That season they beat Mid-Continent and ETSU to open the year. With a win today, they will move to 3-0 for the first time since 1993-94 when they beat NKU, Loyola-Chicago, and Thomas More. That season, they finished 14-14. THE INTERSTATE 64 BATTLE Tonight s contest will be the 98th meeting between Marshall and Morehead State. Marshall owns a 50-47 advantage in the series, but the Eagles have won the last three. Last season, the Eagles utilized a balanced attack to down Marshall, 85-61. The Eagles outrebounded the Herd, 45-27, and held a 50-20 advantage in points in the paint. The MSU bench outscored Marshall, 44-20. MSU shot 53 percent to MU s 36 percent. Head coach Sean Woods holds a 3-1 record against the Herd at MSU. QUICK STARTS The Eagles got off to a 21-0 start against KCU and a 12-0 start against Lipscomb. RICO IS A DOUBLE-DOUBLE MACHINE Senior DeJuan Marrero scored 17 points and recorded 16 rebounds for his seventh career double-double against Lipscomb on Sunday. THE NEW FLOOR GENERAL Sophomore guard Malik Maitland set career highs with 20 points and six steals in the Eagles opener vs. KCU. He had three three-pointers and 12 points before the first media timeout and helped MSU jump out to a 21-0 lead. He shot 7-9 from the floor and 5-6 from three-point range. He had five points and eight assists in the win over Lipscomb. DOING THE DIRTY WORK Morehead State s rebounding margin is +20.5 through two games after outrebounding KCU, 43-25, in their opener and then outrebounding Lipscomb, 46-23. They have 35 offensive rebounds in their first two games. The Eagles are outscoring opponents in the paint, 98-30, through two games after outscoring KCU in the paint, 56-14, and then outscoring Lipscomb, 42-16, down low. They had 44 points off turnovers in the win over KCU. RETURNING STARTERS Morehead State returns two starters from last year s team, including senior Xavier Moon, a preseason All-OVC selection, who averaged 10.2 points and ranked seventh in the OVC with a 41 percent shooting percentage from three-point line. The other returning starter is senior DeJuan Marrero. Junior Miguel Dicent and sophomore Malik Maitland also return after making a combined 20 starts. MOON NAMED PRESEASON ALL-OVC Senior Xavier Moon played in 37 games last year, with 21 starts. He tied for second on the team with 10.2 points per game, while averaging 2.6 rebounds. He drilled 48 percent from the field and 77 percent from the free-throw line. He had a career-high 25 points at JSU on 2/27, while shooting 7-10 from floor, 3-4 from three, 8-8 from FT line and pulled down career-high seven rebounds. He ranked seventh in the OVC in three-point field goal percentage (41). MARRERO RECOGNIZED BY INDY STAR Senior DeJuan Marrero was named to the Indy Star s All-Indiana Third Team, which is awarded to players from the state of Indiana. He played in 37 games last year, with 25 starts. The native of Gary, Ind. averaged 8.2 points and 7.2 rebounds, while shooting 47 percent from the field. He had six double-doubles. He ranked fifth in the OVC in rebounding (7.2 average / 266 total). 20-WIN SEASON Morehead State recorded its seventh 20-win season in program history in 2015-16. Five of those 20-win campaigns have come in the previous eight years and head coach Sean Woods has led MSU to 20-plus wins twice in four years. With 23 wins on the year, the Eagles recorded the most victories since they finished the 2010-11 season at 25-10. 11-5 IN THE OVC Last season, the Eagles recorded 11 wins in OVC play for the first time since they won 13 in 2010-11. That season they played 18 OVC games and finished 13-5. WE WENT TO THE SHIP With their trip to the CBI Championship last season, Morehead State participated in its first ever national postseason championship game. When the Eagles played Game 3 of the CBI Finals on April 1, it marked just the second ever game played in April by an OVC team. Murray State also played in April in 2014. FOUR POSTSEASON WINS Last season, for the first time in program history, the Eagles won four postseason games in one season. MSU previously won two postseason games in 1956 and 1961. In both seasons, they won an NCAA Regional quarterfinal game and then a Regional third place game. ON TO THE POSTSEASON Morehead State has made ten postseason appearances. The Eagles have advanced beyond the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament in five of the past eight seasons. MSU participated in the College Basketball Invitational in 2010, 2014 and 2016. THE MAN IN CHARGE Sean Woods, who has been associated with six Division I men s basketball programs, is in his fifth season as the head coach at Morehead State. It is also his ninth season as a Division I head coach and 14th year of coaching at the collegiate level. Woods guided Morehead State to a 23-14 record and a trip to the CBI Finals in 2015-16. He is 75-63 in his first four seasons and his 75 wins in his first four years is the most for any coach in program history during that span. PLAYING ON TV Morehead State will play on television at least four times in 2015-16. In conference play, Morehead State will play two games on ESPNU, one on CBS Sports Network and one on American Sports Network. Morehead State s ESPNU broadcasts will take place when they host Belmont on Thursday, Jan. 12 at 7 p.m. ET and when then travel to Tennessee State on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 9 p.m. ET. MSU s home game against Tennessee Tech on Thursday, Feb. 23 has been selected by the CBS Sports Network and their road contest at Jacksonville State on Saturday, Jan. 28 has been selected by the American Sports Network. The Eagles will have two more ESPN telecasts if they advance to the championship game of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament. It is also his ninth season as a Division I head coach and 14th year of coaching at the collegiate level. Prior to the 2016-17 season, Woods signed a contract extension with Morehead State through 2019-20. He has more wins in his first four seasons than any coach in program history. He has mentored 11 professional athletes in four seasons at Morehead State. Before taking the reigns at MSU, Woods led Mississippi Valley State to 50 overall wins and 44 Southwestern Athletic Conference victories from 2008-12. The 2011-12 Delta Devils finished 21-13 overall, 17-1 in the SWAC, won the conference tournament and advanced to the school s fifth-ever NCAA Tournament. MVSU improved by 14 overall wins and 10 conference victories from his first season to his fourth. Woods was recognized as the 2011-12 SWAC Coach of the Year and earned the prestigious Ben Jobe Award, which honors the top minority coach in NCAA Division I men s college basketball. Prior to accepting the head position in Itta Bena, Miss., Woods spent time on the coaching staffs at TCU (2006-08), Texas A&M Corpus Christi (2005-06) and High Point (2003-05).
