CELEBRATING 15YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Asheville Chapter - American Singles Golf Association April 2008 Message from the President Starting in April we will have our monthly meetings at Rezaz restaurant in Biltmore Village, across the street from the world s fanciest McDonalds. The management at Rezaz agreed for us to use their private party room at the back of the Wine Bar without charge with the stipulation that everyone orders something. The cuisine is multi-stared Mediterranean with appetizers ($5-7.00), such as Fried Calamari, Roasted Butternut Squash Ravioli, Grilled Octopus and Veal Sweet Breads. The wines look interesting at $7-8.00 per glass, and non-alcoholic drinks are available. I m getting hungry just thinking about it and do hope that I ll see lots of you there. Another good eating place is Mario s Pizzeria in the Fresh Market Shopping Center on North Merrimon Avenue. We re going there after golfing at the Grove Park on April 19 th! There are lots of exciting outings scheduled this year. Bob Blaylock has revamped the Kodak multi-chapter event in June with a new hotel and dinner buffet. Our Asheville Chapter s first multichapter event is planned for October. Let the fun begin! ~Judy Clouse March Outing After a sunny and breezy day of golf, 13 of us converged on the patio at the HobNob in Brevard for Andy s presentation of the day s winners before going into the restaurant for dinner. The upscale entrees were a feast for the eyes, as well as the stomach; each one s colorful presentation resembled a beautiful piece of abstract art. A fly on the wall overheard snatches of lively and varied conversations such as learning that Bill Crawley s daughter was in an episode of Grey s Anatomy; that Jeune Reece is from Dry Fork, Virginia; that Marvin Watkins played center on his college s basketball team; that John Hill is full of corny jokes (ie, if you walk around your house in the buff, be sure to spray yourself with Windex so you won t streak ); that new member Deb Olsen has lived in 19 states; that both Deb and Jeune have identical twins; that Hank Parish picked up a new car on his way to play and didn t have time to listen to the salesman s how to instructions this led to his not knowing how to put the car into reverse and after golf, inadvertently putting it in drive and ending up on top of a railroad tie and having to enlist several men to lift it off; that Cliff Orr lost 3 balls on one hole; that Tracy Hall is leaving for a month s vacation in 3 days and hasn t started packing; that Bobbi Powers favorite line from the play The Great Trailer Park Musical was My life is falling apart just like my clothes from Wal-Mart ; and that Ed Younger stopped at a Costco on his way to golf and his trunk was filled with enough interesting beverages to keep him happy for weeks or perhaps months and then the fly flew away. And as the sun set, we golfers also flew away, tired but happy after a day on the links. And the winners were, after a score card playoff: 1 st Place Team: Jim Duval, Marvin Watkins, Tracy Hall and Alan Sanford. 2 nd Place Team: Hank Parish, William Crowley, Judy Elmore and Juene Reece. Golf Quips Golf is harder than baseball. In golf, you have to play your foul balls. Next Big Event: Reunion at Pinehurst, May 22-25. 400 ASGA members attended last year! Golf! You hit down to make the ball go up. You swing left and the ball goes right. The lowest score wins. And on top of that, the winner buys the drinks. If you find you do not mind playing golf in the rain, the snow, even during a hurricane, here's a valuable tip: your life is in trouble. Golfers who try to make everything perfect before taking the shot rarely make a perfect shot. The term "mulligan" is really a contraction of the phrase "maul it again." A "gimme" can best be defined as an agreement between two golfers...neither of whom can putt very well. An interesting thing about golf is that no matter how badly you play, it is always possible to get worse. Golf's a hard game to figure. One day you'll go out and slice it and shank it, hit into all the traps and miss every green. The next day you go out and for no reason at all you really stink. I play in the low 80s. If it's any hotter than that, I won't play. If your best shots are the practice swing and the "gimme Putt," you might wish to reconsider this game. Golf is the only sport where the most feared opponent is you. To some golfers, the greatest handicap is the ability to add correctly. Golf is like marriage: If you take yourself too seriously, it won't work and both are expensive. Achieving a certain level of success in golf is only important if you can finally enjoy the level you've reached after you've reached it. The best wood in most amateurs' bags is the pencil. In golf, some people