VILLANOVA NOTEBOOK NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP: Villanova is making its sixth appearance in the NCAA Championship this season and its first since 2006. All six NCAA bids have come since 2001, and this season marks the fifth time that the Wildcats have received an at-large bid to the national tournament. In its five previous NCAA Championship appearances, Villanova has a record of 4-4-2 (.500). The Wildcats advanced at least to the second round in four of the five previous trips and reached the Sweet 16 (regional semifinal) back in 2003. BIG EAST IN THE NCAA: Only three BIG EAST teams have made more appearances in the NCAA Championship than Villanova. The Wildcats are making their sixth NCAA appearance this season and are one of seven teams from the conference in the field of 64. The others are Connecticut (16th appearance), Notre Dame (15th), West Virginia (10th), Rutgers (5th), Marquette (4th) and St. John's (1st). This is only the third time that the BIG EAST has placed at least seven teams in the NCAA Championship. The league also received seven bids in 2006 after previously having eight teams make the tournament in 2001. LOOMING AT-LARGE: The announcement of the 64-team NCAA Championship field on Monday night indicated a reward for teams that play in the strongest conferences in the nation. The tournament bracket includes 30 teams that receive automatic bids for winning their conference, plus another 34 at-large bids. Of the 34 at-large bids handed out, 30 went to teams from the six BCS conferences (ACC, Big 12, BIG EAST, Big Ten, Pacific 10, Southeastern). The four teams from non-bcs leagues to earn at-large selections were BYU (Mountain West), Central Florida (Conference USA), San Diego (West Coast) and Santa Clara (West Coast). RESUME, PART I: Leading up to the unveiling of the NCAA Championship bracket on Monday night, Villanova was considered to be among a group of "bubble" teams contending for at-large selections. The Wildcats presented a very strong argument for an NCAA bid based on the team's accomplishments during the season. Villanova is currently 11-5-5 overall this season and is rated No. 44 in the Ratings Percentage Index. The Wildcats have played 13 of their 21 games against teams ranked in the top 100 of the RPI and have just two losses outside the RPI Top 40. In addition, Villanova has defeated a team ranked No. 16 (Virginia Tech) and advanced past Connecticut (No. 26) on penalty kicks in the first round of the BIG EAST Championship. RESUME, PART II: In addition to their own strong resume for the NCAA Championship, the Wildcats also compared well with some other teams vying for at-large spots. Villanova has played eight of its games against teams that also reached the tournament. Two teams left out of the tournament were Missouri (RPI No. 47) and Charlotte (RPI No. 53). The Tigers were defeated at home by DePaul this season, while the Wildcats won at DePaul on the final day of the regular season. In addition, Villanova played a road game against the 49ers during the season and came away with a 3-2 victory. KEEPING WITH TRADITION: With an 11-5-5 record this season, Villanova is guaranteed its 11th straight year with a winning record and at least 10 victories. The 2009 season will also mark the 13th consecutive non-losing season for the Wildcats, who have an all-time record of 292-186-58 (.599) entering the NCAA Championship. BACK ON TRACK: Villanova has made an impressive turnaround this season after going 11-7-1 last year and missing out on postseason play. In 2008, the Wildcats finished 4-6-1 in regular season BIG EAST play and failed to qualify for the BIG EAST Championship for the first time since 2000. This year, Villanova returned to the conference tournament, advanced through a first round game to the quarterfinals, and is now returning to the NCAA Championship for the first time since 2006. HEAD COACH JOHN BYFORD: In his second season at Villanova, head coach John Byford is currently 22-12-6 (.625) at the school. He led the Wildcats to seven consecutive victories at the start of his tenure in 2008 and this season has Villanova once again among the elite teams in the powerful BIG EAST Conference. Byford is the only one of the five head coaches in Villanova program history to have a winning record in each of his first two seasons at the school. In addition, his 22 victories are also the most among the five head coaches through two seasons with the Wildcats. This season will mark the second time that Byford has led one of his teams to the NCAA Tournament, as his Loyola (Md.) team got there in 2007, losing in the first round to Virginia. Byford, who previously spent the 1995 and 1996 seasons as an assistant coach for the Wildcats, returned to the Main Line from Loyola (Md.), where he was head coach from 2005-07. SERIES HISTORY: Villanova and Washington State are meeting for the first time in women's soccer. This will be just the third time that the Wildcats play against a team from the Pacific 10 Conference. Villanova is 0-1-1 against Pac- 10 teams, including a neutral-site loss to UCLA in 1998 (1-0) and a neutral-site