CHEERSPORT EXPO 2010 DEMOGRAPHICS CHEERSPORT National Cheerleading and Dance Championships Attendee Profile: Allstar cheerleading is a team sport combining gymnastics, dance and traditional cheerleading stunts. Many of the participants start out in gymnastics but move over to competitive cheerleading because it is more forgiving of different body types and does not require the 25 to 40 hours a week necessary to compete in gymnastics. Because competitive cheerleading and dance is a very expensive sport, most participants come from middle to upper class families with significant disposable income. The cost of the sport varies widely but a conservative estimate of the average cost per athlete would be approximately $2000 per year. This does not include family travel expenses. 95% of all participants are female; 5% are male 90% of competitive teams practice between five and ten hours a week 75% of competitive teams are organized by gyms specializing in cheerleading 95% of parents pay for their children to participate in the sport, the median age of athletes is 13 80% of athletes over the age of 10 carry cell phones 75% would say their beverage of choice during competition is water or juice Competitors vary in age from age 6 to 18. Breakdown of athletes is as follows: 6-12 years old30% 12-15 years old 40% 16-18 years old 30% The average spectator for competitive cheerleading also provides a sponsor with unique marketing opportunities. 90% of spectators are parents 65% have a disposable income in excess of $135,000, with another 10% earning more than $200,000 75% have more than one child in competitive sports 90% have one or more credit cards 80% have two or more family cars 80% eat out more than three times a week
