The Panthers, however, defeated No. 17 Illinois, 18-15, at the Sprawl & Brawl Duals. Pitt is led by sophomore Tyler Nauman, who is ranked 19th by InterMat at 141 and has enjoyed a nearly perfect season entering the weekend with a 20-3 record. Nauman is perfect in dual matches with an 8-0 mark. Also having an outstanding year for Pitt are junior heavyweight Ryan Tomei with a 20-4 record on the season and freshman Anthony Zanetta at 22-6 in the 125 weight class. Tomei had possibly the most impactful day of his career on Dec. 12 when he earned a fall (4:02) over No. 8-ranked Dominc Russo of Rutgers for the Pitt win, and turned around to solidify the tie against Penn State with a major decision in the final bout of the day. Pitt vs. Eastern Michigan Eastern Michigan will travel to Seton Hill Friday night prior to visiting the Panthers on Saturday. The Eagles are 3-3-1 on the dual season entering the weekend. Pitt is 5-0 all-time against the Eagles incluidng a 22-16 in the 2004-05 season -- the teams most recent meeting. Pitt vs. Columbia Columbia enters the weekend with a 2-1-2 record on the dual season including a 41-3 win over Sacred Heart. The Panthers also defeated Sacred Heart, 35-6, earlier this season. Saturday will mark the first meeting between the two schools. Pitt vs. Waynesburg Waynesburg holds a 4-3 record entering the weekend. The Jackets feature two of the top wrestlers in Division III including junior wrestlers Nick Garber (141) and Corbin Semple (184), who both hold lofty rankings in the latest polls. Waynesburg is also coached by current Pitt wrestler Ethan Headlee s father, Ron. Ethan s brother, and former Pitt wrestler, Drew serves as an assistant. Drew was a three-time NCAA qualifier and 2005 All-American for the Panthers. Pitt holds a 7-5 record in the all-time series with Waynesburg. The 2010 meeting is the first since a 41-3 Pitt win in 1986. The series is one of the oldest in Pitt history with the first match
coming in the 1934-35 season. Rankings Respect In the latest InterMat poll, Pitt holds the following individual rankings: 125 -- #19 Anthony Zanetta 141 -- #19 Tyler Nauman 197 -- #19 Matt Wilps 285 -- #7 Ryan Tomei Movin On Up Redshirt sophomore Tyler Nauman entered the 2009-10 season No. 15 on the all-time pins list in Pitt history. Nauman has climbed to sole possesion of eighth on the list with six falls this season. Last year, Nauman won over a third of his matches by fall, finishing the year with 11 - the seventh most in a single season by a Pitt wrestler. So far this season, Nauman has notched six pins in 19 matches wrestled. Oh Brother... Pitt currently has two sets of brothers on the squad including sophomore Chris Albright and his brother, redshirt senior Eric Albright; as well as freshman P.J. Tasser and his brother, redshirt freshman Donnie Tasser. In addition, in Pitt s signing class, two more sets of brothers are set to join the squad. Sophomore Zac Thomusseit s brother Max signed a letter of intent with the panthers, as well as Matt Wilps brother Tyler. Open Success After a successful appearance at the Buffalo Open, the Panthers continued to make a mark at the Penn State Open on Dec. 6, where heavyweight Ryan Tomei (285) claimed a second place finish and five others placed. In the Clarion Open, Hunte earned a second place finish with a 3-1 mark. He s Back! Former Pitt wrestler Matt Kocher is back with the Panther program. This time, as an assistant coach. Kocher joined the Pitt staff this summer and has been an invaluable addition to the squad. While at Pitt, Kocher was a four-time NCAA qualifier and currently sits at second on the all-time wins list in Pitt history at 151-45.