tie against Arizona State in 2005 (1-1). Both games took place during the regular season. ABOUT WASHINGTON STATE: The Cougars enter the NCAA Championship with a 13-5-2 overall record and earned an at-large bid to the tournament field. Washington State went 5-2-2 in regular season conference play, with the only two losses coming in overtime to top-ranked and undefeated Stanford, as well as to No. 3 UCLA. The Pacific 10 Conference does not have a postseason conference tournament. The Cougars have outscored their opposition 41-18 this season and posted 10 shutouts. Senior forward Kiersten Dallstream leads the team with 13 goals and 33 points and is tied for the team lead with seven assists. In goal, junior Meghan Berlingo sports a 0.75 goals-against average and an.806 save percentage in 19 games, with seven solo shutouts to her credit. SUPER SENIORS: This year s selection to the NCAA Championship, in a way, means that the Villanova senior class has come full circle since their freshman seasons. The Wildcats seniors are goalkeeper Molly Williams (Hinsdale, Ill.), defenders Kelly Eagan (St. James, N.Y.) and Samantha Moskal (Chantilly, Va.), midfielders Jessica Carnevale (Princeton, N.J.) and Erin Byrnes (Sayville, N.Y.) and forward Grace Hawkins (Northport, N.Y.). As freshmen in 2006, this group was part of the last Villanova team to reach the NCAA Tournament. Now as seniors, they have played vital roles in leading another group of Wildcats to the postseason. Entering NCAA play against Washington State on Friday night, the Villanova senior class owns a career record of 49-20- 14 (.675). TOUGH OUTS: In its last three NCAA Championship appearances, Villanova has been a tough out while facing top competition. Each of the last three teams to eliminate the Wildcats from the tournament have advanced to at least the Elite Eight before bowing out, while one team reached the Final Four. In 2003, Villanova was eliminated on penalty kicks by BYU in the Sweet 16. The next year, the Wildcats lost in double overtime at Princeton in the second round, and the Tigers eventually advanced to the College Cup that season. In 2006, Villanova was defeated, 2-0, in the second round at Penn State. The Nittany Lions won their next game in the tournament to reach the national quarterfinals before falling to eventual national runner-up Notre Dame. STAYING NEUTRAL: Villanova is 4-0 in the NCAA Championship when playing on a neutral field. All four of these games have been first round matchups at the site of another host school. The four wins for the Wildcats have came in 2001 at Penn State (defeated Penn), 2003 at Virginia (defeated Princeton), 2004 at Princeton (defeated Yale) and 2006 at Penn State (defeated Toledo). STAT CATS: VILLANOVA AMONG BIG EAST BEST: A big part of Villanova s success this season has been the team s balance at each position on the field. The Wildcats have won games by overpowering the opposition from an offensive standpoint, as Villanova has scored three or more goals in a game five times. The team is also perfectly comfortable winning a defensive battle and has allowed more than one goal in a game just once in the last 12 outings. As a result of this balance, Wildcat players are among the best in the BIG EAST in the top offensive and defensive categories. On the offensive end, sophomore forward Katie Ryan (Wayne, N.J.) leads the league in points with 29 and is tied for the scoring lead with 11 goals. Her seven assists are also tied for fourth in the conference. Not to be outdone from her defensive position is senior goalkeeper Molly Williams (Hinsdale, Ill.), who has moved into the BIG EAST lead with 116 saves this season. Williams has made 30 saves just in the last four games and she also ranks among the BIG EAST leaders in save percentage (4th,.859). July 27 - Trio of Incoming Freshmen Crowned National Champions Three incoming freshmen to the Villanova roster this season entered preseason camp fresh off being crowned national champions at the US Youth Soccer championships in Lancaster, Massachusetts. Defender Alexa Carugati (Newtown, Pa.), midfielder/defender Carly Edgcomb (Princeton, N.J.) and forward Heidi Sabatura (Lawrenceville, N.J.) play for the FC Bucks Vipers U-18 squad that captured the national title. In the team s first game of the championships, Sabatura netted the game-winning goal in the 69th minute of an eventual 3-1 victory over Pleasanton Ridge (Calif.). The Vipers then defeated ESC 91 Black (Okla.), 2-0, in their second game before playing to a 2-2 tie against Ohio Elite Soccer Academy. The Vipers twice tied the game against Elite in the second half, including the game s final goal in the 72nd minute. FC Bucks and Ohio Elite met again in the national championship game, with the Vipers winning 1-0 on a goal in the 52nd minute. FC Bucks went 3-0-1 at the championships while outscoring its opposition by an 8-3 margin. The Vipers advanced to the national championships when they won a Region 1 title. July 31 - Lindsey Carstens Named Assistant Coach Villanova head coach John Byford announced that Lindsey Carstens has joined the coaching staff and will