust, support and conversation (as the door is always open) to improve our State organization to be the best it can be. Looking forward to working with all of you in the near future. For the sport Betty McCann, President DATES TO REMEMBER: Nominating forms due to Nominating Chairman Lisa Bumgardner by November 1, 2013. Service Award forms for those individuals having served 10, 15 and 20 or more years due after August 1, 2013. (forms in the July packet mailing) Credential forms are to be returned to Illinois State USBC WBA Office by December 15, 2013. All award forms for the 2012-13 bowling season should have been sent to the ILLINOIS State USBC WBA office by July 31, 2013. FROM THE SECRETARY S DESK Welcome all to the 2013-14 bowling season. Please note the changes on the 2013-14 Award Form and make an effort to send in your awards for all women bowlers who join the Illinois State USBC WBA and pay their membership fee of $1.00. This membership fee is what pays for these awards and if someone wins just one award they have received their membership fee back. As the bowling season is getting started, I hope all of you are starting to think about the State Tournament. This year we will be in the Belleville Area for the tournament. Belleville is near St. Louis, Mo and that means casinos again. So start putting your teams together and let s make this a really fun weekend and, of course, a large tournament. Tournament entries are being received daily and to date we have over 200 reservations with some paid entries. Be sure to indicate at least two, if not three choices when you send in your entries, with fees. Also indicate a cell phone number so if necessary you may be reached with questions. Our Joint Workshop was well attended in June and hosted by the Sterling USBC WBA. Thanks to Cathy Hall, her committee and to Dona Reinink, IBA Association Manager for a job well done and for an interesting workshop. A reminder for Association Managers, please send in your Service Award Forms for your Directors and Officers; Final Award Forms for the 2012-13 bowling season; Delegates for the Annual Meeting by the due dates on the forms. Credential forms for the Annual Meeting in the Tri-County Illinois USBC (Belleville Area) are due by December 16th so I do hope that you have elected Delegates and they are planning on attending the Annual Meeting on February 15, 2014. The Delegate party on Friday night will be Girls Just Want to Have Fun and is a 1980 s theme party. Thanks for all of your help in this regard. Earlene M. Nelson, Association Manager HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES FOR 2014 OUTSTANDING BOWLER: Joyce Yocum, Rockford USBC WBA MERITORIOUS SERVICE: Toria Funderburg, Belvidere USBC MEMBER OF YEAR; Marge Balke, Streator USBC WBA

PAGE 2 September, 2013 TWENTY YEAR CLUB NEWS Well, time is flying and its almost time for another 20 Year Club Luncheon! This year our luncheon will be held in Belleville. Invitations will go out in December. My Mother and I may be leaving the cold weather for a little warmer weather, so get your responses in as soon as possible after receiving your invitation. Again, emailing worked well last year so we'll be doing that again. If you know of someone who might be eligible to become a 20 year club member, please contact me and I will mail or email them an application. Requirements are that you have bowled in the state championship tournament and/or been a delegate to the state convention for 20 years or more. We have alphabetical listings from 1981through 2010 that I will check after receiving the completed application form. Applications can be obtained by contacting me at mmcats13@comcast.net or by contacting the Illinois State USBC WBA office in Bloomington, 309-827-6355. I have added an e-mail address line on the form. After researching, I can e-mail you the number of years you have or send a letter of congratulations if you have your 20 years. It's been a long, HOT summer, especially for me as I have a new left knee! I'm sure you all want to get back to air-conditioned bowling!! Melinda M. PAGE 3 SEPTEMBER, 2013 ILLINOIS USBC BA ILLINOIS BA COUNCIL OF DELEGATES AND HALL OF FAME OCTOBER 18, 19 and 20 at the Four Points Sheraton Downtown, Peoria, Illinois. WHAT S GOING ON AROUND THE STATE: DECATUR USBC WBA Some habits are hard to break. Take the DWBA Wiener Roast for example. We do it every September for our members and have been doing it for the last 45 years. Even though the turnout keeps dwindling, we're just can't give it up. This year we're trying new tactics. We're having a Baby Photo contest, we've put together a few baskets for the members to take a chance on, we have door prizes, and we're copying Oprah and Dr. Phil by giving everyone a 'little coffee table book' to take home. And yes, we'll be doing some of the usual stuff, like announcing upcoming events, recognizing our members for service awards and scoring accomplishments. All City Team members will be announced at the outing - that should bring out the hopefuls. We'll be encouraging our members to "Stash some Cash'. In October they will need $50 for the State 600 tournament in Bloomington, in November they will need $75 for the IWBA tournament entry and $50 for our City Tournament. If they have any money left over - there's always Christmas. A long, long time ago (1975) Decatur had 4,210 WBA members and only one 700-series was shot that year - Marlene Coffman did it! In 2013 with only 495 members, forty-seven 700-series were bowled. Something changed!! Vivian VanderBurgh Publicity Chairman PEORIA USBC WBA And here we go again another great year of bowling. I have taken the summer off and not bowled a summer league so I am looking forward to getting started again. I plan to bowl as many tournaments as I can make this year. Since my last Channel Chatter report I checked something off of my bucket list, Snow Skiing and dislocated shoulder. I have healed and according to my Orthopedic Surgeon I don't need surgery Hooray! Now I just want to check off the bucket list, Contestant on the Price Is Right and what fun that would be. This summer many from Peoria WBA drove to Lansing, Michigan and some even