2 MORE ON THE MATCHUP STONY BROOK vs. VERMONT All-Time Series: UVM leads 19-14 UVM won the first ever meeting (in Burlington) 71-59 on Jan. 24, 2002. Catamounts won first five meetings. UVM has won three straight against Stony Brook. Last season, won 53-43 at home (Jan. 28, 2017) and 57-43 on Long Island (Feb. 26, 2017). In last year s game at Stony Brook, Candice Wright led the way for UVM with 23 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 4 blocks and a steal. She went 8-11 from the field and 4-6 from downtown. Crymble added 12 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists. SCOUTING STONY BROOK 8-8 overall, 8-5 in non-conference play, 5-3 at home, 3-5 on the road, and no neutral site games thus far. 0-3 to begin America East play. Only two Seawolves are averaging double-figures in scoring through the first 16 games of the season: Shania Johnson (14.6 PPG) and Jerell Matthews (13.3 PPG). Cheyenne Clark is the leading rebound (9.2 RPG). Seven freshmen on the roster. Four straight losses: at Hartvard (Dec. 31), at Maine (Jan. 3), vs. Hartford (Jan. 6) and 72-68 vs. Albany (Jan. 10) CAROLINE MCCOMBS is in her 4th season as head coach of the Seawolves. McCombs is second all-time in wins among Stony Brook coaches in the program s Division I era. Last season, her team featured a top-40 scoring defense, allowing the third-fewest three pointers in the nation. First Stony Brook Division I coach to lead her team to two postseason appearances. From 2012-14, McCombs was an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at Auburn University. She was influential in signing the nation s 16 best recruiting class in 2012. Prior to Auburn, McCombs coached at Northwestern University from 2010-12. Before that, she spent five seasons at Pittsburgh (2005-10), helping rebuild that program. McCombs was an assistant at Valparaiso from 1999-2005. A Medina, Ohio native, she graduated from Youngstown State in 1998 and played in two NCAA Tournaments. NEWS AND NOTES ALL THE WRIGHT REASONS Junior Candice Wright continues to leave a mark on the record book. The native of Cambridge, Ontario has registered 125 blocks in her career, the most among any Catamount for a career. Wright became the sole leader in that category with five blocks at Rider on Dec. 1. She recorded another fiveblock game vs. CCSU on Dec. 21. As a freshman two years ago, Wright logged 50 blocks, setting a single-season program record in that category. Of the top-4 UVM shot blockers of all-time (not named Candice Wright), none had more than 46 through their sophomore campaign. It took Wright just one season to reach 50 blocks. Candice Wright is averaging 2.1 blocks per game through the first 14 games of the regular season. I D LIKE TO THANK THE ACADEMY Hanna Crymble has registered doublefigures scoring in ten games this season has eclipsed the 30-point mark in two of those games. The sophomore forward won the America East Player of the Week award for the week ending on Nov. 19, 2017. On Friday, Nov. 17 vs. Howard, Crymble scored a career-high 37 points and tied a career-high with 13 rebounds for her lone double-double this season. Crymble ranks second in the America East in scoring (19.2 PPG), first in field goal percentage (58%) and first in free throw percentage (89%). Crymble has registered double figures in 13 of 15 games this season and has scored 20+ points in six of those games. SYDNEY SMITH: 1K With a 16-point performance against Florida International University in Miami on Dec. 30, Sydney Smith became just the 21st player in program history to score 1,000 points for a career. The Catamounts senior co-captain is the first player to reach that mark since Niki Taylor did so in 2015. Smith has also made 172 three-point field goals in her career, which ranks 4th in program history. She passed her former teammate, Kayla Burchill 15 (170). LAST TIME OUT January 6 at UMBC: The Catamounts won their first America East road game of the season 72-58 at UMBC. Hanna Crymble led the way with 19 points, 4 rebounds and 2 blocks for UVM, while Sydney Smith added 18 points (4-7 3PT) of her own. Kristina White also registered double figures, with 14 pts (4-6 3PT). White grabbed 5 rebounds while Cassidy Derda led the Catmaounts with 10 boards. Vermont pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring UMBC 28-11 in that period while connecting on six three-point field goals. As a team, Vermont shot 51% (26-51) from the field, 40% (10-25) from three-point range and 77% (10-13) at the free throw line. This was UVM s first road win of the season. Vermont has not won back-to-back games to begin conference play since 2009-10, when they made the NCAA Tournament. MORE DEPTH IN 2017-18 With Sydney Smith back on the court, the Catamounts have instantly upgraded. The senior can score consistently. When healthy, Smith s numbers speak for themselves as she led the team with 12.1 points per game in 2016-17 before her season came to an abrupt ending due to a knee injury. Senior Katie Lavelle will see solid minutes at point guard with newcomer Kianna Funderburk backing her up. Coach Day feels good about what that duo can bring to the table. There will be competition at the shooting guard position between R-Senior Kristina White and freshman Josie Larkins. Sophomore Hanna Crymble is one of the more dynamic players on the roster. Her versatility continues to improve, as she posted a double-double in the Nov. 4 game against St. Michael s. Crymble should have a chance to be an All-Conference player in 2017-18 after a season in which she was selected to the conference s All-Rookie Team. After sitting out 2016-17, junior Cassidy Derda is cleared to play for the Catamounts. The South Burlington native could not play last season after playing for St. Francis Brooklyn. She has two years of eligibility remaining. There were some positives for the Catamounts last season despite a 9-20 record. UVM led the America East in FG% defense (36%) and finished second in 3-pt % defense (29.5%). Vermont was one of three America East teams (including Binghamton and Albany) to average more than 4 blocks per game. The team seeks to lower turnovers this season. That figure was at 18.4 per game last season. With a deeper lineup, this team aims to score at least 60 PPG this season. However, the biggest key to this season is to maintain a healthy roster, which was not the case last year.