work primarily with the team s goalkeepers. Carstens has a wealth of playing experience from the collegiate level and the professional ranks and will primarily work with the Wildcat goalkeepers. Prior to coming to Villanova, Carstens played for the W-League Chicago Red Eleven during the summer of 2009. The Red Eleven are affiliated with the Chicago Red Stars and finished in second place in the Midwest Division to qualify for the playoffs. Carstens has also played professionally in the top league in Norway, as she spent the fall of 2008 with Team Strommen in the Toppserien League. The team finished second in its division and was a finalist in the Norway Cup. A silver medal finish in the Cup Final qualified Team Strommen for this year's Euro Cup. While playing in Norway, Carstens was coached by Hege Riise, a former captain of Norway's champion World Cup squad and a current assistant coach for the United States national team. As a coach, Carstens started out as a Region II ODP Camp coach in 2006 and 2007. She also was an assistant coach at Centennial High School in Champaign, Illinois from 2006-09, where she worked with the team's goalkeepers. In addition, Carstens has been a coach at the University of Illinois camps and the CUP Club camps. During her collegiate career, Carstens was a three-year starter in goal and a senior team captain at the University of Illinois. She is the program's all-time record holder for career shutouts (28) and goals-against average (0.94) and also ranks third in school history in saves (200) and fourth in save percentage (.778). The Fighting Illini played in the NCAA Tournament each year of Carstens' career, including berths in the Sweet 16 and Elite 8. Off the field, Carstens received numerous honors while at Illinois. She was chosen by the university Chancellor as the only athlete on the U of I Athletic Board and represented all student-athletes. Carstens was also selected as one of the leaders of the U of I Leadership Academy, compromised of captains from each sport. She was a recipient of the George Huff Award, presented to student-athletes maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Carstens graduated from Illinois in 2008 with a B.S. degree in Kinesiology. August 17 - Villanova Picked Fifth in BIG EAST National Division In an annual preseason poll of league head coaches, Villanova was picked to finish fifth in the BIG EAST National Division this season. The Wildcats feature a squad with 17 returning letterwinners from last season, including nine starters. In addition to the team poll, senior defender Kelly Eagan (St. James, N.Y.) was voted to the All-BIG EAST Preseason Team for the third straight year. Villanova has won at least 10 games and posted a winning record in each of the last 10 seasons and carries a streak of 12 straight non-losing seasons into the upcoming campaign. The Wildcats went 11-7-1 last season but were 4-6-1 in regular season BIG EAST play and finished out of the conference tournament for the first time since 2000. The team is well-stocked this year, returning 87 percent of its scoring (34 of 39 goals) and 62 percent of its assists (26 of 42) from last season. August 24 - Heidi Sabatura Named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week Freshman forward Heidi Sabatura (Lawrenceville, N.J.) has been named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week, it was announced by the league today. In her collegiate debut last week against Temple, Sabatura netted two goals and an assist in a 4-0 victory. Villanova won its season opener for the ninth straight season and posted a shutout for the fifth year in a row. Sabatura assisted on the game's first goal in the 21st minute with a feed to sophomore Katie Ryan (Wayne, N.J.) and then helped to put the game out of reach with a pair of second-half goals. Her first collegiate goal came in the 67th minute when she beat the Owls goalkeeper on a rebound from point-blank range while appearing to simultaneously get inadvertently hit in the face. "Heidi shows so much composure in the box and that is why she is able to finish her scoring chances," Villanova head coach John Byford said. "We saw in this game that she is a great passer as well." Sabatura also tallied the game's final goal in the 88th minute, when she drilled home a shot from the middle of the box. She finished the day tied for the gamehigh with five shots, while scoring on two of her three shots on goal. The Wildcats outshot their visitors by a 24-4 margin. The game against Temple marked the second straight year that a Villanova freshman had a five-point game in her collegiate debut. Current sophomore Megan Verdeur (Levittown, Pa.) had two goals and one assist last season in a 7-0 win over UMBC in the 2008 opener. The start of the Villanova season comes on the heels of a successful summer for Sabatura, who played for the FC Bucks Vipers U-18 team that won the USYSA national championship last month. September 1 - Katie Ryan Named to BIG EAST Honor Roll Sophomore forward Katie Ryan (Wayne, N.J.) has been named to this week's BIG EAST Honor Roll, it was announced by the conference on