Flies & Lies NEWSLETTER OF THE FLYFISHERS OF NORTHWEST FLORIDA MARCH 2014 THE FLYFISHERS OF NORTHWEST FLORIDA PO BOX 1041 PENSACOLA, FL 32591 www.flyfishpensacola. com PRESIDENT Cliff Newton (850) 637-3367 ccnewton@gmail.com VICE-PRESIDENT SECRETARY Kent Reagan (850) 696-2862 kwreagan@msn.com TREASURER Jay Brykczynski (850) 232-7504 jaybryk@yahoo.com NEWSLETTER Roy Turner (850) 516-2607 yoyodclown@yahoo.com MONTHLY MEETINGS Meetings at Miraflores Park 17th Avenue between Belmont and LaRua BUSINESS MEETING 1ST TUESDAY, 7 PM BULL SESSION 2ND THURSDAY, 6:30 PM CASTING & TYING CLINIC 3RD SATURDAY, 9 AM President s Message.Cliff Newton Hopefully most of the really cold weather is behind us and we can all get out fishing. There are just a few things I want to talk about this month. First is our upcoming fly fishing course starting Monday Night March 10 th. Russ Shields is doing all the heavy lifting in organizing and preparing for the course and we have a number of members who have volunteered to teach fly tying. But we will need help working with the students one on one for both tying and learning to cast. Please try to come one or more Monday Nights to lend a hand. I have always found that teaching a skill sharpens my technique in accomplishing that skill. Second, one of our newer members, Gary Shoman, is going to give the program at our next general membership meeting on fly fishing in Europe. It should be very interesting and I am sure we will all learn something. We are still looking for a Vice-President and for people to volunteer to give programs. The programs can be anything that loosely relates to fly fishing, i.e. boating or conservation are good subjects. There will be a board meeting on March 4th at 6:00 PM to discuss the upcoming course, followed be a general membership meeting at 7:00 PM. Hope to see a big turnout Cliff Newton (See page 7 for course outline and schedule) Fellow Fly Fishers, On Monday March 10th we will begin our 2014 Fly Fishing Course. As is the case every year, we cannot conduct this course with maximum help from our club members. We will need help from class room "monitors" in teaching the various flies and lots of help in the casting instruction portion of our classes. How well we help our students is a direct reflection on us as a vibrant club so I urge you to help out as much as you possibly can. Check out the Course Outline and decide where you want to help. We simply cannot run the course without your considerable help. Cheers, and Thanks in Advance! Russ 1

Fishing Report. Captain Baz Yelverton I won't have a report this month. Sorry. Only ran one fly-fishing trip, and that was today. My client Jeannette Launer from Portland, Oregon, did land a beauty on a tan/white clouser minnow. Here's a photo... Around the Bay.and Further Away Just a reminder that yes it will soon be spring and that means spring cleaning time. And while your doing that spring cleaning, look around to see what you can donate to the auction. We need rods, reels, boxes of flies, books, all kinds of gear. If you have a boat how about a day trip. The auction is just around the corner, May 6, so start planning now! Terry, your auctioneer. The Tip Jar. Go to www.orvis.com/tvflies They have The 20 Most Popular Fly Selection 20 of the best Trout Flies for only $9.95, including free shipping. Includes fishing tips on when and where to use each trout fly. Only one selection per household. Bob Korose 7 3

Jointed Minnow by Kent Reagan Originally tied by: Baz Yelverton Many of us are familiar with this pattern created and made famous by our very own Captain Baz Yelverton. This has become the go to fly for fishing the surf here in Pensacola. Originally designed for Pompano this fly is also great for Red Fish. Overall this is an easy fly to tie, so make sure you add some to your fly box. Following is the way I tie this fly and hopefully Baz would approve. Let s get started. Materials Pompano Rocket Hook: Mustad 34007 or equivalent Size 4 or Size 1 Thread: Red Flat Waxed Nylon Eyes: 5/32 Gold Dazzle Eyes for size 4, 2/16 Gold Dazzle Eyes for size 1. Tail: Yellow Bucktail Collar: Gold Mylar Tubing Step 3: Cut an approximately 2 inch section of the Gold Mylar Tubing and remove the inner core. Flatten out the mylar tubing and using your bodkin poke a hole through the center of the segment. Insert the hook eye through the hole and flatten out the mylar tubing pulling it back to and between the Dazzle Eyes. Secure the tubing just behind the eyes making a small band of thread. Step 1: Lay down a thread base and tie in Dazzle Eyes 1/3 of the way back from the eye which is just forward of the half way point on the shank. Step 4: Whip finish in place, just behind the Dazzle Eyes, and cut off your thread. Take your bodkin and unravel the gold mylar tubing. Tease the strands out spreading them around the entire fly. Step 2: Tie in the yellow bucktail just behind the eyes making sure to fan it out between the eyes. Make a nice coned nose to the fly and wrap back to just behind the Dazzle Eyes where the finally wrap should be. The overall length of the fly should be about 2 ¾ inches. Step 5: Use Sally Hansen s Hard as Nails, Zapa-gap or equivalent product and coat the thread wraps on the fly. Go fish and don t forget to visit www.usmcflyguy.com! 4
