Strawberry scored 19 points, Ekene Ibekwe had 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Maryland beat Hampton Tuesday night to advance to the second round of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic. The Terrapins (1-0) on Wednesday will face Vermont, which cruised past New Orleans 82-65 in the opener of a doubleheader that drew a crowd of 7,148. The Terrapins led by 13 with eight minutes gone and by 25 late in the first half, even though coach Gary Williams used 11 different players in the opening 20 minutes. It was 51-34 early in the second half before a jumper by Mike Jones and a three-point play by Strawberry extended the lead. Hampton never cut the gap below 20 the rest of the way. JOHN S 60 Nov. 16, 2006 New York, N.Y. Madison Square Garden 2K Sports College Hoops Classic NEW YORK (AP) -Ekene Ibekwe bettered his career high by outscoring St. John s in the first half, and Maryland went on to a victory over the Red Storm on Thursday night in the semifinals of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. The Terrapins (4-0) advanced to Friday night s championship game at Madison Square Garden. Ibekwe, a 6-foot-9 senior who had 14 rebounds, scored all 22 of his points in the first half when he outscored St. John s (2-1) by one as Maryland took a 58-21 lead. His previous career best was 21 points, the last time against Boston College last season. St. John s just couldn t handle Maryland s pressure defense and the Red Storm committed turnovers on the first three possessions of the Terrapins 15-0 run that made it 25-6. Maryland simply had to make layups after turnovers - St. John s had 13 in the first half - to build the big lead, and the Red Storm couldn t make a shot when they did handle the pressure, shooting 21.2 percent (7-for-33) in the half, including 2-for-11 from 3-point range. D.J. Strawberry had 13 of his 19 points in the first half when the Terrapins shot 53.7 percent (22-for-41) and had a 29-16 advantage on the boards. Mike Jones added 18 points for Maryland, which was never behind in the game and has trailed this season for a total of 1 minute, 23 seconds. The Terrapins (5-0) were able to win despite scoring just two points over the final 3-1/2 minutes and survived a hectic ending. Michigan State (4-1) used a 6-2 run to get within 62-59 with 1:21 to play. Each team turned the ball over and Maryland called a timeout with 12 seconds to play and 4 seconds left on the shot clock. The Terrapins inbounded the ball near midcourt and freshman guard Eric Hayes was forced to let go a long 3-point attempt as the clock ran out. It appeared the ball missed the rim, which would have been a violation, but Michigan State s Idong Ibok grabbed the rebound. He turned with the ball with his arms raised and was called for an offensive foul. Strawberry, selected the tournament s MVP, missed two free throws with 4.5 seconds left. Michigan State s Drew Neitzel was fouled with 0.2 seconds left before he could get a shot attempt off. He made the first free throw and missed the second on purpose but the Spartans couldn t get off a clean tip. Neitzel hit a 3 with 5:19 left to get the Spartans within 52-51, but Mike Jones and Greivis Vasquez each hit a 3 in an 8-2 run that put the Terrapins up 60-53 with 3:42 left. James Gist, who had 14 points, capped that run with a dunk with 3:42 left, Maryland s last field goal of the game. Maryland, which crushed St. John s 92-60 in its semifinal, forced Michigan State into 18 turnovers, three off its average for the first four games of the season. ekene ibekwe hoists the 2k sports college hoops classic championship trophy.

