HOW THEY GOT HERE: After losing to Mount Union in the OAC Tournament Championship game, Marietta received an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Pioneers hosted first and second round games at Ban Johnson Arena. Marietta defeated Medaille (N.Y.) in the first round, 120-81, and Wooster in the second round, 88-86. St. Olaf was eliminated from the MIAC Tournament in the semifinals and also received an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Oles played their first and second rounds games at Wisconsin-Whitewater. St. Olaf defeated Ohio Wesleyan in the first round, 90-78, and Defiance in the second round, 68-63. SCOUTING THE PIONEERS: Currently, Marietta is ranked 13th in the NCAA in scoring offense (82.2 ppg), 215th in scoring defense (70.2 ppg) and 19th in scoring margin (+12.0). RaNeal Ewing is the Pioneers leading scorer averaging 13.5 ppg and is shooting 41.7% from three-point range. Garrett Stephenson is averaging 12.4 ppg and 6.6 rpg. Eddy Grenert leads the Pioneers in rebounding with 8.5 rpg and is scoring 11.0 ppg. Luis Garcia is averaging 10.0 ppg and leads Marietta with 46 three-pointers. ST. Ben Figini leads St. Olaf in scoring with 16.9 ppg and rebounding with 5.8 rpg. Justin Pahl averages 13.6 ppg and has a team-best 54 three-pointers. Sterling Nielsen is averaging 12.2 ppg and has dished out 110 assists. Riley Aeikens is averaging 9.8 ppg and has 52 steals on the season. The Pioneers currently rank ninth in the NCAA in total rebounds (1232) and 11th in rebounding margin (+8.3). Junior post player Eddy Grenert ranks 45th in the nation in total rebounds (256). BOMBS AWAY #1: The three-point basket is one of Marietta s biggest weapons. The Pioneers rank 11th in the NCAA in total threepointers made (285), 29th in three-pointers made per game (9.5), 17th in total three-pointers attempted (752) and 63rd in three-point shooting percentage (37.9%). BOMBS AWAY #2: Who shoots the last second three-pointer? That s a tough question for opposing defenses as 15 different Pioneers have sank three-pointers this season including post players Garrett Stephenson, Eddy Grenert, Andy Stegman, Jack Thome and A.J. Davis. DEEP, DEEP BENCH: Head Coach Jon VanderWal doesn t hesitate to go to his bench, and with good reason. The Pioneers have 13 players averaging over five minutes per game. Of those 13, eight are averaging over 5.0 ppg. OAC HONORS: Marietta was well represented on the All-OAC team with senior Garrett Stephenson and junior RaNeal Ewing earning first team, junior Eddy Grenert was second team and senior Andy Dollman earned Honorable Mention.