tend to get confused with all the numbers. They shoot a "six," yell "fore" and write "five." Swing easy. Hit hard. Why is it twice as difficult to hit a ball over water than sand? CELEBRATING 15YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION APRIL 2008 Event Dates: Thursday, May 22 Sunday, May 25, 2008 400+ Attended Past Two Years It s hard to imagine the level of excitement we re hearing from all corners of the earth about our upcoming Reunion at Pinehurst. There were two from our chapter last year and now we have eight coming, was a recent note sent to the national office. Comments like that are causing the level of registrations to continue to climb. It s anticipated to be another sellout again. Last year, we had to arrange overflow hotels at a couple of local hotels off property just to accommodate the number of people attending. We contracted form more rooms this year and more rooms at the Carolina Hotel, where most of the social activities will occur. We re well-set to handle 400+ again this year. Register by April 18 for Free Drink Tickets! There are always those last minute attendee-wannabees who d like to get in so to keep yourself from being one of those, register today. You can register online, or you can register using the form enclosed with this newsletter. A form can obtained at the event website: www.singlesgolf.com/pinehurst and at this same website, you ll now be able to register online. Website has full details The standard package is a great deal. If you priced this on your own, you d easily pay twice as much as what you get as an ASGA member. You can t fine a value like this at any great golf resort in the country. Of course, outside of everything Pinehurst has to offer, you get to meet hundreds of singles from various ASGA chapters. As with all ASGA multi-chapter events, you must be a member to attend. Here s what s included in the standard package: 4 days / 3 night s stay, based on double occupancy 2 rounds of golf, cart, range balls, prizes for winners + welcoming gift for all 6 food functions: cocktail party (with 2 free drink tickets if you register by April 18), cookout Friday after golf, Saturday sitdown dinner and 3 lavish buffet breakfasts (live piano playing!) Dancing with our DJ on 1st and 3rd nights (does he dance?) All resort service fees and taxes. The resort service fee pays for bicycle rental, practice green, afternoon tea, on-site trans- portation, fitness center, tennis courts, outdoor pools, etc. In addition, Pinehurst is offering ASGA members a coupon good towards a 25% discount on spa services or one round of golf club rentals. See SinglesGolf.com for details on this coupon. Non-golf packages are available and non-hotel packages are available only to our Pinehurst chapter members. Please review the Pinehurst.com website and check out their hotel accommodations. They re offering the Carolina Inn, the Holly Inn, Manor Inn and their condos again. In addition to these hotels, if your chapter (or group of friends) would like to get eight (8) of your members together and get a villa, which has a common living room and kitchen facility, review the Pinehurst.com website and indicate such on your registration form. Packages start at $512 per person, based on double occupancy and $779 per person based on single occupancy. If you priced this event on its own, you d easily pay $1200-$1300 (dbl. occ.) for all that s included. An optional round at 9:00am on Sunday is offered as well. Again, a registration form is enclosed with this newsletter and you can also obtain one at www.singlesgolf.com/pinehurst Google Docs and Spreadsheets It s rare that we mention other websites out there in internetworld, but here s something that can help you and your chapter. Google, several months ago, introduced Google Docs and Spreadsheets, which could be used by your chapter as a way of signing-up members for golf outings. So it s 11pm on Friday night, all of a sudden, you ve realized there s a golf outing tomorrow at 1pm and you d like to play in it. It s too late to call the event organizer, so you simply go to Google Docs and Spreadsheets, look up the event, and you now see that there is an opening. You simply add your name to the list and you're in! It almost that simple. Each member who wants to use the service must set-up an account with Google but the cool thing about this site is that it allows anyone in the chapter to collarborate, i.e. contribute something to the document or event. So if you re running a social and everyone has to bring a covered dish, you can see what others are bringing so there won t be 12 people bringing cheese balls and bean dip. So go to Google.com and clicking on the More button, then Documents. - - Tom Alsop, President/Founder, ASGA Phone 704-889-4600 or 1-888-GOLFMATE GolfASGA@aol.com