Monday. Ryan was the Offensive MVP of the Villanova Classic this past weekend, when she scored a goal in both games the Wildcats played, against Virginia Tech and Nebraska. Ryan, who last year was the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week on three different occasions, has netted a goal in each of Villanova's first three games this season. She has now tallied 11 career scores in just 21 games and is tied for the most career goals out of the current players on the roster. In a 2-1, double-overtime win over Virginia Tech on Friday, Ryan scored the game's first goal in the 35th minute and matched a game-high with four shots. She then provided late-game heroics in an eventual 2-2 tie against Nebraska on Sunday, scoring the game-tying goal with just nine seconds left in regulation. Ryan took eight shots in the game, including registering five shots on goal. Through the weekend's games, Ryan was second in the BIG EAST in points (7) and tied for second in goals scored with three. As a freshman last season, she tied for the team lead in goals with eight. September 8 - Heidi Sabatura Named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week For the second time in the first three weeks of the 2009 season, freshman forward Heidi Sabatura (Lawrenceville, N.J.) has been named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week, it was announced on Monday afternoon. Sabatura contributed a goal and two assists to a pair of Villanova road wins this past weekend. In a 4-1 victory at Davidson on Friday evening, Sabatura tallied a goal and an assist. Her assist came on the third Wildcat goal in a span of just five minutes in the first half which put the game out of reach of Davidson. In the second half, Sabatura scored her third goal of the season midway through the period. On Sunday afternoon, the Wildcats took on a powerful regional opponent in Charlotte and came away with a 3-2 victory. Sabatura assisted on the game's first goal in the opening half, extending the team's streak of scoring in the first period of every game this season. September 14 - Katie Ryan Named to BIG EAST Honor Roll For the second time this season, the BIG EAST Conference has named sophomore forward Katie Ryan (Wayne, N.J.) to its weekly honor roll, the league announced today. Ryan is receiving weekly recognition from the league for the fifth time in her career. In victories over Vermont (2-1, double overtime) and Delaware (2-0) this past week, Ryan scored three of the four Villanova goals. Her tally with 4:30 left in regulation against the Catamount opened the scoring, while her goal in the 103rd minute sent the Wildcats to their fifth victory of the season. The two scores marked Ryan's second career multi-goal game. Against the Blue Hens on Sunday afternoon, Ryan scored her seventh goal of the season in the second half to insure what had been a tenuous 1-0 advantage for Villanova. She has registered at least one point in all seven games this season and has notched a goal in six of the team's seven contests. Through this past weekend's games, Ryan is leading the BIG EAST in goals, points and shots. She has tallied seven goals and two assists for a total of 16 points, while delivering game-winning goals against Temple and Vermont. In just 25 collegiate games, Ryan has amassed 15 goals and six assists for 36 points. The goal total is tops among current Villanova players, while her 36 points are tied with senior midfielder Erin Byrnes (Sayville, N.Y.) for the most on the active roster. September 28 - Heidi Sabatura Earns BIG EAST Rookie of the Week Honors Freshman forward Heidi Sabatura (Lawrenceville, N.J.) has been named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week for the third time this season, the conference announced this afternoon. In an undefeated week for Villanova (1-0-1), Sabatura played a part in three of the team's four goals. The Wildcats started the week with a 3-1 victory over Seton Hall on Friday afternoon. Sabatura netted the first goal of the game less than five minutes into the contest and later closed the scoring with the third Villanova goal in the 24th minute. It was the second multi-goal game of the season for Sabatura, who ranks second on the team with six goals this season. On Sunday evening, the Wildcats traveled to No. 17 Rutgers for their first game of the season against a nationally-ranked opponent. The contest resulted in a 1-1 draw and Sabatura registered an assist on the Villanova goal in the 25th minute. She played a ball back to teammate Rachel Schuyler (Cheshire, Conn.), who scored just beneath the crossbar to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. When the game ended in a 1-1 tie, it extended Villanova's dominance when scoring a game's first goal to 113-1-7 since November, 1999. Sabatura has played in 10 of the first 11 games for the Wildcats this season and tallied 16 points (six goals, four assists). She is currently tied for third place in the BIG EAST in both goals and assists and is in fourth place in points. Sabatura was also named the league's Rookie of the Week on August 24 and September 8. October 5 - Villanova