bowled very well, the rest of us also had a great time. What a great start for the first event of the Midwest Tournament. Lots to do at this time with the local board and lots of meetings to attend. We have just finished our workshop for our Secretaries both new and returning. We give them their packets for the new season and information on things to come such as our local Joint Hall of Fame and all of the upcoming tournaments that we promote. We were also given a dues increase by our members that starts this year as we have depleted funds in our savings accounts. We are looking at many options to raise funds so that we can supply awards to our members that USBC will no longer offer in the 2014-2015 bowling season. The Ways and Means Committee is presently in the midst of a flower sale. We are selling Mums from a local florist and this is perhaps the easiest one we have done. We sell mum "cards" to our friends, family and our bowling family members. We order the flowers and pay for them when ordered but our customer picks up there own flowers with the "card" and at that time they can pick the color they like best. The florist has really worked out all the details for us and hopefully we will be very successful. We will also be doing our Holiday Bazaar to be held in November date to be announced. Our Hall of Fame is scheduled for November 9, 2013 and will be held at the Par-a-Dice Hotel and Casino. The women will be inducting our local Financial Assistant Cynthia Fortune in the Meritorious Service category. Our Outstanding Bowler is Danielle Davis, and Pioneer Bowler is Leona Myers. Tickets remain the same price as last year, $30.00 and can be obtained from any board member. Our tournaments begin with the Joint Senior Tournament to be held September 28 & 29 and October 2, 5 & 6 at Landmark Lanes. Our 600 Club 9 pin no tap tournament will be held October 26 & 27 at Mt Hawley Bowl. The Joint Mixed Couples will be Feb. 22 & 23 and March 1 & 2, 2014 tentatively set at Mt. Hawley Bowl. The Peoria USBC WBA Annual City Tournament opens March 15 and ends March 30 with the tournament scheduled for the last three weekends of March 2014. Don't forget all of the Illinois State USBA WBA tournaments. The state seniors bowl at the Strike and Spare II in Lockport. IWBA 600 Club will hold it's annual Tournament in Bloomington on October 5 and 6 with the meeting scheduled for Saturday October 5. They will also have a Mail-O- Graphic Tournament March 2, 2014 thru March 15, 2014. Sterling's Blackhawk Lanes will host Illinois State 500 Club Bowling Tournament October 12 and 13, 2013. Tournament entry blanks are also available from your local association for the Illinois State USBC WBA Tournament. Entries close November 18 with the tournament opening Feb. 8, 2014 and last date to bowl is April 27, 2014. The Midwest Women's Tournament is scheduled for May and June. Thanks to all of your for your support and I wish you the best bowling scores, the best bowling friends and most of all the best fun. Thanks for all you do. Sharon Bailey Illinois State USBC WBA Director

PAGE 4 September, 2013 STERLING USBC WBA The Sterling USBC WBA has had a very busy year and the whole year will be busy also. We had the state BA and WBA workshop that was held in June. 90 people attended. The comments received were greatly appreciated. The Annual Secretary's workshop was held July 30th at Blackhawk Lanes. Tables with all USBC, Illinois USBC WBA and Sterling USBC WBA information were displayed. President Carolyn Pursell opened the workshop with the help of the board members. Association Manager discussed all the necessary paperwork that the secretaries need to process. She also informed them that USBC would be discontinuing their awards program. It will be up to the local associations to decide what awards they will have. A questionnaire will be going to the bowlers the next two weeks to see what awards they would like to have. There were two new secretaries and one new president. They enjoyed the workshop and asked many questions. Association Manager Jo Dell Cruz presented the Secretary of the Year Award to Lorri Taylor. The next event for our association will be the Illinois State 500 Club tournament being held October 12 and 13th at Blackhawk Lanes. We are excited to have this tournament. Barbara Leckbee has been great distributing the tournament information for our members. Many have signed up already!!! November will be the Three Times the Fun Tournament. We have held this tournament for many years now and many that do not participate otherwise love the fun of this tournament. This consists of 9 pin, 10 pin and 3-6-9 pin. This tournament has grown every year. We do not charge much and the senior bowlers like the format. We are also having a Holiday Gift Promotion at the Sterling Family Moose Center. We have many private sellers setting up there. They will contribute part of their sales to our association. New this year: our City Tournament held in January has been Bowl for The Cure now for many years. All funds raised go to the Local Home of Hope. The men's association wanted to bowl and contribute also, so we now have a Mixed Doubles Bowl for the Cure next April. The format will be different and also the fund raising. We think this will be another good fundraiser. We could easily double our contributions to the Home of Hope center. Our association is trying to keep our bowlers interested. New ideas and formats are always on our minds. Anyone willing to contribute new ideas please do. Side note: The State Senior Tournament is filling up fast. Get your entries in the mail!!! ANOTHER TOURNAMENT FOR THOSE TOUR- NAMENT MINDED BOWLERS I want to bring to your attention to the Midwest Women s Tournament which opens on May 24, 2014 and ends June 29, 2014 at Chippewa Lanes in South Bend, Indiana. This tournament is sponsored by State Associations of Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Ohio and Wisconsin. Tournament blanks may be secured from our office or the office of any of the Association Managers in the various states. There is also a link on our Web Site ; ilusbcwba.com to get to the Midwest Women s Bowling Tournament. Check it out.