(AP) - Maryland freshman Greivis Vasquez wasn t bothered by Illinois loud homecourt that has been intimidating to visiting non-conference schools for eight years. Terps teammate Mike Jones even likened the atmosphere to the raucous one at Duke s Cameron Indoor Stadium. Tuning out the orange-clad partisans, Vasquez and Jones led Maryland to a 72-66 win Tuesday night, ending Illinois 51-game non-conference winning streak at Assembly Hall dating back to 1988. Vasquez scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half as the Terps recovered after losing a large lead. Vasquez s steal and layup with 1:22 left to play gave the Terps the 65-60 lead. With Jones scoring 19 and Vasquez playing like an experienced veteran, Maryland was able to overcome the absence of shot blocker and rebounder Ekene Ibekwe, who sat out with an ankle injury. The Terps 8-0 start is their best since the 1988-89 team won its first 10. Maryland (8-0) built a 14-point lead less than 8 minutes into the game and was up 20-6 when James Gist dunked with 12:55 left in the first half. Jones and Gist led Maryland in the first half. Jones had 13 points including 3-of-3 3-point shooting, and Gist added 9 points and 5 rebounds. Maryland increased the lead to 29-14 when Jones hit another 3-pointer with just more than 7 minutes to go in the half. The Illini (7-1), behind Warren Carter, went on a 12-3 run in the last 6:48 of the first half to make it 33-28 at the break. Illinois Trent Meacham made two free throws cut it to three with 1:59 to go before Vazquez made his key steal. Osby, who filled in nicely for Ibekwe, made a pair of free throws to give the Terps a 67-60 advantage with 43 seconds to play. Tyrese Rice scored 17 points 12 in the first half when the Eagles (6-2, 1-0) opened a 19-10 lead and never trailed. Maryland (9-2, 0-1) tied it twice in the first half but never got closer than three points in the second. James Gist had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Terrapins, who were off to their best start since going 10-0 to begin the 1998-99 season, a year they went to the NCAA regional semifinals. Bambale Osby had 10 points and nine rebounds for the Terps. D.J. Strawberry, Maryland s leading scorer at 15.2 points per game, picked up two fouls in the first 44 seconds and scored just two points in eight minutes in the first half. He finished with five points. BC led 58-50 before Osby scored on a putback, but missed the foul shot that would have given him a three-point play. Mike Jones made a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 58-55 with 6:25 to play. It was 63-59 when BC scored the next six points, starting with a blocked shot by Williams and a fast-break jam by Sean Marshall. After Dudley missed three free throws, Williams hit a turnaround from the left side and Dudley hit a short jumper in the lane to make it 69-59 with 1:22 left. Dudley moved into the top 10 on BC s all-time list with 1,654 points, passing Michael Adams. Adams was part of the Eagles team that went to the regional finals in 1982; that team was coached by Gary Williams, who is the head coach at Maryland with Adams as an assistant. (AP) - Mike Jones finished with 17 points to lead Maryland, while Ekene Ibekwe and James Gist each added 10, but Miami limited Maryland to 22 percent shooting and controlled the boards in a 63-58 victory Wednesday night. Miami (9-8, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) made only 19 of 61 shots (31 percent) from the floor, including 3-for-15 from 3-point range, and committed 15 turnovers. But the Hurricanes held Maryland to one field goal over the final 9 minutes, 36 seconds to end the Terrapins five-game winning streak. Anthony Harris scored 15 points and Jack McClinton had 12 for Miami, which outrebounded Maryland 55-41 and went 14-for-16 at the foul line over the final 1:19. D.J. Strawberry, the Terrapins leading scorer, went 1-for-8 from the field and finished with seven points - all in the final three minutes. The Terrapins finished 13-for-58 from the field (6-for-23 from beyond the arc) but kept it close by going 26-for-35 at the line. Maryland trailed only 30-25 early in the second half before giving the sellout crowd reason to cheer. Two free throws by Ekene Ibekwe and a 15-foot jumper by Will Bowers