THE LAST TIME VS. NORTH FLORIDA Coastal Carolina 37, North Florida 67 Nov. 28, 2011 Jacksonville, Fla. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Coastal Carolina women s basketball team suffered its first setback of the season with a 67-37 loss at North Florida. The Chanticleers fall to 4-1 on the young season as North Florida improves to 1-5. North Florida used its aggressive, swarming defensive pressure to hold Coastal to a season-low 25.0 percent from the field and force 25 Chanticleer turnovers, which the Osprey s turned into 29 points. North Florida is a much better team than the record shows, said head coach Alan LeForce. Their play on the defensive end of the floor was exceptional. They forced us into some bad situations; we panicked and turned the ball over. For some reason, we did not come into this game as confident as we needed to be and that showed on the court tonight. The teams exchanged baskets in the early going of the first half with Coastal holding a two point advantage through the first five minutes of play. However, a seven-plus minute Chanticleer scoring drought coupled with a 14-2 North Florida run sent the teams into the locker room with the Ospreys leading 29-14. During the run, UNF took advantage of seven Chanticleer turnovers and converted them into nine points. The halftime deficit was the first for the Chants this season. The Ospreys used a quick 11-4 run to open the second half to extend their lead to 40-19 with 14:32 to play. Coastal responded with a 6-2 run of its own as Angelica Henry scored on two mid-range jumpers and Shanika Maddox scored in the paint. Larkira Jones halted Coastal s momentum on the ensuing possession with a layup in the paint to bring the score to 42-21. The Chants would cut the North Florida lead down to 17 several possessions later on a Henry layup, but came no closer as the Osprey s finished the game on a 23-10 run. This was just one of those games where the further the game wore on the worse we seemed to shoot, said LeForce. We couldn t sustain any rhythm offensively and the players that usually step up in key situations struggled tonight. Kira Carter and Shatia Cole finished with a team-high eight points as Maddox led all players with nine caroms. North Florida was led by Brittany Kirkland s game-high 14 points on 6-of-17 from the floor and Fabiola Josil s eight boards. Last Time Out... Coastal Carolina 55, South Carolina State 78 Dec. 18, 2012 Orangeburg, S.C. Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center ORANGEBURG - South Carolina State shot 48.6 percent in the first half and 42.2 percent for the game to hand Coastal its second loss in the three days by a final of 78-55 on Tuesday evening at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center in Orangeburg, S.C. Coastal (6-4, 1-0 Big South) was paced by Kayla Cook s season-high 14 points, including 10 straight in the second half, on 5-of-8 from the field and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. Alexx Puckett posted Coastal s fourth double-double of the season, finishing with 13 points and 11 boards. Katelyn Connor joined Cook and Puckett in double figures with 10 points. SC State (8-2) also had three scored in double digits with Cabriel Duren leading the way with 15 points, while Kourtney Williams and Tiara Knotts chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively. The homestanding Bulldogs used an aggressive full-court pressure defense to force the Chanticleers into 19 turnovers. SC State scored 23 points off the Coastal errors, including several pull-up treys from Knotts. SC State opened on an 18-10 run over the initial five minutes of the game with numerous baskets coming on fast-break layups following Coastal Carolina turnovers. The Bulldogs then reeled off a 24-8 run over the next 10 minutes leading into the under-4 media timeout. During the run SC State knocked down a pair of threes and seven easy points from the charity stripe. A Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal Carolina University one of the most unique nicknames in all of sports. Chanticleer comes from Chaucer s Canterbury Tales and came to Coastal Carolina when the University was a member of the University of South Carolina system. A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barnyard with cunning and wit. His competitiveness never wanes as he battles to the end, using his brains to come out on top every time. And this season is no exception. The Chants rank in the top half of the Big South in every defensive category, including the top spot in scoring defense (48.0 ppg) and 3-point field goal defense (.200). NOT A BAD DEBUT Freshman Megan Pittman made her collegiate debut on Nov. 24 at IPFW after missing the first five games of the season recovering from an injury. The heralded Liberty, Ky., product scored four points and pulled down three rebounds, while also adding a blocked shot in her nine minutes of play. WHICH GUARD TO GUARD Through the first five games of the season the Chanticleers have relied heavily on their experience at the guard position. And guards Shatia Cole, AJ Jordan and Angelica Henry have not disappointed. Jordan leads Coastal in scoring averaging 13.0 per outing followed by Cole s 12.6 and Henry s 11.8 points per game. In addition, Henry leads the Chants on the glass, averaging 6.6 board per contest. 4 IN 7 Coastal Carolina will play its fourth game in the last seven days against IPFW. The Chants started its grueling week-long stretch with a win over Western Carolina on Saturday, Nov. 17 and followed with back-to-back blowout victories against Columbia (SC) and Southern Virginia on Nov. 19 and 20. ON THE DEFENSIVE Through the first two games this season the Chanticleers have forced their opponents into 45 turnovers, 21 of which have come by way of steals. In addition Coastal has dominated the defensive glass, hauling in 66 of their 101 boards on the defensive end. WHAT SOPHOMORE SLUMP? Sophomores AJ Jordan and Shatia Cole are unaware of the superstitious sophomore slump that tends to befall athletes. Through Coastal s two games, the duo led the team in scoring as Jordan averages 10.5 points and Cole 8.5. Furthermore, Jordan has already set or tied five statistical career-highs this season. YOUNG, SEASONED CHANTS The 2012-13 Chanticleers look like an extremely young team on paper without a senior on the roster. However, the Chants are a seasoned bunch, returning eight players who have seen significant action in their careers. 2012 All-Big South Freshmen Team selection Shatia Cole returns for her second season after ranking second on the team with 10.5 points per game a year ago. Guards AJ Jordan and Angelica Henry, who both made numerous starts last season, should also be in the fold as key contributers. Junior guard Kayla Cook will look to have a breakout season after 5.2 points and 3.1 rebounds per game as a sophomore. In all, the young Chants count 268 games played and 39 starts between them. MAY LeFORCE BE WITH YOU Head Coach Alan LeForce enters his 16th season at the helm of the Chanticleers holding a 215-211 record at Coastal and a 454-390 career record. LeForce s 215 wins on the Chanticleer side are 120 more than Gin Markland, Coastal s second all-time winningest coach. Additionally, LeForce is the only coach in NCAA Division I history to win 200-plus games as both a men s and women s head coach. TOUGH STRETCHES Coastal s 2012-13 schedule features a pair of tough stretches of games. The first comes after playing only two games to start the season. The Chants third, fourth, fifth and sixth contests of the season all fall within a seven-day time frame. Coastal first plays Western Carolina (Nov. 17) followed by Columbia College (Nov. 19) and Southern Virginia (20) all at home. The Chants then fly to Fort Wayne, Ind. for a road bout with IPFW on (Nov. 24). Coastal s second grinding stretch comes the week leading into the Christmas holiday.
