Founded in, the University of occupies nearly acres along historic Route in the heart of Albuquerque, a city of half a million people. From the magnificent volcanic mesas to the west, past the banks of the fabled Rio Grande toward the Sandia Mountains to the east, Albuquerque thrives on a dynamic blend of three major cultures and an open, friendly style set in a stunning location. UNM s beautiful campus environment, with its unique Pueblo Revival architectural theme, is known to Albuquerque residents as an oasis in their city. This oasis features a nationally recognized Campus Arboretum that offers an outstanding botanical experience and is known as one of the state s great public open spaces. UNM is a Carnegie Research/Doctoral-Extensive University, a distinction that recognizes an exceptional level of funded research activity. UNM is also designated as a Minority-serving institution and is one of only four Research/Doctoral-Extensive institutions in the country to also be designated as Hispanic-serving. The University offers more than separate degrees and degree programs and has s only schools of Law, Medicine, Architecture and Pharmacy. UNM is also ranked among the top universities in the country in terms of the overall quality of its undergraduate programs. University Hospital provides the only Trauma I-level services in the state. The UNM Health Sciences Center also provides a highly regarded neonatal intensive care center, a state-of-the-art cancer research and treatment center and the state s most comprehensive group of tertiary care specialists. Head Coach Don Flanagan The winningest coach in New Mexico women s basketball history, Don Flanagan has nurtured the Lobo program into an upward-rising basketball powerhouse. In eight years at the helm of the program, Flanagan has guided the Lobos to six consecutive winning seasons and six straight postseason appearances, including three trips to the NCAA Tournament. Under Flanagan, UNM has become a consistent threat to win the conference title, as the Lobos have finished no worse than third in each of the last six seasons. Flanagan s teams have become noted for their stifling defense. has finished among the conference leaders in scoring defense every year and has consistently ranked in the top- in the nation in that category as well. Fan support has been tremendous as a result of the Lobos defense and intense style of play. This season the Lobos finished the regular-season fourth in the nation in average attendance with a school record, fans a game. The Lobos had six games of crowds in excess of,. UNM packed The Pit with, fans against UNLV on Feb.. That was the largest crowd at a women s basketball game for the season. All of s home games had crowds over,. UNM finished the regular season with a overall record. The Lobos were second in the Mountain West Conference at. Flanagan was hired as the fourth head coach in the history of the women's basketball program at the University of New Mexico on April,. Before coming to the Lobos, Flanagan left his mark firmly engraved in the annals of high school girl's basketball record books. He established numbers on the high school level that were, in a word - mind-blowing. In fact, Flanagan posted a won-loss record at Eldorado High School in Albuquerque that will never be duplicated in New Mexico. His incredible career record in years was good for a winning percentage of. percent. Flanagan's accomplishments included different tournament championships, district championships, winning streaks of,,, and games respectively, and his teams averaged wins a year for years. During those years, Flanagan's teams went undefeated nine times. In, Eldorado was honored as Albuquerque Sports Hall of Fame of the Year. Additionally Eldorado was ranked nationally seven different years including,,,,,, and. And it didn't stop there. The honors for Flanagan have rolled in continuously year after year. Following the season, Flanagan was inducted into the Albuquerque Sports Hall of Fame for a lifetime of achievement. He was nominated for National High School Coach of the Year honors on three occasions (, and ) and was named Region VIII Coach of the Year for consecutive years (). He was named Albuquerque Sports Hall of Fame Coach of the Year (), Bank of America Coach of the Year ( & ), Albuquerque Tribune Coach of the Year (,,,, and ) and Albuquerque Journal Coach of the Year (,,,, and ). In, Flangan was inducted into the East Hartford Connecticut Explorers Tip-Off Club Hall of Fame. Flanagan was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts and earned his bachelor of arts degree from Fort Lewis College in where he was a member of the Honor Roll. He played on the basketball team at Fort Lewis all four years. He was also honored during college as a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All-Academic team. Flanagan,, and his wife Wahleah, have three children, Sean,, Shane, and Brent,. Don Flanagan at Since Flanagan took over the women s basketball program in, UNM has improved to. The Lobos have captured a conference regular-season championship, two conference tournament championships and made six consecutive postseason appearances. The Lobos advanced to the round of in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in their history. Flanagan became just the fourth coach in women s basketball history prior to the season. He became the school s all-time leader in victories, surpassing Doug Hoselton s previous mark of. It took Flanagan just games to reach wins for his career. Flanagan has had a winning season seven straight years. This season, UNM logged its third straight -win season and fifth overall under Flangan. The five -win campaigns have come in the past six years. UNM had never won games in a season prior to Flangan s arrival. The Lobos have had unprecedented success in the classroom since Don Flanagan s arrival. The Lobo women s basketball team combined for a. grade-point-average during the spring semester. That was the highest average since the school began tracking grades in the fall of. The Lobos have established a terrific winning tradition at home, compiling an impressive record (.), since.

