FRIDAY 28 APRIL 2017 Head Master's BulletinPrep NewsJunior School News PDF Version SPORT Football Report St Andrew s Cup - Preseason 1st XI Tournament Trinity s 1st XI ventured to Football NSW at Valentine Sports Park and returned home with the St Andrew s Plate after beating Cranbrook 7-6 in a penalty shoot. Trinity had three group games on day one of the tournament and on day two, advanced to the final after beating St Ignatius in the semi-final.
Game 1 Vs Moriah College: 1-0 Win Trinity opened their cup campaign against Moriah College, who are currently back to back CIS Cup champions. The game was evenly poised in the first half with both teams slowly working their way into the match. The game opened up in the second half, providing both teams with opportunities on goal. Michael Dutton (12We) was impressive in midfield, controlling the tempo and distributing the ball with ease. It was the class of the young but determined Trinity side which prevailed late in the match, with Dean Bozionelos (12Ta) sending a great cross into the box with Ryan Maranik (12Ar) calmly heading the ball into the side netting, lending the boys in green a 1-0 win to start the tournament. A superb finish from our ever-improving target man! William Todd (12Ar) Captain of Football 2017
Game 2 Vs Cranbrook: 0-0 Draw Our second game of the day was against CAS arch-rivals Cranbrook, with the game ending in a controversial nil-all draw. The game was intense from start to finish, with great offensive and defensive plays from both schools. Trinity s defence was solid with only a few attacks breaking our defensive line. When Cranbrook had their attacking opportunities, Zac Kapetanellis (11Ke) and Joshua Hobden (12We) kept Trinity s clean sheet with great individual efforts in goals. Down the other end of the pitch, Trinity s attack was constantly piercing the back line of Cranbrook with many offensive shots at goal with numerous outstanding saves from the Cranbrook Goal Keeper. Despite numerous chances, the game finished at 0-0. Zac Lorusso (11He) Player Game 3 Vs Oakhill College: 1-4 Loss Trinity had their first loss of the tournament in game three. Trinity lost to Oakhill College 1-4, who went onto win the St Andrew s Cup. Following this last game, all fourteen teams were ranked on points and goal difference. Trinity was placed eighth and therefore moved into the plate section, which comprised teams fifth to eighth. Plate Semi Final Vs St Ignatius: 2-1 Win On the second morning, the team arrived nice and early, ready to kick off day two with a win and progress to the plate final. Match one was against Riverview College, with some fresh reinforcements coming from Yanni Plataniotis (9Sc), Nicholas Bakopoulos (9Mu) and Owen Duke (10Fo). Samuel York (10Hi) made a great cross into Ryan Marinak (12Ar) who slotted away the goal with a clean header. William Todd (12Ar) ploughed his way down the pitch playing one twos with his teammates to receive a cross into the box which he touched off to Jason Doric (12We) who placed a crisp shot into the bottom left. There were numerous great saves from Zac Kapetanellis (11Ke) as well as Joshua Hobden (12We) who played vital roles in the win. In the dying five minutes of the match Riverview put a goal of their own in to make the final score 2-1 in favour of Trinity, advancing the team to the plate final. Darcy Edwards (11WJ) Player Plate Final Vs Cranbrook: 1-1 Draw; 7-6 Penalty Shootout Win To conclude a difficult, yet successful competition, a Trinity outfit carrying a few injuries came up against a strong and well organised Cranbrook squad. Having drawn the previous encounter, both teams were well prepared and ready to come out for firing. An intense first half ended at nil-nil but plenty of opportunities came in an end-to-end game. The second half started not how Trinity anticipated as Cranbrook scored a soft goal and Trinity knew they
needed to up the ante in order to come back. After a strategic substitution by bringing on two quick wingers in Samuel York (10Hi) and Max McCluskey- Voigt (11Ar), the momentum swung trinity's favour as plenty of opportunities arose. We were well awarded with a fantastic strike by Samuel to level the score 1 all with four minutes to go. That strike brought the fixture into extra time which fired up the Trinity boys to push that extra ten minutes. The game reached a penalty shootout as nothing was able to separate the two squads. Trinity came out on top to secure the Plate by winning 7-6 as Joshua Hobden (12We) made a fantastic save. Penalty scorers included Ryan Maranik (12Ar), Sam York, Max McCluskey, Captain William Todd (12Ar), Christopher Monaha (12Mu), débutante Owen Duke (10La) and Adam Racheha (11He). Michael Dutton (12We) Player Independent Schools Cup Round 3 Vs Inaburra: 1-2 Loss On the last day of term one, Trinity ventured to Seymour Shaw Park to play the Inaburra School. Trinity scored through William Todd (12Ar) early in the first half after receiving a pin point ball from Jordan Kougias (12Ke). With just over ten minutes to go in the second half, Inaburra scored from a free kick missile taken from just outside the circle that went top corner. With five minutes to go, Inaburra were able to score the second and deciding goal of the game. April School Holiday Football Clinic A successful holiday Football clinic was conducted for Trinity boys from Kindergarten to Year 9 during the first week of the holidays. Boys developed their ball control, first touch, dribbling and shooting skills during the first session of each day. The second and third session involved small sided games with various formats such as A-League, Champions League and World Cups. Boys enjoyed several BBQs, had the opportunity to learn about Trinity Football history and were provided with tips on how to become better Football players. Thank you to former NSL player and Australian youth player Mr David Barrett for his organisation and coaching throughout the week. The next holiday clinic will be conducted in the third and last week of the July holidays. Registrations will open via a link in the Bulletin in coming weeks.
