BOSTON RED SOX (35-42) at SEATTLE MARINERS (41-36) Tuesday, June 24, 2014 10:10 p.m. ET Safeco Field, Seattle, WA RHP Jake Peavy (1-5, 4.52) vs. RHP Erasmo Ramirez (1-4, 4.62) Game #78 Road Game #39 TV: NESN Radio: WEEI 93.7 FM, WCEC 1490 AM (Spanish) YESTERDAY S GAME: The Red Sox lost to the Mariners last night at Safeco Field, 12-4, in the opener of a 3-game series...boston went ahead 1-0 and 2-1 against Felix Hernandez but was done in by a 6-run 4th inning, tied for the most runs allowed by the Sox this season in a single frame (also 4th inning on 4/21 vs. BAL). It ended a season-long 11-game streak over which Red Sox starters allowed 3 ER or less from 6/12-22 (Lackey, 7 ER)...Club starters had a 2.06 ERA (17 ER/74.1 IP) in that 11-game stretch. STATE OF THE SOX: Boston has lost 4 of its last 5 games following a 3-game winning streak...the Sox have taken 6 of their last 12, 7 of their last 14, and 8 of their last 16 contests...they are 15-13 since beginning with a season-long 7-game win streak from 5/26-6/1. The Sox are in 4th place in the AL East, 7.5 games back in the division, and are 6.0 games back in the race for the AL s 2nd Wild Card playoff berth. Boston is 35 days and 34 games (15-19) into a stretch from 5/20-6/25 in which the club plays 36 games in 37 days...their only off-day in this time was on 6/5. TIGHT GAMES: Last night s 12-3 loss matched the Sox largest margin of defeat in 2014 (9 R, also 14-5 on 4/24 vs. NYY)...Of the Sox 13 losses in June, they have been within 2 runs at some point in the 7th inning or later in 10 of them. Last night s loss came after 9 straight games decided by 2 runs or less from 6/14-22, over which the Sox were 4-5 and were outscored just 22-24...It was the club s longest single-season streak of 1- or 2-run games since the last 9 games of the 2000 season. RAZOR THIN: Of the club s last 10 games, 8 have been decided by just 1 run, with Boston going 4-4 in those contests. Boston has played an AL-high 29 1-run games this year, going 12-17 in those contests...in the majors, only Pittsburgh has played more 1-run games (32). The Sox 17 1-run losses are the most among AL teams and rank 2nd in the majors to the Mets (18). ROAD RUNNING: The Sox continue a season-long-tying 10-game road trip today with the 6th of 7 games on the west coast (1-4)...Boston took 1 of 4 in Oakland to open the series and dropped the 1st of 3 in Seattle last night. After Thursday s off-day, Boston ends the road trip over the weekend with 3 games at the Yankees, all national TV broadcasts: Friday night on MLBN (outside NESN territory), Saturday night on FOX, followed by the club s 5th appearance on ESPN s Sunday Night Baseball (2-2) this year, 3rd on the road (1-1). This road trip completes a 28-day, 26-game stretch (6/2-29) over which the Sox were slated for only 7 games in Boston, all in the just-completed homestand. HERO AGAIN: David Ortiz hit the deciding home run Sunday in Oakland, a go-ahead shot in the 10th inning...of his 17 home runs this season, 7 have given the Sox a lead, and 2 have tied the game. Of his last 4 HR, 3 have provided the tying or goahead run in the final inning of a Sox win: go-ahead 3-run HR, 6/8 at DET (9th inn.); tying solo HR, 6/18 vs. MIN (10th); go-ahead solo HR Sunday at OAK (10th). It was the 10th extra-inning home run of Ortiz s regular season career (also has 2 in postseason play)...among active players, only Albert Pujols (14) has as many extra-inning home runs. MOUND MATTERS: Boston ranks 2nd in the AL with a at 3.20 ERA in 27 games dating back to 5/27, trailing only its current opponent, Seattle (2.78)...Overall this season, the Sox rank 4th in the AL with a 3.73 ERA. Boston s bullpen has the 3rd-lowest ERA in