got the Terrapins within one, and a 3-pointer by James Gist tied it. Then, after a basket by Miami, freshman Eric Hayes hit a 3-pointer to Maryland its first lead since 19-17. Two foul shots by McClinton and layups by Brian Asbury and Harris put the Hurricanes up 40-35 with 9:55 left. The Hokies (14-5, 4-1), who let a 58-50 lead disappear in the final 6 minutes when they managed just one more point, went ahead to stay on two free throws by Gordon with 3:08 left, then padded their lead on a putback with 2:11 to play. The Hokies, who joined the Top 25 for the first time in more than a decade after an eight-day stretch that included victories at Duke and at home against North Carolina, led 58-50 after Collins scored inside with 6:24 left. However, a three-point play by Vasquez, a putback by Ekene Ibekwe, and then a drive and two free throws by Strawberry gave the Terrapins a 59-58 advantage with 1:45 left. Collins tied it when he made the second of two free throws with 59 seconds left, then blocked a shot by Vasquez with 42 seconds remaining. In the extra period, Jones scored right away for the Terps, but Dowdell scored on a drive, Gordon hit a pair of free throws, and Dowdell then made a steal and scored on a rebound of Gordon s miss, giving the Hokies a 65-61 advantage with 2:11 remaining. It was 59-44 before Maryland scored nine straight points. Reynolds stemmed the run with a layup, but Jones made two free throws and added a dunk off a steal to make it 61-57 with 5:42 left. Minutes later, D.J. Strawberry scored off an alley-oop pass from Eric Hayes to bring the Terrapins to 63-60. Joseph then missed a 3-pointer, but Soroye got the rebound and was fouled trying to shoot. His two free throws made it 65-60. A 3-pointer by Hayes made it a 2-point game with 54 seconds remaining, and Virginia s Mamadi Diane made one of two free throws with 23.2 seconds left to put Virginia up by three. COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - James Gist had 16 points and 10 rebounds, freshman Greivis Vasquez scored a season-high 18, and Maryland forced 17 turnovers in handing No. 16 Duke a 72-60 loss, its most lopsided defeat of the season. The Terrapins (18-7, 4-6 ACC) trailed early before taking control with a 29-4 run in the first half, then used a late surge to hold off a comeback bid by the Blue Devils (18-7, 5-6). Josh McRoberts scored 20 points and Greg Paulus had 12 for Duke. The Blue Devils previous three losses were by a combined nine points, but this turned out to be Duke s most lopsided ACC defeat since a 14-point loss to Wake Forest in February 2003. The Blue Devils cut a 20-point deficit to 58-52 before Ekene Ibekwe and Mike Jones had two baskets apiece in a 10-2 spree that made it 68-54 with 3:33 left. Down 40-28 at halftime, the Blue Devils closed to 50-43 on a three-point play by McRoberts. Vasquez followed with a tough layup, then added a follow-shot for an 11-point cushion. But the Blue Devils weren t done. A driving layup by Martynas Pocius and a dunk by McRoberts made it 56-50 with 9:51 to go, and Williams quickly called a timeout to stop the momentum shift. Maryland went 16-for-29 from the floor and forced 12 turnovers in the first half. Paulus opened the game with a 15-foot jumper and 3-pointer, but Duke missed seven of its next eight shots and committed seven turnovers while Maryland took control. After Ibekwe recharged the crowd by scoring five straight points, Vasquez made a three-point play and a 3-pointer to ignite a 14-0 run that made it 19-7. Paulus snapped the Blue Devils drought with a jumper, but the Terrapins responded with 10 straight points, including a 3-pointer and a three-point play by Gist, to go up by 20 with 8:54 left in the half. Brandon Costner scored 19 points for the Wolfpack (13-11, 3-8), who lost its third straight game since a surprising upset of UNC. Against the Wolfpack, the Terps led throughout the first half then gradually pulled away with a 25-11 run after NC State had fought back to tie it. The Terrapins led by as many as 16 points late to snap the Wolfpack s three-game winning streak in the series. Gist put the Terps ahead to stay at 46-44 with a layup off a feed from Eric Hayes with 16:40 left, then followed with an inside score from Ekene Ibekwe on the next possession.

