We have money! The gate receipts from Marching Festival were in excess of $3000. This is more money than we have received in recent history from the gate at this festival. ii. MOTION to accept report. Brooks/Compton Carried c. President!s Report: Roger Stevens i. Please take the time to register for 1 of 7 12/30/08 1:15 PM

our Yahoo Groups online. This is a great way to communicate with the other directors in our district. Check out the MSBOA state and district V website. ii. If your school uses a computerized check writing system, please be sure that the check is made out to the correct person and correct address. These checkwriting systems tend to remember the last payee, which is not always the place it should go. iii. MOTION to accept report. Campbell/Turner Carried d. Marching Band Festival: Roger Stevens i. St Johns did an excellent job hosting. Congratulations! ii. Make sure all applications include an administrator!s signature. iii. Please put your email address on your marching band form and Roger will contact you with schedules and information. Huber/Monroe Carried e. Solo & Ensemble Festival: Greg Smokovitz i. Bay City Central is hosting the High School District Festival. ii. DEADLINES: We are trying to align with the state deadlines to make things easier for our officers. Try to get used to the deadlines and send paperwork on time. iii. Spring Junior High Solo & Ensemble Festival will be held in Midland. iv. String teachers: please try to decide which junior high festival you would like to attend. This makes it easier to hire good string judges for the festival. v. MOTION to accept report. Turner/Norman Carried f. Band & Orchestra Festival: Craig Heydenburg i. Make sure to go back into the MSBOA website and edit your program information and sight-reading numbers. Please consider the number of parts you will need and not players. You will also 2 of 7 12/30/08 1:15 PM

have to edit your ensemble numbers as well. Just click!edit this event! on www.msboa.org website. ii. Question: Can you sign up for an event and then add extra time later when editing? It could be inconvenient to change the schedule at this late date. Other directors would have to move their times. iii. Internet explorer is currently the recommended program to use when registering. Bentley/ Nadeau Carried g. Worker Assignment: Mike Tolrud i. We were short a few directors at JH S&E in the fall. Everyone showed up, there were just not enough directors. The people working the festival moved around in the different jobs until everything was covered. ii. Worker Assignments will only be posted online. Please check the www.msboa.org website for your assignment. Plan to work if you are sending students to the festivals. iii. Solo & Ensemble worker assignments will be posted online soon. Turner/Compton, D. Carried h. All Star Band: Heidi Ott i. Mike posted online in the Yahoo Groups when he received the nomination forms. ii. We need to have a committee to choose these students. It is too difficult for one person to do this. iii. We are considering a change to the nomination form to make it more informative for the selection committee. Campbell/Brooks Carried i. Festival Improvements: Roger Stevens in absence of JoAnn Gross i. Please bring any concerns to JoAnn so she can take them to the committee. ii. Discussion was had regarding the 3 of 7 12/30/08 1:15 PM

S&E proficiency rules and how students qualify for the different levels of proficiency. This will be discussed at the State General Membership meeting in January. iii. Sight-reading judge sheets were discussed again. Would like to change them. iv. Discussion of combining groups for festival. Please be sure to follow the rules in the Yearbook. v. It was recommended that a committee be formed to ensure festival rules are adhered to. vi. Email JoAnn with any questions on this report. j. Music Ed Committee: Craig Heydenburg i. This committee is putting together a music reading session. The proposal was to have four sites on the 1 st and 3 rd weekends in November. This event will be completely free. All of the selections added in the fall to the Basic Music List will be played at these reading sessions. Relatively informal weekend. Lunch will be provided. It will run from about 8:30 am until approx. 3:30 pm. The state office and state executive board must still approve all of this. k. Elementary Music: Roger Stevens i. Please get involved with this. There is a meeting/conference every fall. Consider attending, it is a wonderful experience. l. String Committee: Iris Haynes i. Fall Middle Level String clinics were a success. Sites for 2005 will be chosen in the middle of February. Music selection will be made at the March meeting of all the District Orchestral Activities Vice Presidents in Lansing. ii. These directors will be attending a luncheon in their honor at the January Music Conference in Ann Arbor. o. MSBOA Honors/YAF: i. Please make your students aware of this Honors weekend. MOTION to close the nominations and cast a unanimous ballot. Bentley/Huber carried b. There was an incorrect date for the HS State Solo & Ensemble Festival. The correct date is March 19, 2005. c. The State Conference is in Ann Arbor January 21 & 22, 2005. i. Mike Norman is presenting in two sessions. Craig Heydenburg is presenting one session. 5 of 7 12/30/08 1:15 PM