Ranked No. 34 in First Release of RPI Rankings The first release of the NCAA-generated Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) came out this week and Villanova is ranked No. 34 among 322 Division I programs. The Wildcats are fourth-highest among the 16 BIG EAST schools and sit nearly 60 spots ahead of where they finished the 2008 season. The RPI is a formula used to measure a program's overall strength based on its won-loss record and strength of schedule. The calendar is now far enough into conference play, and just enough removed from non-conference games, to take a look back at where Villanova has been in terms of its strength of schedule. One of the earliest games the Wildcats played this season was at home against Virginia Tech on August 28, a match that Villanova won in double overtime by a 2-1 final. The Hokies, fresh off wins last week against Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) powers Virginia and North Carolina, have vaulted into the national rankings with a 10-2 record. Virginia Tech is No. 7 in the first RPI report, giving the Wildcats a key victory against a top team. Nine days after the win over the Hokies, Villanova was on the road to play defending Atlantic 10 champion Charlotte. A back-and-forth contest resulted in another win for the Wildcats, who edged the 49ers, 3-2. Charlotte is also off to a 10-2 start to the year, once again leads the A-10, and stands at No. 57 in the RPI. The wins over Virginia Tech and the 49ers are the highest rated victories for Villanova, which is 2-3-1 against the RPI top 100. The team also has a tie against No. 79 Nebraska, which improved its record to 7-3-2 with two wins in Big 12 play last week. October 12 - Katie Ryan and Kelly Eagan Receive BIG EAST Weekly Honors Sophomore forward Katie Ryan (Wayne, N.J.) and senior defender Kelly Eagan (St. James, N.Y.) each have been honored by the BIG EAST this week for their efforts in helping Villanova win a pair of games over Cincinnati and Louisville. Ryan was named the Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career, while Eagan was selected to the weekly honor roll. Ryan had one goal and one assist in each of the Wildcats games last week, as the team posted a 3-1 win over Cincinnati and then shutout Louisville, 2-0. In the win over the Bearcats on Friday afternoon, Ryan scored the eventual game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the 33rd minute as Villanova overcame an early 1-0 deficit. Ryan also assisted on the game-tying goal midway through the first half. In Sunday afternoon's win over Louisville, Ryan set up the game's first goal midway through the first half and then scored her BIG EAST-best 10th goal of the season in the second half. She has tallied at least one point in 11 of her 14 games on the year and is the first Wildcat with at least 10 goals in a season since 2006. Ryan is leading the team with 10 goals, six assists and 26 points for the season. Eagan was a key part of a Villanova defense that allowed a combined total of just 11 shots in the two games last week. The Wildcats allowed a goal to Cincinnati just 1:31 into the contest and then played 178 minutes of scoreless defense the rest of the weekend. Villanova wound up with an 18-4 shot advantage over the Bearcats and won a game in which the other team scored first for only the 16th time in the last 13 years. The 2-0 win over Louisville was also the fourth shutout of the season for the Wildcat defense, which is allowing just 6.1 shots on goal per game for the year. Villanova lowered its scoring defense to a 1.01 goals-per-game mark and is now outscoring the opposition by a 29-16 margin. The Wildcats held Louisville to just seven shots in the shutout win. The victories over Cincinnati and Louisville avenged losses to both teams on the road late last season that eliminated the Wildcats from contention for a spot in the 2008 BIG EAST Championship. Villanova also moved to.500 in conference play (3-3-1) for the first time this season and moved up to fourth place in the National Division standings.

October 20 - Kelly Eagan and Molly Williams Earn Weekly Accolades Villanova posted a pair of shutouts against West Virginia and Pittsburgh last week and extended its scoreless streak on defense to nearly 400 minutes. Senior defender Kelly Eagan (St. James, N.Y.) and senior goalkeeper Molly Williams (Hinsdale, Ill.) helped to lead that defensive effort and each has been earned a weekly honor. Eagan earned a spot on the weekly BIG EAST Honor Roll and Williams was named a CollegeSoccer360.com Primetime Performer of the Week. The shutouts against the Mountaineers and Panthers last week give the Wildcats three straight shutouts and six overall this season. Since giving up a goal to Cincinnati on October 9 just 1:31 into the game, Villanova has played the last 398:29 without allowing another score. The team worked overtime in the two most recent shutouts, as both games against West Virginia and Pittsburgh resulted in a scoreless tie. Eagan garnered a spot on the honor roll for the second straight week and has now received weekly recognition from the BIG EAST nine