Assistant Coach Jody Hensen Jody Hensen begins her first year at the University of replacing Ed Wyant, who was named head coach at Wofford University in the off-season. "We feel very fortunate to have someone with Jody's credentials," UNM head coach Don Flanagan said. "Her background in recruiting and NCAA Tournament experience should help us a great deal. She came highly recommended from people all over the country and I feel we've got a quality person and coach joining the staff." Hensen spent the past three seasons at Clemson. The Tigers advanced to the NCAA Tournament times in the past seasons, including all three years while Hensen was there. Clemson was in and finished No. in the nation. The Tigers lost to Xavier in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Hensen also served as an assistant coach at Northern Arizona (), Southern Utah () and Alaska-Anchorage (). She was an assistant at NCAA Div. II Alaska-Anchorage before becoming an assistant with the men's team in. The Seawolves won the conference title that year and earned a berth in the NCAA Div. II Tournament. Hensen became only the second woman to coach a men's team at a four-year college. Hensen is originally from Alaska and she graduated from Homer High School. She was a four-year letterwinner at Northern Arizona, ending her career as the school's all-time leader in three-point field goals made () and attempted (), third in games played (), fourth in three-point field goal percentage (.), sixth in steals () and seventh in scoring (). She graduated from Northern Arizona in with a degree in Physical Education. Assistant Coach Yvonne Sanchez Yvonne Sanchez begins her third season as an assistant coach for the Lobos. Her duties include complete recruiting throughout the country, working with Lobo guards during practice, filmbreakdown and scouting of opponents. An Albuquerque native, Sanchez is familiar with Lobo head coach Don Flanagan. She was a three-year letterwinner for Flanagan at Eldorado High School from, during which time the Eagles won a state-record consecutive games and two AAAA titles. She was twice named to the all-state team and was also tabbed as the state A Player of the Year by the Albuquerque Journal. It has been a lot of fun working with Coach Flanagan on a professional level, said Sanchez. He is a respected coach throughout the country and it has been a different aspect for me, no longer as a player, but as a coach. Sanchez spent the campaign as an assistant at San Diego State for former head coach Barb Smith. While with the Aztecs, she was responsible for recruiting and compliance in addition to coaching post players at San Diego State. Prior to her stint with the Aztecs, Sanchez spent six years () in Las Cruces, N.M., as an assistant for the State Roadrunners. At NMSU, she recruited throughout the nation, developed scouting reports and coached post players and perimeter players. She got her coaching start in at Academy of Our Lady of Peace, a high school in San Diego. She led the squad to CIF championships in and, and was named the San Diego prep coach of the year, despite not having an indoor facility. During her tenure at OLP, the Pilots compiled a (.) record. While in San Diego, Sanchez worked as a child care worker at a detention facility for boys and girls who had been placed in protective custody. Her responsibilities included the supervision of residents until suitable placements could be found. She later became the Program Director for a to -bed facility. Her responsibilities included the hiring and supervision of staff, resident intakes and all other decisions within the facility. She also worked directly with court officials, law enforcement officers, social workers and county mental health officials. I have known Yvonne for a long time, said Flanagan. I knew she would be a great addition to our staff. She is a strong coach on the floor and a very energetic recruiter. She has fit in nicely here. The -year old Sanchez is a graduate of U.S. International University in San Diego, where she was a four-year letterwinner. She received her bachelor s degree in Psychology from USIU and she is earning a masters in Criminal Justice at State. Sanchez is an active member of the WBCA and has spoken on recruiting at the Assistant Coaches Round Table during the women s Final Four. Assistant Coach Dave Shoemate Dave Shoemate begins his third season at the University of as an assistant coach. Shoemate's duties include film exchange, breaking down the scouting tapes, assisting with recruiting and helping keep track of the student-athletes community service. This is Shoemate s first collegiate coaching stint. Shoemate began his coaching career in Durango, Colo., where he coached ninth grade boy s basketball from. He returned to Albuquerque and continued with boys basketball at Highland High School and the C team from. At Menaul High School, his alma mater, Shoemate coached the JV team in. Staying with the private school theme in Albuquerque, St. Pius was his next stop, as a varsity assistant from. He took a year off from coaching before breaking into the Albuquerque Public School system as a coach. At Eldorado, he switched from coaching boys to girls with the JV team from. From, Shoemate was at La Cueva High School with the girl s basketball team as either a head coach or an assistant. Shoemate also spent years teaching special education at APS. Shoemate previously spent three years on the staff of Don Flanagan at Eldorado High School as the junior varsity coach. A graduate of the University of New Mexico, Shoemate earned his bachelor of science degree in Recreation. He completed graduate school at and received his master;s in Special Education in May of. Shoemate,, was born in Colorado Springs, Colo., but has been in Albuquerque for the last years. He and his wife, Yolanda, also a teacher at Eldorado, have three children, James,, Sara, and Michael,.
