DEFENSE AND REBOUNDING = KEYS TO SUCCESS UNI head coach Ben Jacobson harps on defense and rebounding when it comes to success of the Panther basketball team and the numbers don t lie. When UNI outrebounds its opponent, the Panthers are 11-3 this season. However, when the opponent wins the rebounding battle, the Panthers are only 8-9. When the Panthers defend and hold the opposition to a lower shooting percentage, the Panthers are 15-3 this year. However, when the opposition shoots a higher percentage, the Panthers are only 4-10. UNI went 0-for-4 from 3-point land vs. the Salukis back in 2000. 18-PLUS WINS IN 9 STRAIGHT SEASONS UNI has won 18 or more games in nine straight seasons. UNI captured its 18th win of the season vs. Bradley (2/22). Prior to the 2003-04 season, UNI had won 18 or more games only six times in the history of the men s basketball program. 18-Plus Wins Prior to 2003-04 1961-62 - 19-5 1963-64 - 23-4 1978-79 - 18-11 1983-84 - 18-10 1988-89 - 19-9 1989-90 - 23-9 18-Plus Wins Since 2003-04 2003-04 - 21-10 2004-05 - 21-11 2005-06 - 23-10 2006-07 - 18-13 2007-08 - 18-14 2008-09 - 23-11 2009-10 - 30-5 2010-11 - 20-14 2011-12 - 19-13 WINNING TRADITION AT MCLEOD UNI has posted an all-time mark of 71-22 (.763) in games played in the McLeod Center. MORAN JOINS THE 1,000-POINT CLUB UNI senior guard Johnny Moran became the 34th member of the Panthers 1,000-Point Club in UNI s win over Bradley (2/22). Moran drained a 3-pointer with 16:10 left in the first half to eclipse the 1,000-point mark. Moran has scored 1,029 points, which is tied for No. 30 on the Panthers all-time scoring list. OUTSTANDING BOARDS VS. BRADLEY UNI owned a +10 rebounding margin (36-26) in his 64-55 win over Bradley (2/22). It marked the first time in over a year that UNI had held a double-figure lead in the rebounding battle. The last time it occurred came in a 65-53 win over Evansville in the McLeod Center (Jan. 4, 2011) when UNI held a 30-19 rebounding advantage over the Purple Aces. SONNEN S STRETCH KEYS PANTHER WIN AGAINST THE BRAVES UNI junior guard Marc Sonnen poured in 13 points in the Panthers 64-55 win over Bradley (2/22). Sonnen s early second-half scoring explosion allowed the Panthers to overcome a 30-24 halftime deficit. Sonnen scored eight points in the first 3:49 of the second half to help turn a six-point deficit into a four-point lead. Sonnen buried two 3-pointers and another two-point jumper in a 12-0 run that gave UNI a lead it would not relinquish against the Braves. Sonnen leads the Panthers this season with 54 3-pointers. He ranks fourth on the team in scoring at 8.5 points per game. RARE SWEEPS IN JACOBSON ERA Since Ben Jacobson took over the head coaching duties in 2006-07, the UNI program has only been swept in an MVC homeand-home series on seven occasions. Evansville was the seventh squad to sweep a Jacobson-coached Panther squad with its 63-62 win at the Ford Center (2/15). Earlier this season, Wichita State also swept the season series from the Panthers. Prior to this season, the only five times it has occurred have come vs. Indiana State (2010-11), Creighton (2006-07, 2007-08) and Drake (2006-07, 2007-08).

ON THE OTHER HAND UNI has swept an MVC opponent 19 times since the 2006-07 season. UNI has swept all nine opponents in the MVC at least once in that stretch. UNI swept the season series against Southern Illinois and Drake this year. UNI swept SIU for only the fifth time in school history. It was the ninth regular season series sweep of Drake since joining the MVC in the 1991-92 season. TOUGH LOSS AT EVANSVILLE UNI rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit with a 13-0 run midway through the half to take a 52-49 lead. However, Evansville used a pair of 3-pointers from Denver Holmes in the final 18 seconds, including the game-winner that was banked in with 0.6 seconds left. UNI s Johnny Moran drained a 3-pointer with 8.6 seconds left that gave UNI a 62-60 lead. Moran s shot came after Holmes had given the Purple Aces a one-point lead with 18 seconds left. DOUBLE DIGIT LEADS HAVE SLIPPED AWAY UNI is 9-9 in Missouri Valley Conference play but could be in much different shape had it held some leads that got away. The Panthers have squandered leads in seven of its nine league losses, including three double-digit advantages. UNI was up 14 points (22-8; 10:03 left in 1st half) vs. Evansville on Jan. 1 before falling to the Purple Aces, 76-65.