times during her career. In addition to leading the defense in the two games last week, she moved into a tie for third place in school history with 79 career games started. Eagan has started every team game in her four-year career and is tied with Kayce Blandford (2004-07), four starts behind Jennifer Carrigan (1999-02) in second place. Williams registered her fourth and fifth solo shutouts of the season last week and has now tallied eight of her 12 career shutouts against BIG EAST opponents. She made 10 saves in the game against West Virginia, including a reaching twohanded save in the first overtime period on a ball that appeared to be curling just under the crossbar. Williams also had three saves against Pittsburgh as the Wildcats shutout the Panthers for the fifth straight meeting between the teams. Villanova is now 10-3-4 on the season and 3-3-3 in BIG EAST play with two regular season games remaining this coming weekend. The Wildcats are in position to contend for one of two remaining spots from the National Division in the BIG EAST Championship that begins next week. October 30 - Byrnes Named to Academic All-District Second Team Senior midfielder Erin Byrnes (Sayville, N.Y.) has been named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 2 second team. Byrnes earns all-district recognition for her combination of academic success and her contributions to Villanova on the field. This season, Byrnes is one of four players on the Wildcats who have started all 20 games. Her five assists are tied for second on the team and she is third on the squad with nine points. Byrnes has registered two assists in a game twice this season, with those occasions coming in wins over Vermont and Seton Hall. She also has scored two goals on the year, including a game-winner against Davidson. Byrnes has played in 80 games during her four-year career for Villanova and made 52 starts. Her career totals include 12 goals, 14 assists and 38 points, with four game-winning goals. Byrnes leads all current members of the roster with her career assist total and is second among active players in career goals. Off the field, Byrnes carries a 3.39 GPA as a Communications major and is a three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star. The Wildcats are fresh off advancing past Connecticut in the first round of the BIG EAST Championship on Thursday afternoon. Byrnes was one of 14 players from BIG EAST teams to receive a nod to the Academic All-District teams. NEWS AND NOTES (continued) 2009 Season November 3 - Molly Williams Earns Second Weekly Award of Season For the second time in the last three weeks, senior goalkeeper Molly Williams (Hinsdale, Ill.) has received a weekly award for her recent play in front of the net for Villanova. It was announced late today that Williams had earned a spot on the Performers of the Week list released by CollegeSoccer360.com. She also was mentioned on the website's weekly list on October 20. The Wildcats are coming off two games in the BIG EAST Championship last week. In a first round game, Villanova tied Connecticut, 1-1, at home before advancing on penalty kicks with a 4-1 edge. In a quarterfinal game this past Sunday, the Wildcats were eliminated from the conference tournament in a 1-0 loss to American Division champion Marquette. As she has done all season long, Williams came up big in goal for Villanova in its two conference tournament games. In the 1-1 tie against the Huskies, she made 11 saves to preserve the 1-1 score and allow the game to get into penalty kicks. In the shootout session, Williams made another save on an attempt by Connecticut just before the Wildcats fired in the decisive kick. Williams went on to have seven saves in the loss at Marquette, with the only goal of that contest coming on a windblown corner kick that caromed off the far goalpost and into the net before either Williams or any players from the Golden Eagles could get to it. The tally of 18 saves in two games last week moves Williams into the BIG EAST lead for saves this season. She has recorded a conference-best 116 saves and now sports a 0.89 goals-against average with an.859 save percentage. After not playing in this year's season opener, Williams has started the last 20 games in the net for Villanova. Her career record as a starter is 22-11-6. November 5 - Heidi Sabatura Named BIG EAST Rookie of the Year Freshman forward Heidi Sabatura (Lawrenceville, N.J.) was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year and was one of three Villanova players to earn All- BIG EAST accolades on Thursday evening when the league announced its postseason awards at the Hartford Hilton Hotel. The annual conference banquet was held there on the eve of the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship. Sabatura is the first Wildcat player ever named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year and she also received second team All-BIG EAST honors. In addition, senior Kelly Eagan (St. James, N.Y.) was chosen for the first team all-conference list and sophomore forward Katie Ryan (Wayne, N.J.) joined Sabatura on the second team. It has been a