Engin Atsur answered with a 3-pointer, but the Wolfpack came up empty on a key possession that turned momentum completely in Maryland s favor. With the Terrapins leading 51-47, Ben McCauley s dunk attempt off an offensive rebound rimmed out, and Gist knocked down a 3 at the other end to give the Terrapins a seven-point lead. The margin grew steadily the rest of the way, with Will Bowers closing the spurt with a stickback that made it 69-55 with 7:20 left. The Terrapins scored the game s first seven points and led by as many as eight points early on. The Wolfpack hung around, closing the gap to 39-37 at halftime on a 3-pointer from Dennis Horner just before the horn before tying it at 44 on a 3 from Gavin Grant with 17:02 left. But Strawberry scored eight of Maryland s next 15 points to regain control, 74-63. For Clemson (19-7, 5-7), the loss continued a slide that began when these two teams met for the first time this season on Jan. 13. Then the Tigers came as the nation s last Division I unbeaten at 17-0 before Maryland ended that distinction with its 92-87 victory. Clemson rallied from 55-43 down with a 15-4 run. But Strawberry had a nifty drive to make it 64-58. After James Gist scored on a putback, Strawberry made two foul shots. By the time Strawberry got free for an easy layup, Maryland was back in front 70-63. Freshman point guard Greivis Vasquez had 15 points and 11 assists for his first career double-double. Gist also had 15 points, 12 coming in the first half. Hammonds hit four of Clemson s six 3-pointers and led the Tigers with 16 points and a career-high 10 assists. COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - D.J. Strawberry scored a career-high 27 points, Mike Jones had 18, and Maryland rallied to beat the Tar Heels Sunday and extend its winning streak to five games. North Carolina (24-5, 10-4 ACC) had a chance to force overtime with 3.5 seconds left, but Brandan Wright missed the first of two free throws and the Tar Heels failed to control the rebound of his second misfire. As the final buzzer sounded, fans rushed the court to celebrate the Terrapins first win over North Carolina in six tries since Jan. 14, 2004. 2006-07 In Review 113

114 2006-07 In Review James Gist had 12 points for Maryland (22-7, 8-6). Maryland trailed 77-65 with 7:14 left before Jones scored nine points in a 16-3 run to give the Terrapins their first lead. After Terry scored for North Carolina, two free throws by Ibekwe put Maryland back in front. Terry then made two foul shots with 1:40 left, but Strawberry countered with a layup. Ibekwe followed with a steal and sank two free throws to give the Terrapins a three-point cushion with 1:11 to go. It was 89-84 before North Carolina s Wayne Ellington made a 3-pointer. The Tar Heels got the ball back after a Maryland turnover, setting up Wright s missed free throws. Hansbrough scored 22 points and Ellington had 17 for North Carolina, which went 8-for-17 at the foul line. A sellout crowd of 17,950 assembled on a snowy day to see if the Terrapins could extend their longest ACC winning streak since 2003 and end their skid against North Carolina. Cameron Indoor Stadium DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Maryland is suddenly looking like a team that nobody wants to play in March. Mike Jones scored 25 points and D.J. Strawberry had a pair of baskets during a decisive second-half spurt Wednesday night to lead the 24th-ranked Terrapins past No. 14 Duke, giving the Terrapins their sixth straight victory. Strawberry finished with 17 points for the Terps (23-7, 9-6 Atlantic Coast Conference), whose win streak - all in conference games - has firmed up its NCAA tournament resume. The contributions came from everywhere Wednesday. Ekene Ibekwe also scored 17 points, while freshman point guard Greivis Vasquez showed no sign of nerves in front of a hostile Cameron Indoor Stadium crowd en route to 13 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds in 37 minutes. Maryland led by 12 points midway through the second half. Then, after Duke made a run to tie it, the Terrapins took control in the final five minutes for their second season sweep of the Blue Devils (22-8, 8-7) in three years. The Terrapins shot 52 percent for the game, hit 7 of 13 3-pointers and blocked eight shots while committing just 13 turnovers. Jones went 9-for-15 from the field and 4-for-5 from 3-point range. The Blue Devils had won four straight since losing at Maryland 72-60, a defeat that dropped the Blue Devils out of The Associated Press Top 25 for the first time in 11 years. But they couldn t avenge that loss, shooting 41 percent and coming up empty on several key possessions down the stretch. COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - On Senior Day, Maryland s trio of Mike Jones, D.J. Strawberry and Ekene Ibekwe wanted to put an emphasis on finishing strong and heading into the postseason on a high note. With a win over North Carolina State on Saturday, the No. 24 Terrapins (24-7, 10-6) did just that - winning their seventh straight game to end the season and clinch at least fifth place in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament. Jones led the Terps with 21 points, while Strawberry added 16 points, six rebounds and four assists. Ibekwe had 14 points and 12 rebounds for his seventh double double of the season and the 13th of his career. Junior James Gist added 10 points and nine rebounds. Leading by six with less than 10 minutes to play, No. 24 Maryland outscored NC State 20-7 over the next 5-1/2 minutes. During that stretch, Maryland scored on 10 straight possessions, hitting nine baskets and adding two free throws. Maryland led 35-29 at the half and stretched the lead to 49-36, but NC State battled back until the decisive run that stretched the lead from six points to 20. Brandon Costner led NC State with 20 points and Gavin Grant added 15 points. The win completed a sweep of the four North Carolina teams in the conference for the first time since 1932-33, with a 6-0 mark. That year, they played only North Carolina and Duke. St. Pete Times Forum ACC-1st Round TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Jack McClinton scored 17 points, Brian Asbury added 12 and undermanned Miami upset No. 17 Maryland in the opening round of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament Thursday.

