The Tell Tale The Point Yacht Club Newsletter April 2013 Vol. 11, No. 3 Commodore s Log The 2013 sailing season got underway March 16 with Wheelbarrow Race which has become the traditional opening race. Several familiar boats were missing as Fleet Captain Sykes fired the gun signaling the start of the race. Over the past year Soul Mate, Pura Vida, Pelican, Caddy Wampus and Bajan have all sailed away to new owners. One new boat, Chanticleer, owned by our newest members Bill and Sharon McGarry showed up to enjoy what was described as a perfect day on Perdido Bay. Congratulations to Phil Turner in Horse With No Name for crossing the finish line first. Rip Tide took second place and Zig Zag came in third. Holding with tradition the winning captain was given first pick of the entry fees from the wheelbarrow followed by the second place and third place captains. The Wearing of the Green came a day early as hosts Brett and June Holk served corned beef and cabbage in a Saint Patrick s Day celebration at their home on Roberts. Please remember to thank Brett and June for opening their home to us. Great job on the corned beef and cabbage June and all the decorations were great. In this issue: P. 1-2 Commodore s Log P. 3 Activities Calendar P. 4 Social Committee P. 5 Fleet Captain s Signal P. 6 Race Rules P. 7 Notice of Race Cheeseburger Race P. 8 Fore Sail (buy & sell) & Local Cruising Opportunities The March Board of Governors meeting saw the approval of an operating budget for 2013. A copy of the budget will on the Financial Tab of our website www.pointyachtclub.org. It should be noted that a revised budget will be developed if we are successful in our efforts to construct a new clubhouse facility. April 1 was decided as the deadline for membership renewal in order to be included in the new directory. Those who renew after April 1 may not be included in the directory. Vice Commodore Abercrombie reviewed many additional cruising events in our area. Our Red Fish Point Raft Up is scheduled for May 18. Come for the day or the weekend. Doug reported that Palafox Marina offers a 10% discounts on slips and 10 cents per gallon discounts on fuel to yacht club members who use the code Club 13. I have been working on updating and enhancing our web site. We hope add a boat name column to our member information. There was much discussion of the Bear Point Marina proposal as well as the property on County Road 95. 1

Bert Taylor of the law firm Taylor- Ritter has agreed to review the lease provided by Bear Point and advise us on how to proceed. An estimate of $5400 was the reported cost for the necessary parking lot work at Bear Point. Gary Peaden and Paul Sykes have been in contact with the owners of two different water taxi services in an effort to provide transportation between Bear Point and the north shore during events. While one company seemed unable to provide service the other one was interested in getting more information. Details are being finalized and a business plan will be put together for the project. Bud Erikkson gave an overview of a piece of property that may become available in the coming months on County Road 95. The current owners of the property have indicated they are willing to work with the club in its effort to purchase one of the waterfront lots they are developing if an acceptable price can be agreed upon. Bud will continue to update as there are new developments. The BOG agreed to continue work on the Bear Point project as well as the second option. The Ingram Bayou Raft Up scheduled for Saturday March 23 was the victim of severe weather. To my knowledge there was only one boat that made it to the bayou during the day. Jay Warthen braved the weather on his Catalina 22, Hydro Therapy, but decided against staying overnight. Brett Holk and his merry band of pirates made it into the bayou on Double Dipper late in the afternoon only to limp back to Roberts Bayou in a drizzle. Keep an eye out for an email reporting an impromptu raft up in Ingram Bayou on a Saturday when the weather is more cooperative. April 7 will be Pensacola Yacht Club s Blessing of the Fleet. According to their flier All Pensacola Bay area boat owners and skippers are invited and encouraged to participate in this historic tradition. There is a $20.00 entry fee and the registration form is available on www.pensacolayachtclub.org. The next scheduled event for Point Yacht Club is Cheeseburger Race and Party April 13. Details of the race can be found in the Fleet Captain Sykes article. The party will be held at the Josephine Park off County Road 42. Make plans to join in on the fun. As we move from Spring to Summer warmer weather will no doubt beckon us to the water. It is my hope we will take an active role of promoting activities on the water. Fleet Captain s Signal Our traditional opening race, the Wheelbarrow, was sailed on a beautiful sunny day with winds in 6 to 8 knot range. We decided to reduce Phil Turner s PHRF rating since he is the defending Club Champion. The change from 270 to 250 did not change the outcome however, he still came in first. Perhaps more windy conditions will improve the competition. Six boats sailed and these are the results; 1st - Phil Turner - Horse With No Name 2nd - the McGonigal family - Rip Tide 3rd - Denny Blume - ZigZag 4th - Brett Holk - Dragon 5th - Vince Arbour - Miss Print 6th - Bill McGarry - Chanticlear The second race in our Club Series is the Cheeseburger, which will be sailed on April 13th. The Notice of Regatta is shown below. Paul Sykes Fleet Captain Continue to next pages for Sailing Instructions And Notice of Race (NOR) for Cheeseburger Race 5