sensational freshman campaign thus far for Sabatura, who is currently second on the team with seven goals and 19 points. Her five assists are also tied for second on the team and she was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week three different times during the season. Sabatura made her mark early on this season, as she registered two goals and one assist in a season-opening 4-0 win over Temple. She continued her success against league opponents, with a two-goal game against Seton Hall as well as one goal in a win over Cincinnati. In the first round of the BIG EAST Championship, Sabatura helped Villanova play to an eventual 1-1 tie against Connecticut by setting up the game's first goal just 26 seconds into the contest. Eagan is only the third Wildcat to be a four-time All-BIG EAST selection and the second (Jillian Loyden) to be a three-time first team all-conference honoree. The only player to have even appeared in every team game for the past four seasons, Eagan has started every Villanova game in her career and is tied for second place in program history with 83 games started. This season, Eagan leads a Wildcat defense that has posted seven shutouts while outscoring opponents by a 31-20 margin. Also an offensive threat, she has a pair of game-winning goals against Virginia Tech and Seton Hall. Eagan also delivered the decisive penalty kick that lifted Villanova past UConn in the first round of the conference tournament. The focal point of an improved Wildcat offense this season is Ryan, who leads the entire BIG EAST Conference in points season and is tied for the league lead in goals scored. She also is tied for third in assists. In 20 starts on the year, Ryan has tallied 11 goals, seven assists and 29 points to lead Villanova in all three categories. She is the first Wildcat since 2006 and just the second since 2001 with at least 10 goals in a season, and her four game-winning goals are a team-best. While the BIG EAST head coaches recognized as Co-Offensive Players of the Year a pair of forwards that are tied for fifth in the league in scoring, Ryan is perhaps among the most consistent offensive performers among league teams. Of the 14 games this season in which Villanova has scored at least one goal, Ryan has at least one goal or one assist in 12 of them.

November 10 - Villanova Earns At-Large Bid to NCAA Championship For the sixth time in school history, Villanova (11-5-5) is headed to national postseason play, as the 64-team field for this year's NCAA Championship was revealed Monday night in a live telecast on ESPNEWS. The Wildcats earned an at-large bid based on their strength of schedule and overall record and will play against Washington State (13-5-2) on Friday night in a first round game that will be contested in College Park, Md. Villanova is appearing in the NCAA Championship for the sixth time in school history and the fifth time as an atlarge selection. Four teams were seeded in each of four regional brackets, and Maryland received a No. 4 seed in its bracket. While the host Terrapins will play Monmouth (15-4-1) in a first-round game at 5 p.m. on Friday, the Wildcats will follow at 8 p.m. against Washington State. The Cougars earned an at-large bid out of the Pacific 10 Conference. Villanova gathered on campus as a team Monday evening to watch the unveiling of the brackets. Anxiety turned to euphoria as the team was displayed during the second half of the selection show. The Wildcats bring to the table an incredibly strong resume from the 2009 campaign. Villanova has played eight of its 21 games against teams that are included in the NCAA field, including wins over tournament teams Virginia Tech (a No. 3 seed) and Davidson (winner of the Southern Conference). The Wildcats went 2-2-4 down the stretch to move into the top four in the National Division of the BIG EAST Conference. Villanova advanced out of the first round of the conference tournament on penalty kicks over Connecticut before falling to eventual league runner-up Marquette in the quarterfinals. The Wildcats were rewarded for their success against a demanding BIG EAST Conference schedule. The league placed seven teams in the 64-team field on Monday night, the highest total for the conference since 2006 and the secondhighest total ever. As strong a resume as Villanova had prior to the selection show, the pedigree of the program once in the NCAA Championship is just as impressive. The Wildcats are 4-1 in NCAA first-round games, with the only loss coming on penalty kicks to Yale in 2002. Villanova is fourth among all BIG EAST teams with six NCAA Championships bids and the team has advanced as far as the Sweet 16 (2003). On Friday night at Ludwig Field in Maryland, the Wildcats will contend with a Washington State team that went 5-2-2 against other Pacific 10 teams during the season and was 8-3 out of conference. The Pacific 10 does not have a conference tournament. The Cougars have scored 41 goals while giving up just 18 in their first 20 games of the year. This season marks the first NCAA bid since 2006 for Villanova, which advanced into the second round in its last appearance.