The 12th-seeded Hurricanes nearly squandered a 15- point lead in the second half, but McClinton and Asbury combined to make five consecutive free throws in the final 34 seconds to snap the Terrapins seven-game winning streak. Maryland (24-7), the tournament s fifth seed, trailed 44-29 early in the second half and chipped away at the deficit with a tenacious full-court press that forced Miami into several turnovers. The Hurricanes (12-19) worked the clock for much of the second half and seemed content to try to hold onto the lead. It nearly backfired when James Gist s one-handed slam made it a one-point game, 63-62. But Asbury made four straight free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. He was 8-of-9 from the line and added seven rebounds. Mike Jones led the Terrapins with 15 points. D.J. Strawberry added 13, and Gist finished with 12. Ekene Ibekwe had eight points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots before fouling out with 2:01 remaining. Not only did Maryland give up too many offensive rebounds, the team struggled from the field. The Terrapins shot 39 percent from the floor and 17 percent (3-of-18) from 3-point range. They also missed 11 free throws. HSBC Arena NCAA-1st Round BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - D.J. Strawberry finished with 12 points, five assists and eight rebounds along with a difficult defensive assignment on Davidson freshman Stephen Curry to lead Maryland into the second round of the NCAA tournament. Curry scored 30 points but ran out of gas at the end, missing five of his final six attempts before fouling out with 21 seconds remaining. The Wildcats had no one else to pick up the slack, managing just one field goal - Curry s transition layup - in the final 5:51. That was all Maryland needed in a game that featured 14 lead changes and the Terrapins - the Midwest Region s fourth seed - rallying from an eight-point second-half deficit. Mike Jones led Maryland (25-8) with 17 points, and reserve forward Bambale Osby added 11, playing a key role in sparking an 11-4 run that put the Terps ahead 69-63 with 7:27 remaining. The momentum turned in the opening minutes of the second half, and after Davidson opened a 52-44 lead when Curry set up Max Paulhus Gosselin for a transition layup. The Terps responded with an 8-0 run of their own and went ahead for good courtesy of Osby, who was a force in the middle filling in after starter Ekene Ibekwe ran into foul trouble. Osby s putback with 9:53 remaining gave Maryland a 60-59 lead, and he followed that by scoring on a baseline drive. Then, after blocking Jason Richards shot, Osby set up James Gist for an easy layup at the other end. Butler (29-6), the No. 5 seed in the Midwest Regional, advances to St. Louis next week and will play Florida. Mike Jones led Maryland with 21 points, while James Gist added 13 for the Terps. Butler never trailed after going up 39-36 on Drew Streicher s 3-point basket five minutes into the second half and hung on in a game Maryland rallied back to tie four times. Brandon Crone scored with three minutes left to put the Bulldogs ahead 58-56. Then, after Maryland s Ekene Ibekwe missed a jumper, Graves hit a 3-pointer from the left corner. After D.J. Strawberry hit one of two free throws to cut Butler s lead to 61-59, Maryland failed to climb back to even on its final two possessions. The game ended when Jones was unable to control Eric Hayes inbounds just before the buzzer sounded. The Bulldogs improved to 21-0 when they hold an opponent to 59 points or less. They did it with a stifling defense, forcing 17 Terrapins turnovers. Maryland struggled in the first half, going 6:29 without scoring a field goal before Gist hit a reverse layup with 1:13 remaining. The Terps missed three attempts, committed four turnovers and hit 1-of-4 free throws during its drought. Butler improved to 4-1 in NCAA tournament games under coach Todd Lickliter, and is in the midst of its fourth 20-win season in six years. The game was the last in the college careers for six Maryland seniors - Strawberry, Jones, Ekene Ibekwe, Parrish Brown, Will Bowers and Gini Chukura. The senior class of 2007 left the legacy, though, of returning the Terrapins to the NCAAs after a two-season hiatus.