the AL at 3.02, trailing only the Mariners (2.76) and A s (2.88)... The club s 46 quality starts this year rank 3rd in the AL behind only Oakland (49) and Kansas City (46). SOX AND M S: Tonight the Sox continue a 3-game set with the Mariners at Safeco Field, their 1st series of 2014... These clubs will close out their 6-game season set with 3 games in Boston, 8/22-24. The Sox took 5 of 6 games against the Mariners last year to claim the season set against Seattle for the 4th straight year and 5th time in the last 6 seasons. Last night s loss snapped the Red Sox 6-game win streak against the Mariners (last 6 matchups in 2013)...It marked Boston s longest win streak against Seattle since a 10-gamer from 8/30/91-5/20/92. NAVIGATING MARINERS: The Red Sox are 226-164 (.579) all-time against the Mariners, the top winning percentage for any American League club against Seattle since the Mariners 1st season in 1977. ON THE OFFENSE: Boston has scored 3 runs or less in 9 of its last 10 games beginning on 6/14, with Sunday s 7-6 win at OAK (10 innings) the only exception...the Sox have scored 25 total runs in that 10-game stretch. Among AL offenses, the Sox rank 3rd in walks (273) and 4th in times on base (950), but have scored 294 runs, 2nd fewest in the AL ahead of only TB (285). The Sox are seeing 4.03 pitches/pa, 2nd most in the majors to MIN (4.07)...They have reached base a MLB-leading 414 times on 2-strike counts. GOOD RETURNS: Mike Napoli has gone deep in each of Boston s last 2 games, with solo shots in the 4th inning last night off Felix Hernandez and in the 5th inning on Sunday off Tommy Milone...Napoli last homered in as many as 3 straight games when he did so in a career-high 5 consecutive games from 4/25-21/12 with TEX. In 16 games since returning from the DL on 6/8, Napoli has a.310 AVG/.375 OBP/.552 SLG/.927 OPS line...his 4 homers in that time are tied with David Ortiz for the most on the team, and 1 shy of the MLB lead (6 players with 5 HR). BROCK FROM THE TOP: In 1 month since being installed as the Red Sox leadoff hitter on 5/23, Brock Holt leads all major leaguers with 43 hits...he has played all 294 innings of Boston s 31 games in that time while making starts at 5 different positions (1B, 3B, LF, CF, RF). Holt has reached base safely via hit, walk, or HBP in 28 of his 32 total leadoff starts this season overall, and has a.319 AVG (45-for-141) from the top spot. His.318 AVG overall this season leads all MLB rookies with at least 150 PA, tops among all Red Sox this year. MILLENIAL MAN: David Ortiz is approaching his 1,000th career extra-base hit...with 530 doubles, 18 triples, and 448 home runs, he is 4 XBH shy of becomin gthe 36th player to reach the mark, the 16th left-handed hitter. Only 11 other players have ever tallied both as many doubles (530) and homers (448) as Ortiz right now. THE RIGHT FIGHT: The Red Sox have won 5 of their last 8 games when facing a right-handed starter despite a 21-29 (.420) overall record this season when opposing a righty. The club this year is 14-13 (.519) when facing a lefty starter but has lost its last 6 games started by LHPs. FUTURES NAMED: Red Sox prospects INF/OF Mookie Betts and LHP Henry Owens were named today to the Sirius XM Futures Game s World Team roster. STREAK SNAPPED: Koji Uehara earned the win Sunday despite suffering his 1st blown save in 16 chances this season...it snapped a streak of 31 straight regular season save convertions starting on 7/9/13, 2nd-longest in club history behind Tom Gordon s AL-record 54 straight from 1998-99. REHAB UPDATES: Shane Victorino, on the 15-day DL since 5/24 with a right hamstring strain, resumed his rehab stint last night, going 0-for-3 playing 5 innings in RF.
